    2018 Q5 Transmission; Terrible!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just like the title says, my 2018 Q5 transmission is terrible - or the collective of the not quattro-transmission-traction is terrible. Every time I make a turn and get on the gas traction control kicks in and it cuts power, almost to the point where it becomes dangerous. Anyone else have this issue with the new Q5s? Is it "normal"?

    Thanks!

I had this issue with my winter beater, and yeah it's fcking dangerous.

Once, a bus was comming in my direction, and the traction control kicks in, and it cut the fuel around @20%. with a huge lag, I had to put the car to LOW, to gain traction. The bus avoid me by stoping in the snowbank.
    I was so pissed.

Of course, it was new to me, I didnt adapt myself to the new car, but at the end, it shouldnt be like that at all !
On my audi A4 , I can remove the traction control , and even if I leave it, it's not intrusive at all.

I guess you can reprogram with a vag-com or obdeleven, since my body reprogrammed his 2018 golf sportwagen 4 motion to be able to put traction -OFF, I guess something like that could be possible on a 2018 q5?

Help us understand what transmission your '18 Q5 has. Those of us with the '17 and earlier Q5 with the ZF 8 speed auto seem not to have your issue. At least I don't.

Maybe it is a software issue for Audi to address in the new B9 models?

It’s the dsg. I think the issue is related to it not being a true Quattro and traction control kicking in which cuts power. Makes it a terrible daily driver. I’m surprised more people haven’t complained about this.

2 big changes on the all new Q5. standard 7 speed s-tronic and standard quattro ultra.

Sorry to hear about the transmission software issue with the s-tronic and modified Quattro system. Sounds like Audi rushed this to market. Hopefully, if enough people complain Audi will come out with software reflashes that address the problem. I can see how it would be dangerous if you get a hard traction control initiated power cut when you need power the most.

Had the SAME exact experience in a rental....... so crazy!!!!

i'm shocked they are not having more complaints / buybacks from this. No doubt this will end in a class action lawsuit or they will have to fix it / buy back a lot of cars.

Very disappointed with Audi's build quality as of late. they need to step their game up, Merc and BMW have AWD performance models now!

We own a 18' Q5 and 18' SQ5 and haven't noticed any issues(and drive them pretty hard). I will tell you that I did turn off all the driving aids(in car settings) before we even drove either of them off the lot. The only issue we have with our cars(both) is the window 'auto up' feature often 'auto's down' the window instead of up. It's super annoying but we really love the cars so we just deal with it.

Does the '18 SQ5 retain the excellent ZF 8 speed?

Here's the thing though, Audi is doing this 'ultra' quattro system because for 95% of drivers, they'd never tell the difference - and it'll give them better MPGs, which they're comparing when they research their new car purchase on Consumer Reports.

I had a 2018 Q5 loaner last year and never really noticed any transmission kinks.. What really annoy the crap out of me is the ABS click!!! At certain speed I think 15-20mph it makes this clicking sound that can be felt on the brake pedal. All in all the Q5 drives very nice and pretty quick for a 2.0T..

hey i mean, only putting 5% of drivers in near death scenarios on a regular basis isn't a bad hit rate

lol jk, your SQ doesn't have the same trans though

Our 2018' has been awesome and we are still driving in winter conditions. Transmission feels crisp and sharp like a dual clutch should. Shifts nicer than my 13' with the ZF... which is indeed a fantastic transmission.

I have flogged both of them pretty good too.

And the 18' SQ I had as a loaner was even better.

Yep, I actually look it up online and it was the #1 complain all new 18' Q/SQ owners. I heard they might be a software update to re-solve that clicking(in the future).

Well, as long as I know what it is and that it's not an actual problem it doesn't bother me as much now - thankfully it's just when you initially hit that speed upon start up. But still, a software fix would be nice.

I forgot to check back on this thread...

When i had the tech drive he said he knew exactly what i was talking about, and he was able to recreate my complaint, but it was normal. If it is indeed normal i'll have to dump the Q and get something else, i can't drive a car that I feel is dangerous to DD.

These types of issues often crop up on the first year of a newly redesigned model. I would expect at least a partial fix through software to come out.

Still not sure how yours could vary so much from ours that it feels dangerous to drive, especially considering we are still in Winter up here in Canuckistan and we are currently dailying it on the stock all seasons without issues.

How hard of a turn are you attempting? Pre-sence is suppose to calculate your traction before you need it so sounds like something is out of whack. I pick my Q5 up next week and will try this fresh off the lot.

You should be able to go into the system and turn Pre-sence off.

Same question as above, how much gas are you giving it and where in the turn. When my sq5 was in for service I had an a5 sportback loaner which has the same motor/trans/quattro ultra. Even driving the loaner very spiritedly, I never experienced anything similar to what you are describing. Even when I was purposely pushing the car a bit. The combo of the fast spool on the 2L coupled with the somewhat abrupt action of the DSG, I could see some learning needing to take place. However, even my wife drove the car fine and she has a lead foot.

False, quattro ultra is only on the 6 speed manual A5 coupe. All other variants have standard quattro.
