    Cooling fan replacement DIY?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My AC compressor took a shit bc my aux cooling fan took a shit and I didn't know it. I need to replace my fans. On my GTI, it was pretty straight forward...4 bolts and the fan assembly could be dropped from the bottom. For my b7 it looks like I need to put the car in service position, remove the core support, and loosen and/or remove the radiator. I looked for DIY and couldn't find one. Anyone have any advice, words of caution, etc.?

put it in service lock and suspend with bungee cords so you can hang it off the snub. This will give you enough room to move all wiring and wiggle it out the top. Not too bad of a job. No need to pull rad

Is it the fan or the controller? Did you put power directly to the motor?
The fan module can be done without putting the car into the service position but not the fans.

It's the 300mm fan, near as I can tell. I tested the resistance and it was high. When you turn the blades by hand, it makes a grinding noise as well. I'm assuming the module is ok. I bought the TYC assembly for $100 off of ebay. Looks like a lot of vendors stock that piece, including europaparts. I would replace the module to be safe while I had it apart, but it's pretty pricey.

TYC is solid for the price.
Module cost does suck but definitely recommended. Much easier to replace while you have it all apart. Unless you can confirm it's good by commanding it with VagCom and using a test light.
