    Coolant / High temp issues

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So just the other day my 12' A6 decided that the temp gauge wanted to show almost maxed out HOT. I thought that maybe it was some air in the system because 3 months ago I did replace the Valve for Transmission Fluid Cooler b/c of a CEL P2753. After that install all worked fined - no more CEL and high temp on the gauge never happened. Scanned the car and got a MIL Request Signal Active (Check TCM for errors too!) P1624 code as well.

So I drained all the coolant that I could from the drain screw under the car...I was able to replenish the G12 mixed with distilled H2O with just over a gallon of fresh fluid and bled the system to get all the air out. So this AM I went on a 15 mile ride - mixed highway and in town and not a single issue. Temp gauge was perfect. Parked for about an hour and headed back on the same return trip and about 2/3 way through it started to climb up to almost maxed out high - then fans kicked in and the temp started to slowly come down. If I cranked on the heat it would also come down a bit...but the fans would run high and loud. I'm thinking about changing out the coolant temp sensor and the engine temp sensor. Hoping its not the water pump or thermostat.

Any other ideas outside of what I have done or think it might be?

Did you ever get this figured out? Having similar issue with my A6. Temp guage rising after driving for about 20-25 minutes, running the heater will bring the temp down as well. Coolant was low and dealer replaced fluid after doing an oil change. Still was overheating, so took it back, this time they found Fan 1 fuse had blown $425 later, still getting temp issues.

Bummer. What was your total for that? Still more than $2k? I really don't want to have to do that. May try this on my own, not a lot of places I trust to work on any car let alone my new (to me anyway) A6.

Not sure about the supercharged models, but the with the V8s, if the coolant gets too low either through draining or a leak the heater core has to be bled as well when refilling because air gets trapped due to the low fluid level.

The thermostat is a known issue on these early C7 3.0T engines. Mine failed and left me stranded in Shoshone CA for 13 hours while I waited for a flat bed tow truck. If yours has not been replaced than I would suggest having it replaced before it fails completely. The replacement is a newer version with an aluminum housing instead of a plastic housing.

I have a 2012 A6 3.0T and recently had a coolant leak but my temp gauge never went up, took it into my independent shop to see what the cause was. They reported back that my thermostat was getting stuck, one of the pipes for the coolant system was brittle and leaking as well. Had it all replaced for about $2300.

They also noted that my passenger side fan was no longer working.

So I took the car into Keyes Audi today for the POD recall (if you're an LA resident) and they did a health check as usual and now say that my fans are completely bad (temp gauge still has not went up) and that my water pump needs replaced.

No idea what's going on and what really needs fixed but I think if we all complain to AOA we can get a recall on this coolant system as a whole.

I'm so tired of putting money into this out of warranty car.

May show my health report so you all can see how much needs replaced on this car now

Sorry to revive a slightly old thread, but I found this thread to contain some very valuable tidbits...

For replacing both the water pump and thermostat, do you guys recall how many hours of labor that took? I'm just trying to do a sanity check on an indy estimate I got for 3.5 hours of labor for just the water pump replacement, or 6 hours of labor for both water pump and thermostat. Does that sound about right?

I had my water pump and thermostat replaced on my SQ5 (same 3.0T motor).
$237 parts, $640 labor for the water pump (so maybe 4 hours @$160/hr)
I was quoted $1150 to replace the thermostat as they have to remove the supercharger. It is only an $80 part so it is a massive labor cost. If I was going to have them undertake it I might ask them to replace anything else under there that looks like it might need replacing. PCV/oil separator and PCV shutoff valve come to mind.
In my opinion 6 hours for both sounds like a relative bargain I'd think 4 for the pump and about 6 for the thermostat (10 total).

Thanks for your insights. Good point about doing the oil separator etc as well, my guess is that wouldn't be too much more work.

Total quote was around $700 for water pump replacement, or $1300 for both water pump and thermostat. (Labor costs are lower here in FL.)

Anybody else have any thoughts on the number of hours for these jobs?

Got a quote for replacing the PCV/oil separator and PCV connector at the same time as the above job. $180 parts and 0.5 hr labor, so it's a no-brainer to get it done at the same time.
