Best Way to Crank - NOT Start?

    Hey Guys,

My S7 has been in storage a few months now and l was wondering what’s the best way to crank the engine without starting it?

It will be coming out of storage at the end of April, and I’d like to “prime” the oil-ways so the system is fully lubed before firing up the engine.

With this stupid electronic starting systems, it's a good question. But for just a few months, just start it normally man. Even if it was a year, no need for that charade, especially with fully synthetic oil in there.

On the driver side fuse panel pull the second fuse from the top in the left most column (C2, fuel pump). It will crank, but won't start (possibly sputter with what fuel is in the injector).

I would always do this when changing oil on my B6 S4 as they were notorious for timing rattle issues.

I respectfully disagree. Oil will eventually seep through the check valves and drain the oil galleys along with timing components that rely on oil pressure to maintain chain tension.

Synthetic oil can maintain a boundary layer for only so long. Dry starts on an engine is incredibly bad.

I was going to do this to my rs6 last week. I pulled the fuel fuse and it still fired right up. Then i put the fuse back in and ran it idle for a minute or two. Mine only sat for just over 2 months. So i dont know if this was bad or not?

Personally i'd pull the coil packs out and remove the spark plugs and squirt some lubricating oil into the cylinders. Done this before when i have rebuilt an S5 V8 engine. I know removal of the coil packs is not easy but just depends on how far you want to go.

I’m willing to bet most of our cars sat for at least a few months prior to being purchased, and I don’t think anyone pulled fuses or removed parts to prime the system.

I’d start it up as-is. Cranking without starting is what most people do to see if their oil pump is working. Probably no worries about that here.

That's okay man, but I thought I was anal. Ha ha. For anything less than a year, it's an absolute overkill, but to each his own. As mentioned above, when have you heard to even thinking about that when a car sits for months on the lot. Maybe in the old days, but nowadays the chain tensioners also have a spring; otherwise they'd get out of timing even after a day without use. Oil drains in a few hours, but the layer stays for a long, long time, even from a group III oil, like our cars use (not 100% synthetic).

Just pull the engine. Pull plugs and coils. Crank and put it back in.
If you really want to overkill lol
