Dropped off my 16 S6 for an after Christmas wrapping...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I almost traded my 16 S6 for an 18 S6 - but didn't want to swap all the mods. So I decided to wrap it instead.

Going medium matte grey. Gloss black roof and all chrome trim (except for a few parts on the stock S6 front grill).

Pick it up Thursday night. Will post pics then.

    It'll be a new car! Can't wait.

Should turn out badass. Post pics when done. Love my factory matte RS - really puts light and lines of the car on her like no gloss paint can.

tempted to do the same to my car if I don't trade-it in when my extended warranty expires. But man, the cost! If you're not interested in changing the color of the car, is it more cost-efficient to wrap the entire car in something like Xpel, or are you still better off going with a color wrap?

I'm fairly certain Xpel would cost more than Avery or 3m Vinyl wrap as the Xpel material cost is quite a bit higher.

Good to know brother. I had wrongly assumed it would be less. Most recent quote I received for full Xpel was around $6200, which I just couldn't justify. I may have to get some quotes on Avery to see if that is a little closer to my comfort zone.

I had my Daytona Grey Pearl RS7 wrapped in XPEL STEALTH. It was pricy, but it's hard to understate how good it looks in person. The pictures don't do it justice. In sunlight, some of the pearl effect still shows through. In shadows it's matte. If you can stomach the price, you won't be disappointed.

My company here is doing a deep wrap...meaning inside the doors, etc. And doing the outer trim of the front grill, redoing one side of the door trim previously done, and the chrome strip on trunk. My roof and doors are already wrapped so that saved about 600 i guess. The cost was insane good...total was 3300. No matter how I did the numbers it came out better this way than buying an 18 and then swapping all my upgrades and then still having to wrap the roof. My car just turned 16k so its still fairly new.

Thank you - I love the specialness of having a matte car, especially when its factory!

Matte nardo would be a killer choice as well if you decide to wrap it that way.

Great fitment out of the box, no spacers needed. Only negative is because of the porous nature of the finish of the matte black wheels - there is always this 'film' of dust that seems to never want to come of them even after a thorough cleaning.

Got them from TAG - great service, fast turnaround, etc.

Sweet! Can't wait to see it.

I moved on to brushed steel (textured), with brushed black on lip spoiler, roof, and rear spoiler. Love it.

20ís will clear ceramics if the offset is right, Limey has 20ís on his P model w/ceramics. Check with Tag, they fit a ton of cars so they should know if it works.

I'm not sure regarding a 2018. I know that on mine, it's not totally straight forward to fit it in (I didn't do this one, prior owner did). This thread seems to give some details.

I love the looks, fit and finish of modern wrap technology, but my OCD nature can't deal with the different color under the hood, inside the door jambs, under the trunk lid, etc, etc.

It will fit in terms of size and shape. The RS6 grilles locking tabs DO NOT match up with the S6, and need to be dremel'd off. Not too hard to do, just need to have the stones to cut into a perfectly good/expensive brand new grille a fair bit. Worth it in my opinion, as it looks great.

20's will generally clear ceramics just fine. Turns out the calipers for the ceramics hug the rotors more closely than the steel brembos do, and actually give a little more clearance.
My 20x8.5 wheels with a 35offset clear the ceramics without issue:

I'll get some pics this weekend. My anal retentiveness got to me...

    DON'T judge the following:

I went back to my car wrap place to see about doing the entire inside of doors. It was my mistake originally as when they said deep wrap the entire inside of doors, trunk depressions etc is actually a "Show Wrap." Asking how much to do the 4 doors - thinking I could live with the minor other white parts - they quoted another 2k just for the four door insides. That would have made it 6k total. Not really up for that as while I like it...not sure how long I would keep it and the addt'l 2k seems a bit unreasonable since those parts rarely show.

Now - still being retentive...I thought...hhmm...I could just buy the vinyl and attempt it myself...but my previous attempts have been sorry at best. And the inside of the doors are really curvy and have difficult shapes for wrap. I guess I can see where the 2k is earned. lol

So - I remembered PlastiDip and I've used it in small areas in the past. And they have a metallic matte gray that is 90% a match. So - I thought...lets do a test. The pics below are a TEST. It is not how I would do the actual job. I would tape perfectly and do coats versus this one coat test I did in 20 min. And do every part inside the doors that is white.

Super easy and inexpensive way to do all the inside of the door sills and door sides while matching the wrap. And the best thing...it just peels right off if you don't dig it.

Here is my test I just did...and it was in a hurry as I have one more color to test for matching. Not sure I'll do it but first pass its not bad. And again...its the inside of the doors. Here is the back - all the white will be matte metallic gray.

This is after it has dried for 45 minutes:

The PlastiDip looks really good in the pic. Better than the $2k addition, just be careful and donít spray any into the interior.

All cars on here look great! My Audi is black and would love to change the color but have been hesitant towards a vinyl wrap. You say yours has been on since day one. Considering the cost, how long do these generally last in real world use? Positives and negatives after owning? Thanks guys!

They last around 4 years plus.
Cons of having a wrap, which I just went through: if you ever need body work a couple years after you got your wrap, odds are you can't just throw a new piece of vinyl on the panel you repaired and have it match with the rest of the car, as the rest will have faded some. You can't color match with surrounding panels like you can with paint. Mileage will vary based on film and weather conditions of where you live.
That said, I do really enjoy the look.

Driver side almost done. I should have used the passenger side as my test so I could perfect the technique. Still have some touchup to do. But this cost less than $28 and only took a total of 3 hours including dry time between coats. At some point I'll do the ends of the doors, too.

II love this stuff. If you get it on ANYTHING (I kept the overspray off the leather and dash etc) like the rubber door surrounds, etc...just let it dry and it rubs/peels right off. Will get around to the ends of the doors at some point. Those will be super easy as the masking is simple due to clean lines.

Looking good! I might have to do the same.
