    Front wheel bearings

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Last fall I bought my 2014 A4 CPO car-33,000 mi. Almost immediately the left front wheel bearing had to be replaced. This week the right front wheel bearing started screeching. So this week the RF wheel bearing is scheduled to be replaced @ dealer. Close call,as my 4 year Audi warranty ends this month..

Has wheel bearing failure been a chronic A4 problem? Going back over 60 yrs I can not remember having to replace front wheel bearings in any of my cars.

It's a chronic A4 specific problem over the last 20 years....It's safe to say the Audi engineers have no idea what they are doing.

Replaced both my fronts at 65k but I am lowered and also run spacers so they lasted as long as I expected.

I drove 2 B5's for a total of about 500,000 miles. Replaced many rear wheel bearings on them, just one front bearing. But on the B8 I seem to see guys around here having more problems than on the B5's up front. Haven't see the chronic rear bearing problems on this B8 forum that the B5's had.

I just checked ECS. OEM kits (both sides) cost over 3 times as much as aftermarket kits. With the known failure of OEM wheel bearings, I wonder if itís better to go aftermarket. And if so, which brand?

    Perry,

RM Euro says that "NSK" brand is the OE manufacturer (part #4H0498625F) . They have it listed at $88.23:

RM also has F A G w/ bolts for similar price:

    Front wheel bearings

I recommend to purchase from FCPEuro.com and enjoy a free lifetime warranty on the part during your ownership of the car. Here's an FA G bearing for $85 with free shipping.

    https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/aud...4-s5-4h0498625

Doesn't make sense these days to shop anywhere other than FCPEuro. I don't work for them. Just saying that lifetime parts replacement guarantee is unbeatable. I don't know why anyone would shop elsewhere. Little known secret l, but FCPEuro will also price match most other competitors. So you get the lowest price, and lifetime warranty

I can tell you my experience with both of those brands has been excellent. They cost more and the reason is the materials, and the tolerances. The companies have factories all over the place, but again great products.

I use SKF heim joints on my Ducati quick-shifter and rear sets. Timken for any automotive applications I can find. There are a few reviews out there comparing the two companies, and I would guess Moog would be another top contender.

Do they carry SKF or Timken bearings? The labor of installing the bearings is not going to be free. So I would go with the top quality parts.

I pretty much think lifetime parts guarantees are worthless. And parts makers know it. You'd have to keep every receipt for every part you've bought, and then they'd only give you a new part. The true cost of a bad part is the labor (whether its your time or someone you pay) to swap it out.

Has anyone had experience with getting the dealership to replace a bearing under warranty if you've modified the suspension? i.e. lowering springs

I had H&R OE sport springs installed 6 months ago and put on 15mm wheel spacers at the same time. I can take the spacers off but I'm not going to put the stock springs back on the car just to have the dealership check to see if it's a bad wheel bearing.

I had an alignment done after the springs and spacers were installed but they weren't able to get the suspension totally within spec.

Literally replaced the right front bearing last week, 797 bucks later at Audi. I think the left one is going to be gone soon too...

I won't put anything timken on my car anymore after the last fiasco with two bad bearings right out of the box. The play was so bad on the bearing it never even made it back onto the car before we realized something was wrong. Their quality control has been on the decline for years, they have been riding on that reputation.
