You need an engine carbon cleaning. Combine that w/ new coil packs and plugs.

This might be a dumb question, but how do you know if you need carbon cleaning? I have 136K miles (mainly freeway/highway miles) and have no signs of any hesitation, loss of performance, etc.

I just thought since I have high mileage, I should get it done.

I have this same question except I don't feel this is a dumb question. :) There is no hard evidence that a dirty intake with heavy strong carbon buildup shows any evidence except maybe contribute to possible poor fuel economy.

Thanks man. I'm glad I'm not alone on this one.

Did you do new plugs with your coil packs? Also try replacing your PCV valve. Our motors are know to have bad pcv valves. I had an issue where my pcv valve has a slight vacuum leak which caused rough idle. Replaced it along with the hose going into the intake manifold and solved my issue. I also had a CEL and VCDS showed a fault.

I too would like to know some of the common symptoms of carbon issues.. I've read about the problem but not the symptoms. Based on only general knowledge of the problem.. I just put my foot in the carb and give it the ol' hillbilly tune up everyday I get on the interstate. lol.

In my observations from the past few weeks (since I've had my carbon cleaning), I have noticed much better fuel economy (back to when it was new) and the car pulls much better. This is especially noticeable at higher speeds when overtaking vehicles. May not be enough reason for everyone to do a cleaning-- but I really am enjoying the way the car is pulling now.

so to Blitzzer's question, I would say the common symptoms are lower fuel economy and weaker throttle response. Since this is a gradual buildup of carbon, the loss is also gradual, and goes unnoticed.

Thanks for the info. I just rolled 38k on mine yesterday.. at what point or how often is a cleaning typically recommended?

A couple of shops that I spoke to recommended anywhere between 70k to 100k miles as a good time to do a cleaning. I didn't do mine until 136k miles, so the noticeable difference was huge . You should be good to go for a while!

I know this because I just bought a 2010 that idled rough, even with new coil packs and spark plugs.

    This was @ 88K:

    Before...

    After...

Car drove totally different afterwards. Smooth idle, more power and quieter engine...

Man that looks good, what products did you use to clean the valves?

Yes! I couldn't understand why it would jerk in 1st and 2nd when you gave it a generous amount of gas. Drives like a new car now.
