with regards to those valve covers that got sandblasted, i washed mine in the tub... drain rinse repeat about 10 times because a vendor here did the same thing with the sandblasting...

ended up tossing it in a vibratory parts washer overnight and made sure no particles were coming out before running it.

I hear you on the motivation aspect. It does help to get back at it though.
Yeah lol there's a number of options. This is a 1.05. I ordered it from full-race, the dude I talked to there said other 3 liters, like supras and BMW's, will clear 800whp with this turbo. Obviously apples to oranges... But why can't fruit be compared? Lol but I figured I'd see what happens.

When I started this it was going to be all out, hold nothing back, but now that I have so much money into I'm thinking of keeping the tuning more conservative. If it flies apart idk if I have it in me to go through this again lol.

I was thinking of doing that. Probably would be fine but not being able to see up there is just going to bother me lol. I'm thinking of cutting the baffles out and having someone weld them back in

Ha... I was pretty much that way too. At first I was like, gonna race this this thing and flog it on the track all the time. Now I don't even want to go to the 1/4 mi track after putting so much into it. I'm enjoying it enough on the street anyway...

Is your manifold done up for Tial or Turbosmart wastegates?

Shaved the manifold down a bit, fits pretty nicely now. Not sure what to do about the vacuum ports. Just cut them off and tap them for plugs?

Also need to make some coolant lines. Right now I'm thinking a banjo off the front, going straight down would be good for the feed. I was thinking some sort of hard line might be better for getting down to the freeze plug.

Sometime next week I'll be having bungs for the egt's welded in and then getting the manifolds ceramic coated.

    Obligatory side by side

I also discovered why that F21 seized. I found this in the hot side

Looks like the inside wall of the manifold fell apart

I’m doing the same with a gt35 build and we’re having to modify the manifolds to get it to fit.

It was hitting both the inlet manifold and fuel rail. Are you using a stock rail or aftermarket?

Aftermarket rails, I took them off when I was grinding the back of the manifold and haven't fitted them since. I'll have to double check when I get my exhaust manifolds back

Just got my manifolds from having egt bungs welded in. Looked great in their shop, but it was pretty dimly lit. Got home and realized they didn't drill holes they just welded the bungs on top of the pipe 🙄

Are you wanting to use the factory EGTs?

Yeah, sucks lol the place is close to where I live but unfortunately I work an hour away so it's hard to get there when they're open. I'll probably just try and drill it myself. The probe is like 5mm, the bung is like 9 so should have room to just go down the middle.

Monty, I don't have plans of retaining the factory egt's, this is what I went with:

Looks like I should have plenty of room for fuel lines

I bought the pb5 oil line kit, with all the slack I have it looks like running the feed around the back would be the cleanest way but it's awfully close to the up pipes. Not sure if that would be a problem or not, maybe some fire sleeve would help?

I've been flip flopping on ceramic coating or not. Containing the heat would be nice but I'm concerned about the pipes cracking.

Also not sure what to do with that power steering line lol. The coolant feed is an easy straight line more or less, the return is going to be more interesting. The oil return is a really tight squeeze, I don't think what came in the pb5 kit is going to work.

Just take your PS line to a hydraulic line shop to get modified for $30.

Also, Those bellows you have there won't hold up. They will last about 10-15k miles before blowing out depending on how you abuse the car. You should get the vibrant Turbo Flex with Interlock Liner version. I used them on my 3rd time fixing my up pipe at the recommendation from Jared @ VLMspec after blowing out the bellows style you have. Might as well fix it now before you put the motor back in the car.

If your setup isn’t braced well they will crack but there’s nothing wrong with those bellows, they just don’t allow movement like the vibrant type do.

What setups have you used those style bellows on? S4s or other platforms?

Monty, thanks for the heads up. I'll check those Vibrant bellows out. There is a brace that bolts right under the turbo and goes back to the transmission. Not sure how much it would help.

I might just leave the bellows be and hope for the best... I'm just so anxious to get this running lol.

You just had your power steering line shortened on your build, correct? I'm hoping to be able to set everything in the car soon so I can probably just figure that out then.

Other platforms but they are actually preferred over the other kind....assuming it’s braced

    Checking how it fits

    Unfortunately it doesn't 😞

I could cut the firewall out to make room up by the flange but that wouldn't help with that v band so I'm not sure what I'll do

Even with more room for the v band and turbo flange the pipes might still hit. In those photos the driver's engine mount is in but the passenger still needs to go back a bit

Just take a hammer to both offending spots. As long as it's not in contact with that support bar that runs on the back side of the false firewall, you have clearance back there. I'd seriously consider bashing a couple of dents before I considered cutting it out.

That's honestly what I was thinking lol. Once I saw how it was hitting I just walked away but I should be able to get back to it later.

My black car is going to get scrapped once I'm sure I don't need anything else off of it so if I decide to cut anything I'll probably cut the black one up first and see how it looks

I've heard the allroad has a bit more room back there so that might be it. The vband clamp is hitting at the bottom where it looks structural. The flange is hitting up on the thin false firewall that doesn't look too important.

I'm think of loosening the subframe bolts and seeing if there's any wiggle room to maybe shift it forward a tad but I don't think that will be enough to matter.

I loosened the v band clamps and rocked the turbo pretty far forward in order to get it back as far as it is but the flange is the biggest issue and rocking the turbo forward isn't really helping there.

My plan right now is cut the thin firewall out and grab the old persuader to make some room for that clamp.

Removing the false firewall is something I had been thinking about doing anyways. Once it runs I'll probably try to put some sort of strut bar back there for good measure.

I was thinking about the power steering pressure line too. There's so much going on back there I think I'm just going to forget about the factory lines and run an Aeroquip AQP high pressure hose to the rack.

You don't have problems removing vin number?
Saw some single turbo builds where they just do like that, cut vin out...

Does it gona be a track car only?

Shouldn't have any problems, I've never had an officer check my VIN other than at the lower corner of the windscreen.

I've got that lower square tube section trimmed back considerably, should have lots of room now. Once I test fit again I'll weld a steel plate over top of that open section.

It won't be a dedicated track car, I intend to use it for commuting when the weather is nice lol. But hopefully it will see some track time as well 😁

IDK, it looks really good to me! Are there any heat issues opening up the secondary firewall? I thought about doing it on my build a while back just to have more access to work on the engine while it's in the car...

The single turbo is a hard route but I think you'll be really happy with the results. There's a lot to be said for future maintenance and upgradability; not having to pull the engine for turbo related issues is a huge plus!

Sick build man, sucks how it's taking so long, I know the pain with mine but everything was custom. Hopefully your bellows hold up better than mine but both of mine cracked on the dyno and just dialed it in to 15lb.20191101_102343.jpeg20191025_095554.jpeg

Thanks! I am happy with how it turned out. This was pretty much my first forray into welding. The plate I welded in was 1/8" but the existing metal was very thin and I blew threw a couple spots. But overall it went well and seems pretty solid.

It's probably not the best thing for the battery to be an inch from the turbo lol but otherwise I can't imagine there'd be any issues. I'll probably move the battery to the trunk.

My initial cut out wasn't big enough and the manifolds still hit on the passenger side, which is why it's not symmetrical. I didn't cut the driver's side back to match because I might need that coolant bottle mount and I figured it wouldn't hurt to have some metal between the brake master and downpipe.

Thanks man, the way this is dragging on does suck but I think I can finally see a light at the end lol.

I did see your bellows in your build. That sucks, Monty also warned me awhile ago but I'm really hoping the manifolds being braced will prevent that.

Yeah mine aren't braced and that probs added to it in the end, but probs better manufacturing than mine as well.
It does look close at least, that false firewall can you chop all of it out or does the rack bolt to it underneath at all? I'm thinking of trying to make some more room back there.
