Post B8 A4 Auto Transmission Recoding

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So one of the things that i hate about the b8 is the auto transmission shifting bumps.

From stop position - 1st gear all the way to 3rd sometimes, there is a small bump or hesitation that occurs. It feels sloppy to me, as if the transmission shifting is out of timing. This happens when its on D.
The bump happens less when its on S, and obviously not so much when its on tiptronic mode because you're controlling the shifting.

I've done some research and it looks like more people had this same problem. They claimed that there used to be a post somewhere on "how to recode the shift timing for the b8 with VagCom".

Does anyone here know how to do this? If so, can you share the thread, or list the steps on how to basically re-tune/re-code the timing in gear shifting.

    Thanks in advance.

As far as I have seen, and I have been on here for many years, there is no way to recode the ZF8speed Transmission. But I could be wrong.

GIAC was doing stuff with the ZF6 I think.

Same for me. I very much doubt there would be this type of access available in VCDS, given the complexity of the trans and controlling software. I have only ever heard about TCU updates/reflash at the dealer. You can erase and reset the trans adaptations in VCDS, but I don't know if this would have any impact on you. It takes some time for the new adaptation to take hold as you go through a host of differing driving parameters.

Yeah you can't get in that deep with VCDS. But as others have suggested it's worth checking with the dealer to make sure your programming is up to date; they revised both the ZF6 and ZF8 programming like a half dozen times each. IIRC it's a free update.

Bear in mind you'll lose your tune if you have one installed; they usually update everything when they go in there.

I've checked. Believe me. I hate the way my 8HP55AF shifts so early. Yes, I know about Drive Select and I have mine in dynamic, which means it is always in Sport mode. Damn thing still shifts early, sometimes I get some clutch pack slip because my Stage 1 it putting out too much torque for the gear I am in.

Been all over VCDS in the tranny module 02. Can't find a thing or I would have tried it.

I cannot find that post, but maybe they were talking about resetting the transmission programming, so it starts to learn the way you drive and adapts to your needs.

But i honestly hate how it shifts late, and a TCU Chip/reflash would be greatly appreciated either by GIAC or anyone. lol

TPMS could be re-set on the B7 and it would also do something to the transmission shifting as I recall. I did something like it with my 2004 Passat TDI and the ZF6 I had in her.

With the Passat, it was a sport mode you could enter once, and then after shutting the car down, you would have to re-do the procedure. With the ZF8 you have the sport mode already.

Hi, I own a 2013 A4 Quattro. I too had the shift bump you described. I found a TSB #10094622 that provides updated software for the transmission control module for harsh downshifts. I took the car to Audi and after paying a $80 deductible the transmission software was updated under extended warranty ( I have a Audi Certified Car). Now the cars shifts smooth as silk in Drive and Sport modes. :) Hope this helps!

This sounds promising. I might stop by my local Audi stealership and ask. but i dont think it will be $80 lol.

I'd like to know what they say. I'd pay them whatever they want if they could make this damn tranny shift more aggressively.

Well I was covered by warranty without it they wanted $360 if i recall. Trust me I was willing to pay it. Ive driven it a month and noticed a small bump in D only once and that was subtle enough I'm not sure about it. So yeah the software reprogramming worked great for me. Took about 3 hours. Good luck!!
