Best Gas / Preferred Fuel......Discussion and thoughts

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Well, to get to the point .....someone on here called me( and others, a generalization ) stupid for not knowing about fuel mix and the like so, after coming up short in the search I thought to try and learn more than what I knew yesterday about gas/fuel. Feel free to google that shit also . In doing so we would open a discussion about gas, fuel mix , experiences with brands, etc;. Feel free to chime in with any and all info.

To start, I am located on the west coast of Canada and am the new owner of a used 2007 A4 , 6Sp MT Quattro. Stock as far as I know except for the AFE R5 Pro Air filter and R8 coil packs I recently put in.

Now, the manual says that 91 octane is what my car needs. So I started at Shell. Mostly because of the interweb info I gathered and opinions from various forums. It was the least expensive, and apparently, the only 91 octane in Canada that is suppose to have no ethanol in it. Which to my understanding, be considered pure gas. Am now trying Chevron, but am buying 94 octane to stick with the no ethanol edict. Thoughts? What do most use for their B7's? Why?

    Ontario here
I tried a few different gas stations with my A4. It didn't like the gas at Petro but Pioneer and Husky felt much better. Then I started reading about carbon cleaning, carbon buildup etc. This is where I ran into the info also about the gas stations with no ethanol. There was a site it linked I'll see if I can find it and link it here but you can search your location and it will tell you which brands are ethanol free. In my neck of the woods that would be Shell, Canadian Tire and Costco. Out of the three I've started using only Shell 91it will be interesting when I get a CC in the summer to see how much there is.

Shell is usually considered way up there, I live in the middle of no where and even my shop said don't use the chain convenience store gas cause it can throw a cel, so I only use the Sunoco. Not sure if you have them in Canada

I only use Shell 93 with V Power. It’s a top tier fuel on the preferred fuel list and there are 2 stations by my house and a couple on my way to work. The detergents they put in V power fuel is suppose to be excellent.

I have only used Shell 93 in this car. I had a carbon clean done 6 months ago and replaced my injectors at the same time with S3 units. I have to replace my intake manifold and will do that in a couple months. I’m curious to see how using V power on recently cleaned valves will keep them looking after 8-10 months of use.

I'm a Shell guy as well. I did run the Sunoco 94, before Petro bought the stations, in my B5 A4 (GIAC K04) and although I did feel a little bit more power it was too jumpy - like a lag then power. I went back to Shell 91 and it smoothed right out.

I still use Shell in all my cars but have downgraded to 89 for the allroad temporarily as the wife usually drives it and she can't put 91 in - all she sees is dollars disappearing.....

I use VPower but I think the Shell I go to only goes as high as 91 octane. Any other Canadians wanna let me know if I'm thinking right or maybe I am using 93. I just know it's the VPower.

Best Gas / Preferred Fuel......Discussion and thoughts

Gas is pretty much the same, only thing changing is how much ethanol they add to it. For you to notice a difference I would be amazed.

edit: I was referring to one stations "91" to another gas stations "91". The ethanol might have a slight impact but probably not noticeable. The branding of certain gas like V-Power make it sound like you should go faster lol.

Correct, we drive turbo cars with a pretty high compression ratio so you want at least 91 octane. Otherwise your ECU will make changes (such as pulling timing) to protect your engine from harm (such as detonation). This protection robs you of power and fuel economy, after all the engine is not running right because the ecu has to constantly protect it from pinging it's way down the road.

If you feel like it is a waste to run 93, then get a stage 1 tune for 93 octane and I promise you will no longer mind paying for 93

Vancouver area here as well. I live close to the border so I always cross the Peace Arch or Pacific Highway and get Shell, Mobil or Exxon from Blaine, Washington. The gas is about 30-40% cheaper there compared to Canada and I always find that the 92 octane in Shell takes me further compared to the other two.

Any top-tier 91-93. I doubt DI motors will see any benefit from one brands detergents over another.

Ive used 87 octane when I first purchased my B7. Didnt catch it at first but I later realized why a Kia ran away and left me.
Now its nothing less than 93 octane.

Sorry I meant to say all 91 octane is the same. Or all 87 is the same. Obviously 91 octane and 87 is different...

I don’t know if you’re referring to me. Anyway I didn’t say there was a difference between different stations. I said I felt a difference. Just like many people talk about the “butt dyno”. If I “feel” there is a difference I’m going to use my preference of gas that “feels” best.

I always use Shell 93 but if on a road trip and no Shell around, will use another major brand 93 octane. It's strange these days seeing third party trucks delivering to my local Shell station though, makes me second guess the quality. I know its branding but still, not seeing a Shell branded truck show up and just a random blank tanker makes me think twice these days.

Also only use stations that have a high volume of traffic so I know the tanks are constantly getting refilled to help alleviate getting bad or old gas. Yeah, i'm still alittle OCD in my though processes.

Always use and fill up shell 91 before 1/4 tank. If not available, I go to chevron.

The government regulations for gas and diesel are very strict. Its similar to buying the store brand aspirin and the name brand. Chemical make up is exact same. I wouldn't worry about it.

For the butt dyno if it makes you feel like its faster than I say stay brand loyal. I wish I could gain horsepower from a certain gas station's 93 octane.

I know it’s placebo but what I’m saying suppose you drive with one and feel like the car is more sluggish. You’re not going to continue buying it because there are other choices. Especially if they are all pretty much the same. You’re going to continue using one that you feel gives better performance.

well the physics says something else.

time to watch some engineering explained... also his last vid about turbo blankets is very interresting.

but yeah, the butt dyno should'nt see difference on a stock 2.0t b7. They have tested a A3, with similar specs.

I use ethanol free gasoline in all my yard equipment (6 pieces) for several reasons two of wlhich are: they run better and from everything I've read the fuel stays fresher substantially longer than ethanol laden gasoline. I wish I could use it in my A4 but in the US 99% of the pump gas has about 10% ethanol in it (not counting E85). I have to go out of my way to purchase ethanol-free gasoline at either a farm coop (how ironic) or at a boat marina. The FAA allows me to use gasoline in one of my airplanes but it cannot have any ethanol in it. In the others I use 100 octane low-lead aviation fuel which has no ethanol in it.

Luckily ethanol free fuel in higher octane grades ie 95,98 ( unrelated to US ratings ) is readily available so far,but its slowly morphing into your situation...

Resist this as best you can. In the US we get hit with a double whammy as the ethanol in gasoline is tax payer subsidized and, as corn is diverted to ethanol production, the cost of food, bread, cereal, meat has gone up quite a bit over the past 10 years. Especially hurts those struggling to make ends meet. Idiots in Congress are responsible.

Yea the far-reaching implications of virtually everything....The situation you described is not great for a gas guzzling nation lol

I buy gas at safeway as the one by my office is at least 50¢ cheaper than the major stations. If I'm getting gas near my house I get 76 or Shell, but only because they're convenient.

Frankly I don't particularly care where I buy my gas from though I generally avoid Arco...

You might have opened a can of worms as digression is always on the cards here.
Don't take it to heart by any means my comments or others, its a big topic you sparked up -the whole west is a gas guzzling WORLD and the remainder is not far behind as that world gains affluence...
The Arabs have had enough of " giving it away " and want to diversify as they see the change in the world towards renewables. We have seen the price hike here in Oz recently.98 octane is ~ $A1.60 now-expensive.Buy oil shares I'm told.
Back to your core topic,I used to run Wolfie on 95 octane,an Audi tuner was shocked but obviously the ECU could deal with it and there was no detonation.I am tuned and was then.I now run on 98,get slightly better fuel consumption and I'm going to stick with it for maybe the cleaner running aspects.
Maybe petrol poverty will force me back to 95 in the future lol

Keep in mind everyone, they measure octane differently elsewhere than North America. 98 is like 92/3 equivalent for us ‘Mericans.

    RON to PON

I always hated dis-similarities in anything until I went to Estonia,my heritage country and saw how everything was in the ex-soviet union.
Everything was painted the same color and basically there were only a few models of cars.
    Individuality was non-existent.
So now I actually like all these differences although they can bend your brain sometimes.
But,hey why are you guy's still using IMPERIAL ? that is really retarded, you guy's meaning row that isn't on metric-it's just so easier (we had imp. decades ago)
Fuel octane comparisons is pretty easy though...

Best Gas / Preferred Fuel......Discussion and thoughts

Yeah when we say 98 = USA 94/5

Also nothing here is imperial, it’s simply different methodologies

The pro's and con's of using gas with no ethanol is what I was getting at really. All gas here in western Canada is 87, 89, 91.... with the exception being Chevron having 94, which is their version of pure gas(no ethanol). Shell 's top gas ; Vpower 91 also is considered pure gas here. Anything im missing? Cpl buds say Chevron 94 is better than Shell 91 but don't know why.

I do, what I can do, when I can do it.

Except aeronautical and marine navigation also naval architecture sometimes still uses the mostly obfuscated imperial measurement system

All Flash, hope you're getting the info you need,us from the Antipodes can't help you much with your fuels !

Yeah I know, i was an avionic engineer with RAAF. Im still good at crossing between the various standards. you have various versions of imperial and metric (e.g. AF) and this is compounded by the fact that most warbirds are made up of components from several countries (e.g. UK, USA, Italy etc) and they all use 3 different standards at times :)
