Hi again. I'm back with a new project.

I picked this car up with 215k on it, peeling paint, slightly dented driver door, and needing mechanical work for a good price. My intent for this car is to fix the mechanical issues, put a decent set of wheels on it, semi straight pipes and try to sell it to someone looking for a good driver

    Work that it needs -

    1) Serious detail. Interior is in decent shape overall but is VERY dirty. I can only do so much about the paint, but I will likely vinyl wrap the roof in order to clean up the exterior as best I can.

    2) Misc interior work. Radio doesn't make sound, headlight switch is awfully faded, mirror switch is similar.

    3) Suspension work. Car has H&R sport springs and ONE koni shock installed in the passenger front. Driver front feels blown but have another koni shock to replace it with. There's also some clunking, but I think that may be power steering related. More on that later.

    4) Mechanical work. Car needs a timing belt service desperately, also need to figure out a cel being thrown on cylinder 1. PO installed all new coilpacks and it persists. Suspect wiring.

    Thanks.

The car has H&R lowering springs on it now, and ONE koni shock installed up front. Other one will happen this week.

    Wow, crazy price/deal.
I can’t get over how a bmw 540i wagon with an auto usually sells for $10-12.5k while there’s little love for our S6s.

    Hope mine lasts forever :D

Alrighty. First things first. I haven't found a good host for photos yet since photobucket is the devil so until then I'll have to upload with tapatalk then comment on the photos, so if you catch this before I explain photos, that is why.

This code. I need to sort out what is causing it. It triggers the cel almost as soon as I start moving the car, and I can't register the car until I get it sorted out. I've checked the harness at coil pack 1 and I have 12v and ground in the harness, but the ac voltage is really low on the coil wire. I'm speculating there's a break/partial break in the harness but need to google the code and see what other people are finding.

Next two pictures are part of the wire harnesses that went to the transmission as far I can tell. This looks burnt, but I THINK this is the 10 pin harness that I need to jumper wires in to make the reverse lights work, providing there's a harness plugged in to the reverse switch on the trans.

Popped the timing belt cover off just to check condition. Previous owner included a full timing belt kit and a camlock bar/crank pin because he had never done the timing belt and had owned it for about 100k miles. Last record I found of it being done was about 80k, and the car now has 215k

I found two disconnected lines near the power steering pump, I assume these are just transmission cooler lines that weren't removed during the 6 speed swap?

This is a small fix, but makes a huge difference to me. Replaced worn out headlight switch with a prefacelift switch. Mucccchhhh better.

Here is the steering rack noise. Watch it move when it clunks. To me it seems like the steering rack isn't bolted in all the way? Not sure, need to investigate. Desperately hoping I don't have to replace the rack.

Well that was easy. PO put all brand new coils in and 1 of them was bad. Swapped coil packs cylinder 1&2 and the fault followed. Still had all 8 coil packs from my old S6 on the shelf, swapped one in and BOOM no misfire. I like easy fixes.

Damn you guys and the awesome amulet red lol. Btw, you should both go to wagonfest later this year since you're both local. Its also the same day as Audi expo, but earlier in the day so you could make a day of it doing both events.

I'm planning on going to both, though I hope this S6 will be sold off by then. I bought another audi a few weeks ago that I will bring.

I think the harness you find the reverse lights in is the other one. I can tell you the wire to reverse lights is blue/ red , but I don't thin it's any of those. So you basically jump the blue-red wire and 12V acc over to the reverse switch.

There are 3 bolts which secure the rack ... at least one is under the battery tray. Another is also under the cowl panel, while the third is installed on the driver's side going up from under the car ... you will be glad you have the 6MT when you find it ...
They are 10mm 12-point bolt heads IIRC ...

My hunch was correct! Look at this

This is one of the 3 steering rack bolts, was backed out about 5 full turns

Also replaced the other shock up front with the kyb. No more blown shock. Next up, detail, wheels, timing belt service, then muffler delete.

Detail done. Interior and headlights anyways.

Also been working on the shift bezel. It’s the wrong wood grain and has cracks in it. I’ll paint this, the ash tray bezel, and the hazard switch black as I like the look better.

PO included two radios. Wasn’t quite sure why.

One that was installed in the car didn’t make audio at first at then went in to safe mode. Swapped the other one in and didn’t have the right code so had to call Audi.

Put the code in and we have sound! And there’s a dice iPod adapter that works with my phone, albeit not very well. I’ll take it though!

Wheels should be here tomorrow, along with new mirror glass since the factory mirrors are trashed. Oh. And a shift boot and shift knob that will not be trashed and will not come off when I shift quickly.

What kind of noise were you getting that led you to the steering rack bolts?

I like the black look on the trim pieces and those seats cleaned up nicely.

I saw the video. Is that what it sounded like while driving? I am getting a similar sound. I know the steering rack was replaced by the PO. I guess I can tear down the battery tray and see.

To address some problems with the manual conversion.

Wood grain shift bezel was the wrong wood and boot was destroyed. On C5's I typically do all the center console wood in black, so here we go again.

Another thing that irked me, brake pedal was too high. Should be level with the clutch pedal.

Also the clutch switch wasn't wired in. These cars do not drive well without the clutch switch connected properly: over revs between shifts, lurches, etc. Annoying to say the least. Looked in to it a bit and the wire was run to the ecu but not connected? Fixed it and suddenly the car drives like it's supposed to AND cruise control works. Yayyyy

My other car got here tonight, and in it were a set of wheels for the S6. Test fit one and boy does it look good.
