As others have mentioned the install is easier than ever. The instructions are better and the new harness is a bit easier to get in from my experience. You do not need a bunch of special tools. I will review them in the video but the most obscure items I needed were the VW/Audi radio keys. Overall I am very happy with the unit primarily for the sound and speed, that said there are a couple of outstanding items. Here is where I stand now.
I did have to pull and replace all of the s2 components. Even the mounting trim for the screen is different. You also MUST remember to look at the user guide from the wiki also. There are a few steps (like setting the car type) in the protected menu that is in that document and is pretty critical. One item that IS NOT documented yet is that if your are using a non-USB camera for your DVR on RSnav you need to enter the ARM settings in the protected Factory settings menu and change the camera type. I am also missing the Y cable to use the OEM GPS antenna so for now I am using the one that shipped with the S3 (which is also different from the one in the S2 so that needed to be pulled also).
I do not yet seem to have issues with the unit restarting or anything however there are a few outstanding issues.
- I can't sort out how to get any DVR like software or features for my front camera which is a CVBS type cam connected by the RCA DVR plug. Daniel has told me that this is not possible. To record a camera on RSnav you need to use a AHD (USB) camera.
- Any audio or video playing on my RSnav seems to stop (not just mute) playing when I go to MMI functions like the car menu. This is definitely different than my S2 model Daniel has provided a solution to this that I have confirmed in testing. First you need to update software and MCU to the latest versions using the directions on the Wiki. Then you need to disable the center speaker navigation option under the sound settings called nav.guidance.
- I am also unable to get wireless android auto to work after a couple hours of troubleshooting. I have a Samsung s20+. I am pretty sure there is a trick here specific to RSnav because I have set it up correctly on other systems. This issue is outstanding and others have confirmed they have this issue. Daniel has not responded on a fix for this. He did indicate it is due to Android security changes. They want to find a fix but since it is a OS issue that is complicated
- The feature where you could activate google assistance (or any voice assistant) by long pressing the button on the steering wheel is not working on the S3 like it did on the S2. Daniel has told me he hopes to have an update that will fix this end of October.
- The feature where the mode roll button on the steering wheel would switch between the apps on the S2 seems to also be missing on the S3 but that is less important. For the record I have always wanted the feature to be that pressing that roller would activate the RSnav's running app screen THEN allow the roller to scroll through but that is just me. Daniel has said this would be hard to do because this button now works as a dedicated hardware back button in Android. There are apps that would not work without that.
- The feature to add your own custom car image to the menu screen that was in the S2 is missing for the S3. Again Daniel has confirmed this will be a later update.
- The one item I was thinking was better in the S3 unit but does not seem to be fixed is the control of the bluetooth stack. It still needs to be managed from the hand free software and CAN'T be managed via the android settings. This means that pairing other bluetooth devices like my ODBii dongle from Torque or my RGB lighting controller for the underglow is seemingly not possible. Daniel has responded that the standard OS bluetooth configuration does indeed not work on the S3. This was due to changes they needed to make to keep the hands free system working plus make Apple Carplay work correctly. They are aware of the problem and are hopeful to release a software fix to at least allow programs like Torque or dash commander to work with a ODBII dongle. However systems like Optima RGB or Draggy are not currently in plan.
- The temperature reading on the RSNav is about 4 or 5 degrees lower than the reading on my Audi climate control. Daniel has confirmed this is a known issue and he needs to do some configuration to make this work. With COVID restrictions that is proving difficult.
- The Android Auto icon is customizable but the Apple Carplay is not. Daniel has confirmed this is a known issue and they will look to make that possible in a future version.
- Changing the application linked to a menu item does not change the icon and name like it used too on older RSnav models.. Daniel has confirmed this is a known issue and hops to work on a solution later October.
- I have recieved and installed the Y cable splitter to use the GPS OEM antenna. This is not working for me where the antenna that comes with the RSnav does work. I confirmed the install is correct and secure but it is still not working. I am awaiting feedback from Daniel.
I agree with earlier posts that the S3 versus the S1 is night and day and not worth the comparison. For those with a S2 here is a quick comparison list.
Whats new
- Faster response
- Bigger screen (if you get the 12.3)
- MUCH Better sound
- RSNav software upgrades such as better sound level control and new dashboard
- Ability to record camera inputs (DVR) type capability
- Ability to support USB cameras
- Wireless android auto (supported by I cant get it working yet)
- More stable and compatible Android 9
- Equalizer and Sound processing control
- Split screen
What is missing or a problem
- The non-OEM GPS and 3G antenna wires are identical and have no labels.
- Custom image upload
- Long press of voice command for google assistant
- Scroll apps from steering wheel button
- Built in radio app (not sure anybody cares)
- Some customization options like assigning specific actions for steering wheel buttons.
