Depends. A good flash tune is going to be a bit better. But a JB4 will not void your warranty if that's important.

    A proper map 6 JB4 will hold its own though - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlbLW05n9uc

Agreed with Madmen...technically speaking, an ECU flash is better than a piggyback simply due to the total parameters which are accessed by a flash. However, with any stage 2 setup, a DP is required. Whether you're running Unitronic, APR, JB4, etc, you're splitting hairs at that level. It's not like one tune or piggyback unit is making substantially more power or putting bus lengths against another at that point. You'll just have to decide what's best for your needs.

I was just going to chime in regarding location, specifically CA, when I saw OP is from Fillmore.

The 335’s were big into JB4s and ran pretty well but not on 91, mine included. If you had access to 93 or a couple gallons of e85 it was much smoother.

Hey yes I'm from Fillmore but not norcal, socal. I do have access to e85 but i think there's only one station near by but to run e85 wouldn't i need new fuel pump and injectors?

JB4/Audi will run fine on map 1 with 91. You could log a map 2 and send it to George @ BMS. He can help make a happy medium custom map (6).

Are these JB1/4s really not t detectable by Audi? And are they really safe? I just came from the EB mustang world and there were a couple piggyback devices and they were all considered bad news. I guess because the ecu could not react to them since they didn’t communicate with each other. How is it different with the S3?

You have to remove it for dealer visits (25 minutes). But since it doesn't flash the ECU, it doesn't trip the flash counter that VW looks for. The JB4 is a very advanced piggy back. It uses parameters from the O2 sensor and OBDII port to keep fuel in check. It's probably safer than a flash tune, since it uses all the OEM failsafes - as long as you don't try to force too much boost in the custom settings.

The 335 JB4's are even better, as they have an auto learning map that adjusts itself based on octane levels and other parameters. So you don't have to worry about running 91 one week, and E30 the next. Hopefully they add that to the VW stuff some day.

Yeah after the conversation i had with two Audi dealerships and a little prick that works in one of them. I’ll be going JB tune this time around. Funny that i come from VW and the dealership was sooo cool and mod friendly, makes me wonder if i should just get an R instead lol.

The problem with a tune though is even if the VW dealer is mod friendly, VW corporate has to approve the repairs (on significant repairs anyway). They will connect to the ECU to check for a tune, which the dealer will have no control over.
