    Question Steering rack lash adjustment?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've had a clunk in the front end getting worse for about 6 months now when I turn quickly or go over a bump at an angle (2012 A6 3.0T 49k on the odometer). Just got under the car and had someone shimmy the wheel while I checked everything. All of the bushings look good, ball joints, tie rod ends inner and outer. Steering shaft is solid. Where I am getting play and a clunk noise is inside the rack itself. If you lock the steering wheel and turn the tires by hand and a dial indicator on the end of the rack I've got nearly 0.060" of play. I looked everywhere for a way to adjust the lash and cannot find anything. Considering there is only 49k on my car I am shocked there is already this much backlash in the rack. Is there any way to adjust this or am I SOL and need a new rack? Every American or Japanese car I've owned had an adjustment, so I'm hoping Audi has this too.

    Thanks.

I decided to drop the rack and take a look at it. Found the adjustment nuton the top side turned it 45 degrees and it was already too tight and I couldn't even rotate the input shaft. Went back to about 20 degrees and it was still too tight so I put it back to where it originally was. That means that the play in the rack is not coming from the gear lash, so what is it? I used a mechanic's stethoscope and the clunking noise is the loudest near the input shaft to the steering rack. There is also a lot of play in the input shaft laterally which I find odd, typically their held very firmly in place. I did not want to remove the black plastic cover because I was concerned about the torque and positioning sensors needing calibration, does anybody know if the interface between the shaft and the torque sensor could be causing my issues?
