    2009 Audi A4 won’t start

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
The car idled super rough quit, and now it will not start. No error codes. Just won’t start. Could this be spark plus and coils? It will not turn over, we hear the starter working though. Any advice is appreciated.

You hear the starter motor but motor doesn't turn? Solenoid on the starter isn't throwing the Bendix gear into the flywheel.

Likely not spark plugs or coils.

I’d check fuel pressure, and timing for starters. Sounds like the valves met the pistons unfortunately.

Sounds like the valves are banging against the valve cover so the motor must be turning.

OK. Ever had the timing chain and/or the chain tensioner done? The sound you're describing could be made if the timing chain had jumped and valves are hitting pistons.

What's the mileage? Sounds like it's the timing tension issue.

You seriously cannot tell if the motor is turning over but just not starting? Not to be rude but you sound like you have no idea what you're talking about.

As Novarider gracously pointed out, i am not an expert, novice at best. I have uploaded a video. Let me know what you think the issue may be. Would like advice before i open the cover to the timing chain. The car also has 120K miles on it.

2009 was the first year of that motor...and it came with the first design of the cam chain tensioner. It was awful. Awful. If you have 120,000 miles on that and it's on the first tensioner that came with it, I highly suspect you at least jumped timing. And you may not be able to tell that by just removing the top cover. It could look completely normal up there.

You need some help above your pay grade here. Tow it to someone who knows what they're doing. We're not getting much of anywhere here. But I'm guessing the worst.

The B8's A4 all have timing chains.

OP, I wouldn't go that far just yet. You should remove the bung hole cover just in front of the main tensioner and inspect how far it is extended. Just needs some agility with a sharp screwdriver and a small mirror w/light. There's plenty of how to's for this on the web. Don't rule out other things at this point either, if you need to ask questions there's plenty of forum members that'll help.

By starting it, you literally just kissed(piston kiss that is) any chances of that motor being saved. So no sympathy from me.

Your best bet is a motor swap because you most likely have destroyed those valves with all your starting attempts.

Like said above, it’s above your head so get it towed

End of the Story: Well, this car was toast. Ended up selling it to a mechanic who will rebuild the engine and sell it after he fixes it. The issue was the timing chain tensioner failed. Apparently, this is a chronic issue with 2009 A4 2.0T B8 models. Audi has revised this part multiple times to correct the chronic failure issue. I would recommend if you have a 2009 B8 A4 2.0T and your Audi shop can't tell you what revision of the timing chain tensioner you currently have, that you spend the money to replace it before your engine is distroyed.

Keep your records! It looks like a class action is coming down soon. You might be able to get some money back. (I think you meant to say B8). See recent thread on this B8 forum.
