Show me where it's somehow against the law to disable a dash camera when you bring your car in for service. As far as I know, there are no such limitations when you bring your car in for service and agree to let them actually work on your car.

You had to and they advised you... Good on them and you.

I was not given that common courtesy.

I'd gladly turn off the camera or stop going to that workshop but they must advise me and shouldn't be making that decision for me unilaterally since it wasn't on the work order and contract so I didn't previously agree to anything of the sort... Once again IMHO
So how would you have felt if they simply placed a piece of paper over the lens of the dash cam, blocking it from recording video? And maybe turn up a radio in the shop so you couldn't hear any audio either? Would that have made you feel violated?

This article points out the legal ramifications of leaving a dashcam recording in your car when you bring it in for service:

I honestly think I would have been ok with both scenarios... not thrilled but ok... as long as they didn't disconnect it without my consent... I feel if there is snow on the windshield then the camera is blocked anyways and if there is ambient noise it is beyond my control.

So no, I don't think I would have felt violated as these thinks can happen at any time.

Just a quick update... the SA at the dealer I dealt with got back to me. Very pleasant fellow. He advised there is no policy and doesn't know why the tech disconnected the camera and will find out... not a complaint on my part just curious as to why the tech felt the need to disconnect without my consent. The SA went on further to compare the car camera to the radio in that they are not to touch unless they are diagnosing or trouble shooting it in which case, as with the radio, the client is advised that we may lose out radio presets, etc... Very much what I was expecting and I'm happy with the dialogue thus far.

Communication and courtesy go a very long way.

This is a case of the tech covering his ass and can be easily defended by him not wanting to be filmed. Both of which I agree with. He does have a right to be or not to be filmed.

Would you be equally as grumpy if he had put black tape over the lens too?
I accept a Stage II tuned S5 is quicker than an RS5
    Doug convinced me
He's also the reason I don't come here much

I guess it doesn't matter now that the dealer has vindicated my position and views.

I have now been contacted by both the SA and service manager, both assuring me this is not their standard practice, nor policy to disconnect car cameras. They tell me many of their vehicles come in with car cameras and the techs nor any employees are to disconnect them unless working on a related electrical problem at which point they are to notify the customer first. I have been offered a free detail of my vehicle where they will pick up my car and drop off a loaner. This dealership is all class and I am extremely happy with the response. I went on to further add I did not want the employee disciplined nor have a complaint lodged against him on my account as it could be as innocent as a training issue... unless of course through their own investigation internally they find repeated behavior like these and deem it necessary to do something about it... at which point they advise they will let me know.

Thanks everyone for your constructive feedback and if you are in a GTA Audi dealership, they should not be disconnecting your car camera! lol

    Have a great day everyone.
