Hey everyone, I’ll make it sweet and simple, I need some input and insight on the b8 platform. We’re looking at a 12 a4 avant S-Line, 8 speed, no service records yet, 92k mi 16k$ at a bmw dealer. Link is provided. I come from 9 years or b5 s4 ownership and a few c5’s.
I had a Friend with an 09 a4 2.0 that ended up getting an engine replaced because of the common oil consumption issues, did this continue with model year 2012?
    Trans problems ?
Spill your guts with anything that might be helpful. My fiancée will be driving it with our 6mo old and a couple dogs most everyday. Besides oil changes, tires and brakes I need the car to go another 60k without a problem. If I can get the dealer to do a throttle service will this car go the distance requested? Realize a sensor or something will get funky within the next 60k. It will the Driveline be solid? . I’m planning to test drive the car Monday, possible make a deal on her trade in if the payment is right.
Currently all over google as jump back and fourth. Thanks everyone .

The carfax service records dont show anything major. (The carfax is in the listing) But the oil consumption problem and timing chain tensioner problem wasnt fully resolved for 2012 MY. By 2013 MY all the big issues were generally resolved.

The transmissions (along with quattro) are generally known to be reliable for all B8 model years.

A 2012 B8 with that many miles is not a good idea though. Especially for $16k.

I’d recommend reading thru the “looking to buy” thread and the “oil consumption” and “timing chain failure” threads to see what youre getting into. Also research: cam bridge screen, pcv, fuel injectors, carbon build-up.

It is highly unlikely that this car would go another 60k miles without any major issues. If you wanted this car you should have about 4 to 5 grand in the bank to cover potential problems.

I agree. I think $16 is way too much. Also I believe that is the sport package, not s-line. I have yet to see a dealer actually get that right but anyway...
I just got my 2010 sedan with 76k for $9.5k and I have seen avants with similar miles for the same or less. (I had to have a manual transmission so I paid a premium)
If $16 is more your budget, I would be looking for a 2013 with 50k or less, although I believe that's when it became the allroad. Not my department but I'm sure others will help out.
And as someone who has owned numerous high mileage VAG cars, only buy them if you know you will be putting in the work. This isn't a 90's Honda that will hit 250k with oil changes and new wiper blades.
Maybe a cpo car would be a better option for you. I don't have that much money so I don't look at them and can't provide much info.

First it's a sport package not S-line. It makes a difference price wise. I would call the audi dealer where it was maintained on the carfax and ask them for the history. Find out if an oil consumption test has been done on it. Not all of the B8's suffer from consumption, mine doesn't. If the timing tensioner and chains haven't been changed they need to be immediately. If you don't have the ability to change it yourself expect to pay between 1-2k to have them changed. Seriously it's a MUST. other than that it's just maintenance. Pcv valve can go bad but anyone should be able to do that themselves. Injectors can go bad but they go bad on other cars as well. If you want longevity you should probably have the transmission fluid/filter replaced (make sure they use zf or audi parts) that was quoted to me by the dealer $1200 but Eurotech would do it for $650. I did it myself.

$16K is to much for that car. If you can get it down quite a bit it might be worth it.

Also don't listen to someone that says I bought my sedan for $7k so don't pay more than that. Avants are worth more it's a fact.

What the hell? I said I got it for $9.5, not $7. You agree that $16 is way too high for a 90k car. If my car were an avant I would expect around $12k. I spent 4 weeks looking at basically every b8 on the east coast so I feel like I have a pretty good idea on pricing

Check out the Buyer's Guide I put together with the help of this forum. It answers most of your questions.

On that car you'd need to immediately address the timing chain tensioner, unless you can get the dealer to do it as part of the transaction. And the car is overpriced as others have mentioned.

Edit: Definitely nice equipment levels. At $14 with the tensioner done it seems reasonable if you like the color combination.

Wasn't necessarily taking about you. A couple days ago someone posted a very similar thread and some sedan owners said they only paid $7k or $9k etc for their sedans so don't pay more than that. Even though the guy was looking at an avant.

You said in your first post "I just got my 2010 sedan with 76k for $9.5k and I have seen avants with similar miles for the same or less."

Now you say an avant like your sedan would be $12k. See how that's confusing for someone shopping? First you tell him you can get them for $9k then you say $12k.
