    my baby's first accident...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
The snow finally did him in... was going around a slight bend on the highway and hit a big slush patch. after that, it was over. he made good friends with the median. I'm sure the collision repair are very good at their job and will make him look good as new, but i'm more concerned about internally, would anyone recommend taking him to a specialized vw/audi shop to give it a look over? if the vw/audi shop found something they missed, would that be grounds for the collision center to fix?

Well I call him stitch4 (play on s4) since he's blue and he's my favorite character. I'm not sure what tires are on there.

This could be your problem. If it's a prestige with 19" wheel package, then standard tires are SUMMER ONLY.

I appreciate the info, but does anyone have insight on if a specialized shop finds something was missed, is the collision shop and thus my insurance responsible to fix it?

Bridgewater Collision repair in Bridgewater NJ. Very reputable shop that specializes in Audi. In fact the local Audi dealer sends all their vehicles there. Just had my S4 in for front end repair and they did an awesome job good as new.

Tread pattern looks like DWS06. Not a Continental winter tire either way.

Agreed, and I should have expanded on my comment: "....hoping to see DWS06, not ExtremeContact DW"
That being said, I've used my half-worn DWS (the older version, not DWS06) this winter in some light snow/slush conditions and made it through OK with the knowledge that it's not care-free like a winter tire. But the weight of this car overcomes the lateral traction of these tires in any kind of snowy conditions if the speed is high enough.

Not to further hi-jack the thread (but I am, I know)... What justification do they have to include "S" in the "DWS" if it doesn't meet the minimum test to earn the mountain/snowflake winter service emblem that real snow tires have? Just to sell more "UHP All-seasons" I guess? I had the original DWS on my S4 when I got it... tried them in the first snow of the first year I had it and immediately changed out for a winter tire. Granted, it wasn't the DWS06 model, but know they still wouldn't hold up to a true winter tire.

I don’t like seeing this... glad you’re ok... but these are the tires that I bought for “winters” in VA. I’ve always run true winters in PA but didn’t think I’d need them here.

How fast were you going? Looks like a good amount of standing snow and slush. Same we see here sometimes. Ugh. Looks as if I’ll be slowing down even more.

I was completely satisfied with my S4's winter performance with Conti DWS tires. Problem is that you will generally only get one season before they wear down and become DW tires. We had quite a few winter snowfalls here in SE Pa this winter. 3" on Monday (I'm about 40 miles west or Bridgewater NJ.) Have had 1 bad snow in the last 5 yrs and very few ever. When we do have significant accumulations, you probably don't want to go out in it anyway. Not debating that A/S tires are as goods as dedicated winter tires. Just saying they do fit the needs of many in my area for winter driving. They are a viable option as long as the tread is above 80%

Sorry to hear, glad it was only minor and you are ok.

Most Audi shops don’t have their own collision departments. They just send them off to who they contract with. I’d find some reputable shop and have them do the work, they always guarantee the job. So if something acts up later you have a place to fall back to. I’d just be concerned if pinched wires, and how they repair them. I’d have Audi do any re-calibrations they see fit, insurance does foot the bill for those also.

Yes, they call it "supplemental damage payment", happens a lot after they disassemble the car and find damage that was not otherwise apparent. The repair shop should then stop what they are doing and contact the insurance adjuster for either another inspection or authorization of repairs.

He's using Conti DWS06. You can see the tread pattern in the snow if you click the image. That tread pattern is unmistakable from others.

    Sorry for the loss OP.

This was about $6800 in damage on my 2012. Both the fender and hood were repaired not replaced. The shop couldn’t get me in for 2 weeks so while I had the car I took a bunch of pics, both with the headlight out and from underneath. I read a bunch of shop reviews and then took it to 4 different places before picking one. I asked a ton of questions, had them do some extra work on the opposite fender and they also installed the RS grille I had rather than ordering a replacement stock grille. The manager seemed to have no issues working with me on any of it, unlike some of the other shops I talked to. They exceeded expectations and I was very happy with the results.

Only time I had to deal with this, I called the Audi, BMW, and Mercedes dealers and asked for recommendations for body shops and then triangulated. I then visited two of them to see examples of their work.

I was worried about this as well. It’s up to the shop and not your insurance company if they’ve completed the work and therefore closed out the claim. It would be the shop warranty for the work performed. I asked my insurance company the question.

Lot of damaged b8.5 threads today. Sad. I'm definitely no expert but I don't think there is much behind the front end on the side of impact. If the damage didn't reach your axle or crash bar I'd assume you'd be fine internally speaking. Just my .02

That looks cosmetic only. I'm going through the same thing right now. I've learned my lesson. Don't jump the gun on putting on your performance tires. These cars are very capable when they have the correct stuff under them for mechanical grip.

And won't go for $hit with summer tires in even in 1/4 " of snow. Actually, they will go.Turning and stopping is the real problem.

Sorry for the loss my Friend. Hopefully others can learn that a dedicated set of snow tires versus all-season tires may be a good investment. No guarantees but it surely increases your odds in the snow.

Suggestion....I had my front bumper replaced & resprayed on another car. Do yourself a favor and get a clear film applied as after market paint will not hold up like factory. Be prepared to see road rash on that bumper if you don’t

Doesn't look too bad. Should be back to snuff without major issue. Cost will be 6-10k though.
As for tires... you could have the best snow tires in the world and hit a patch of "something" at the right angle and speed and will collide with the right obstacle... It can happen... speed and momentum is everything.
    Chin up...
