High Mileage B6 S4 Auto Trans Issues

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi guys,

I've got 328,000+ km on my 2005 S4. I've been driving it since 250k. The trans as far as I know has never been serviced. Obviously, lifetime ATF is a joke - and this should have been changed at some point, but the car is at a tipping point for putting much money into.

    Here are my trans issues.

In August, the shifts started getting a bit too hard. Also, the downshifts are hard and feel a bit early.

In September, the shifts started to hold a bit too long - even had one instance getting on the highway where it revved at 6k until I hit the paddles, then it upshifted.

Now in a cold Toronto winter so far, I've had a few issues with the car going into first after backing out of the driveway. The first time, it revved high, made a whining noise, then clunked into gear. The second time, it wasn't as bad, but same noise, then clunked in.

I've been letting the car warm up for 15-20 mins before I go anywhere lately- and it has shifted fine into first the last two drives with longer warmups. But it's still shifting hard and holding gears longer than it should.

The car has been through a lot and needs a lot of work to be itself again.

    Issues
    Warped Rotors
    Needs front end rebuild
    Shocks need replacement
Cats are pretty much clogged (rear o2 readings all over)
    Timing chain never serviced
Usual rust for mileage near wheelwells, body otherwise good
Doesn't feel like it has the power it used to
    Fuel sender not working properly
    Oil level sensor failed

Needless to say, this car is running on borrowed time. I'm wondering if I should drive it until it dies, or is this trans issue worth working on? The car isn't worth much anymore, and it's nearing the tipping point for putting money and time into. I've been looking at 2009-12 S5s lately.

Any ideas? Worth changing the trans fluid and filter to see if it helps? Any idea what these trans symptoms indicate?

Thanks for any assistance or advice

Replacing filter and oil wont help. Look at my thread (will try to link it later) maybe it will seem familiar. Wasted so much by trying to go around without opening the trans, but at the end there was no other option.

EDIT: Replacing oil and filter made it worse in my case, as the metal shavings raise the pressure within the system. So if those go, the pressure will drop down even lower. Hook up the VCDS and see if there are any codes. Does PRNDS light up? Check Engine? I pulled Engine and trans all together to get all of the things to care of, Timing, rebuilding trans, seals, gaskets etc. Before this major thing i replaced : Oil, Filter, Solenoids, Valve body, Sonnax seal kit. Everytime they opened it up, it got worse and worse. So the more i drove, the more damage i did to the trans. In your case, i'd drop both and get all those things that you listed taken care of. BUT(!!!!!!) Before You do that, do compression test and if the compression is messed up, i'd say get rid of the car (part it out or sell it to someone who'd be willing to work on it)

    Thanks guys,

PRNDS lights up occasionally. The CEL's I'm getting are for misfires and O2s - though I need to get them read again since the issue got worse. I'm leaning to selling the car to let someone else have a crack at it - not sure what a partially functioning 330,000km 2005 S4 is worth though.

Update - Didn't drive the car last week. Started the car today - rough idle, and doesn't go into gear(D or R). PRNDS is lit up.

I think her days may be done....

Anyone interested in a high km 2005 S4 in need of much love? https://photos.app.goo.gl/efyVm7MaKCzdj9O53

I'll throw the 1 year old in. She's a PITA lately....

Temps have warmed up a bit lately - warmed the car up, and it's working again. I may see what the local dealer will give me as a trade in on a CPO '11 S4.
