    Vibration at idle

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello,

I feel like my car vibrates strongly when its in idle, and I wanted to post a video for you guys to tell me what you think it can be? When no one is sitting in the passenger its vibrates pretty badly. I've already changed my plugs I have no codes showing up, I did do a scan and it says I have P2006+P2007 probably due to vacuum leak but theres no CEL light. I believe I found the source of the leak but not sure it would be the culprit, looks like my intake hose coming from the intake box going to the throttle body is seperating right at the point where the secondary air filter is right before it connects to the TB. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

This engine is notable for rough idle. They all idle rough. So many owners complained about it that there is a TSB for it. (24AS) ECU reprogram . Not sure how rough yours is, but you will never get it to be silky smooth . BTW, your link doesn't work for me.

I know but I think this is a little excessive, btw do you know if the issue I described above with my intake tube could be the culprit of a vacuum leak? Also I made the video public it should work now.

It's a 2010 just got 90,600 miles. No mods. I'd say it's been like two months since this started happening. Were you able to watch the video?

Normal. Something I hate and it drives me nuts, but it's normal. Open your driver side door and put your hand on it. It shakes like a mid 60's muscle car with a big cam in it. When I very first started test driving S4's I passed on the first 2 thinking they were having issues.

IMO if there was a way to bump the idle up to say 950rpm it would be fine. My last MazdaSpeed 3 had a means up upping the idle and I did as the motor mounts would cause it to shake a bit. Not sure why no one has been able to do it or made it so.

That's pretty unfortunate considering it's a luxury car. If no one is sitting in that seat it vibrates like crazy. Did you watch the video by any chance ?

The car was made for driving not idling. The rough idle is what it is. You can either live with it or get another car. To me it is a very minor issue that has no negative ramifications. I don't even notice it anymore. It's like having a supermodel girl friend that wants red hot sex all the time but farts a lot.

It doesn't sound normal to me, vibration aside. Not sure if that's the video just picking up that frequency better than others or by though. I'm gonna cold start mine in a few, it's below freezing so should be good.

On another note, if this started two months ago it's not normal.

    LOGIC!!!
At minimum smoke test/check for any vacuum leaks, shouldn't be to expensive at an indy.

As soon as you said shaking at idle, I thought of the Engine/Transmission Mounts. Get that looked at.

Most of the sound is from the chair vibrating you can see when I hold it mostly stops.

I noticed that the place where the secondary air filter is right before the throttle body the tube is actually separated could that be the source of the leak since I don't have any cel lights going off I would think it's somewhere before the MAF but I'm just speculating.

Would I have to take it to a shop to do? Or is this something I can do on my own?

Gotcha, I was listening more than watching the first time. So guess the vibration is new and not just the noise then. I’m not sure how a vacuum leak would cause that, honestly, but if you suspect something check it out.

I would think more along the lines of main damper or the like. With no codes being thrown I would think it’s mechanical like a pulley or mount. If I could figure out how to post a video I’d post mine, over 100k and the seat is solid, no vibration.

Just got a quote from an Indy shop for replacing left and right motor mounts. They want $1800 parts and labor does that seem reasonable ? Also anyone have any recommendations for shops in NYC /LI area ?

Mine had this as well but it was intermittent or so low I didn't notice it, Since I swapped in the JHM 179 crank I haven't noticed it, or maybe its just super low. Either way its normal, to what degree I do not know. If there isn't already one a thread should be started on all the little things to expect when looking/purchasing an S4. I also noticed when pointed out that one bank of the engine is noisier than the other.

There's a guy here on the forum, militant-grunt, he's been working on my car for some time now and he is freaking great, real gear-head, there's nothing he can't do. He's from Queens and works for Audi Manhattan, certified Audi tech, PM me for his contact info - I'm sure he'd give you a better deal than this.
