Just to verify what gdawg'05a4 and others have already stated, there's already a X-pipe on our cars. I took pictures when I had my center muffler removed today. I was going to replace it with the MagnaFlow X-pipe but decided not to after reading we already have a X-pipe. I had straight pipes installed with MagnaFlow exhaust tips. It's just a little louder than stock, but it's enough for me. I will post before and after sound clips tomorrow.

2014 A6 3.0 X-Pipe or Straight pipe when removing Center muffler?

Update - I removed the two baby mufflers / resonators, the center suitcase muffler, and also replaced the rear mufflers with Magnaflow mufflers #11226. The car sounds like a beast but has a god awful amount of drone now..

My question is - To remove the drone do I put back the two baby mufflers / resonators or put back the stock rear mufflers? I don’t want to put both them back because then it will sound stock but I just want the drone gone.

Doing just the center muffler will yield very little gain in sound / tone. Don’t get me wrong, it will sound better than stock but it will still be somewhat “stock” like. I guess it depends on the kind of sound / tone you’re going for but mine sounded nothing like p3u’s for some reason.

I'm not looking for too much drama... as I want to retain my stock look... with a slight bump in exhaust note...

Time will tell once done... be curious how much of a difference deleting both center muffler and replace the rear mufflers...

I see no real benefit dropping $2k+ for a completely new exhaust with little no gains other than sound... with APR Stage 2 dual pulley setup... However if I go to UltraCharger... then general consensus is to also plan for high-flow cats...

Then removing the center muffler will be just fine for you

Update - Put the two baby resonators back on but it still has a good amount of drone. The car does sound more refined with the resonators back in place so that's good. I've come to the conclusion that the drone is being caused by the Magnaflows #11226.

Current setup - 2 baby resonators --> 2.5" piping to custom X pipe --> 2.5" piping to 2 Magnaflow Mufflers #11226 --> 4" Magnaflow Tips. Sounds beastly but has awful drone from 1800-2300RPM.

Going to experiment with a couple more mufflers before I go back to stop. Hopefully someone learns from my experimentation / mistakes lol Will keep posting updates here.

So Did you cut out the stock xpipe and center muffler then replace the gap with a custom xpipe? Or just cut out the center muffler and replace that with the custom xpipe? Also why x pipe and not straightpipe?

I cut out the center muffler and stock x-pipe completely and had a custom x-pipe fabricated and installed. I did the straight pipes before the custom x-pipe but switched to x-pipe to see if there was any noticeable difference in drone.

I would tend to agree with you - those rear mufflers may drone no matter what you do up front. Though the stock suitcase muffler should help considerably i would think.

Yup. Going to try a couple more muffler configurations before I throw in the towel and go back to the 2 stock rear suitcase mufflers.

I plan on doing something similar but instead of mufflers, I'm going to do a vibrant ultra quiet resonators in its place straight to tips. Heard that setup on YouTube and sounded great.

Which one sounded better the straight pipes or the x pipe?

In my opinion the x-pipe sounded a bit “cleaner” (very subjective obviously) but not that much of a difference.

If you already have a gmail then you can use that to sign in but if not you're going to have to make an account. After you've got it set up its very easy to upload to and share the link

Not yet...will attempt to this weekend. If I had the funds right now I would purchase a AWE catback exhaust system. Removing the center muffler and replacing with straight pipe sounds a little better but I think the best option is to save for a complete exhaust system.

Soooooooooooooo, still trying to tackle this drone issue. Had the muffler shop install two "drone sticks" (don't know what else to call them lol) parallel to the mufflers and still nothing. These pipes are supposed to cancel out drone but did nothing in my case.

I'm trying everything not to go back to stock mufflers. Any suggestions on mufflers that do not produce drone?

If it's not that bad, you can try to use sound deadening. It would also help with any road noise as a byproduct.

This is what I had on my a4 and I loved it, just a little drone on the highway. I would like to have a no drone Magnaflow solution for our cars. Hopefully one exists. I did run a different mag flow muffler though.

Thanks for uploading! I was still a little on the fence about doing it but after listening to this I'm definitely going to pull the trigger. Those are the 4.5 inch magnaflow tips right?

Yes...The exhaust tips are 4.5 inch Magnaflows. The sound is subjective...I like how it sounds on start up but Im still looking for a little deeper sound but not too loud. I ordered a OBX catback exhaust from eBay..I know eBay but I've read some good reviews for the fit and sound. I'll post a sound clip of the OBX exhaust when installed.

Thinking about this on the a4 I replaced the center muffler with a magnaflow and deleted the end mufflers, this worked great on the 2.0t motor. Has anyone done this with the 3.0t?

Moving the magnaflow up to the center muffler should calm the sound down I’d think.

Just found this video, looks like he has Jayfiniti's exhaust, but with a resonated x-pipe. He claims there is a tiny amount of drone that is hardly noticeable

I definitely agree that it could be better but for the price difference between doing a muffler cut out and a full catback its worth it imo. How much did your shop cost to do the initial muffler cutout?

If I remember correctly it was around $250.00.
