Angry Help in an impossible situation... Destroyed my 3.0t and engine torn apart.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
TLDR:B8 s4 with blown engine after unitronic+high miles. Looking for options.

Hello. I do not know who checks these forums, but I really hope someone can offer advice.

Lots of information, but I will try to present it logically.

The car is a phantom black b8 2010 s4, with every package I can think of.
I have RSM9 wheels, BBS wheels, and audi 19's for it.

Recently it was tuned with unitronic. I had the confidence to get it done after
replacing the mechatronics unit. I knew that an agressive tune wouldnt be good for a car with 120,000 miles, but the
unit malfuctioned and replacing it was needed.

The tune, unitronic stage 1+ TCU and stage 1 ECU, was great.

Between my lack of catalytic converters, air intake, and AWE Track edition exhaust, I believe the tune did really make the car
    much faster and more responsive.

However, about a month after the tune, I had problems. The engine had just been fully serviced, but already was suffering,
partly from one mechanic who worked on it forgetting to, and in two occasions breaking or leaving unplugged the connectors to the coil packs. Those connectors came of while driving, forcing the car into limp mode.

That issue aside, this is where the car dies

I was driving 45mph and the car suddenly bogs. Power ceases and the DSG shifts down until the tach goes seemingly negative, and I could hear no ping or noise, just a stop. The engine seized up, and would not turn at all.

I got it towed to my house, and tried to start it, no dice.
Tried a few other things, then thought to see if i could rotate the crank at all...
Nothing, completely and udderly stuck, as it it was welded together

Well, my only valuable asset was stuck and worthless, so I put all of my cash into getting it ripped apart quick.
With all the wiring harnesses, tubing, etc, out of the bay the engine was taken out along with the dsg. Nothing seemed wrong in the supercharger, the heads, valvetrain, etc. The gore was in the crank case and the oil pan was cringeworthy.
Metal shavings the size of dimes were in my oil pan. It was brutal... The first crankshaft bearing must have seized, spun in its place until it put the crank out of place, and then the crank's weighted side struck and ate into the side of the case. At least... that is what I figure. Regardless, the bottom end of the engine is useless.

And along with it, the vehicle is useless, and torn apart.

So here is why I am posting this:

    What should I do?
Is there any way out? Would anyone want a destroyed and expensive to fix pos.... or could I fix it.

I really want it fixed, and I especially wouldnt want to see this amazing machine meet such a terrible fate.

If there is any way I can silver lining this with a new engine or even some crazy swap.... I just need a way to repair this vehicle. In the meantime, I have a mode of transportation... but it isnt anything like the s4.

    Thank you for your time.

Ouch! Sorry to hear of the issues! Engine failure on these cars, especially in the way you described, is exceptionally rare!

Anyway, you'd get pennies on the dollar for the car if you were to try and sell in it's current state. The best bet is to purchase a used engine and install. Used 3.0Ts are plentiful for ~ $3-4k, and better deals can be found.

    Get a used engine.

Have to ask. Why the hell didn't the mechanic drain the oil with and check for shavings before pulling everything off?

thats some really bad luck, typically these motors will last a very long time.

get a good longblock in that car and enjoy the Unitronic tune :)

    Darn man!
As mentioned before - quite rare to hear of. As mentioned as well - just get a used motor and throw it in there.
    Good luck with the repair!

Lower end failure like that is very rare. When was the last oil change, who did it?

Just for your peace of mind, your failure likely had zero to do with tuning it unitronic. Something else caused this. Very sorry to hear what happened though. Good luck!

Contact Skokan Audi Recyclers in New York. They have tons of Audi parts. A friend got a like new A4 engine from them a couple of years ago and was very satisfied. Either call or just fill out the online parts query on their website.

+1 on Shokan, great to work with; I bought an oil cooler for my RS6 when the drivetrain was pulled for a torque converter replacement. That was a project, I suspect your S4 engine transplant would be less... involved and certainly less expensive.

    Good luck with it!

    That sucks dude.
I just went through the same thing with my engine.
Save yourself time and hassle and just buy a used engine.
Feel free to PM me with what 3.0T engines will work and what parts you need to swap from your old engine if you get a b8.5 engine or a7 etc..
Shop around for the engine and you might find a good deal.
I scored a great deal on low kms engine from a forum member today.

    So an update:

Messaged someone with a long block for 1400 but there is no proof of it being functional and mileage worries me.
As much as I wish I was, I am not an audi technician and have no clue how to put this engine in.
Cats are completely blown thru, but no CEL ever came on and it never caused the car to misbehave.
Only things that did go wrong were the mechatronics unit, while was replaced at 125 or so, never malfunctioned after.
and the coil pack connected were coming off towrd the end, due to one shop taking a less-than-careful tactic on disassembly.

If you’re paying a mechanic to install an engine I think you’d be better off buying a complete used motor instead of a mystery long block. The additional labor of using a long block will probably offset the difference in cost vs a complete motor.

But from putting a scope In the cylinder
I can see a crack on the piston from the edge near the cylinder wall to near the center of the top of piston.

    Also OP
If you end up buying a b8.5/a6/a7/sq5 engine for your b8
Send me a PM and I'll let you know all the parts that need to be swapped over from your b8 engine.
Might save you some labor costs at the shop knowing what parts need to change when both engines are out.
I've done 8 swaps on these cars and 7 of them have been b8.5 into b8.
    Cheerz

He's in Vermont. If that engine in the classifieds from CT mentioned early in the thread is still there that sounds like the ticket to me.
