OMG. so awesome. Finally got some time today to pull the display back out so that I could properly hook it up and install the GPS antenna. I dragged out my camera and tripod so that I could video the full installation. In the cold the battery didnt last very long, so the video didn't work out as well as I would have hoped. I did manage to capture some of it, I'll link to the clips once I've uploaded them to YouTube.
It was also bloody cold out today, -10 so kept having to go inside to warm up my hands.
Ok, onto the goodness.
Install, very easy for a DIY.
Steps:
1: remove glovebox. It is held in place by ten 8mm bolts. The fuse cover on the right side of the dash needs to be removed to access one of the bolts. There are five bolts at the front top of the glovebox. One in the back on the right side. One behind the AMI unit. Two underneath the glove box at the front near the hinges. Move the glove box to the trunk to get it out of the way. Once all of the bolts are out there is one electrical connector that needs to be unclipped.
2: Remove heater controls. Use plastic trim removal tools to carefully pry it away. Once loose, just swing it to the left side of the console to get it out of the way.
3: Remove dash surround around factory display. Just pull carefully or use plastic trim tools. No bolts. Unplug hazard lights button electrical connector.
4: Remove air vents above radio unit. Use plastic trim removal tools. No bolts, just carefully pry away. Once loose unclip the electrical connector.
5: Remove radio. Four 8mm bolts. Carefully pull the radio out from the dash. There will be a number of connectors on the back of the unit. Each of them will have a portion of the connector that is meant to be depressed so that the electrical connector will release from the back of the unit.
6: Remove factory display. Four torx T20 screws hold it in place at each corner. There is an electrical connector that needs to be unplugged.
7: Install supplied GPS antenna. (Yes it is required. I can confirm there will be no GPS signal without it). I decided to install the antenna beside the center channel speaker under the plastic grille. I created a small bracket that is held on place with 3M automotive double sided tape. I then attached the antenna to the top of the bracket with the supplied self adhesive backing.
With the grille back in place it is not at all visible. Using the supplied gps strength application already installed in the unit. I was able to see the signal strength before and after the grille was installed. No noticeable drop in signal strength.
In order to feed the wire from the GPS antenna back into the area of the dash where the RSNAV Android unit is, I had to use one of the plastic trim tools to make the gap between the upper vents (permanently attached to the dash) and the dash opening to the factory display to be able to fit the small end of the GPS cable through. Doesnt need to be much bigger of a gap, but it does need to be spread apart a little bit.
8: Install supplied RSNAV wiring harness. Two connectors are needed to plug into the CANBUS. One connector goes into the back of the factory radio. One goes into the factory harness connector that used to plug into the back of the radio. There is then two factory connectors, fuse block and remaining connections (video/aux1/aux2 etc) that need to be fed up into the top of the dash to be able to plug into the back of the new Android unit. (This is where you will likely skin some knuckles etc fishing the wires up there. I did. lol)
9: Install the RSNAV supplied display adapter wiring harness to the factory connector.
10: Install the supplied metal adapter plate. Reuse the original Torx T20 screws (4) to mount the bracket. Fish the cables through the two holes in the front of the unit as you are mounting the bracket. The big connector needs to come out of the hole on the right, with the small connector and GPS connector coming out of the hole on the left.
11: Install factory dash trim back in place. Make sure the wires are fished out of the opening where the factory display would have been.
12: Install plastic display mounting bracket. The bracket is meant for a B8.5 dash apparently so it will fit better than on the B8, but honestly with the size and shape of this display its not noticeable. Remember to fish the wires through the adapter the same as you did with the metal bracket.
(Forgot to take photo of this. Will take one tomorrow and update the post)
13: Install the RSNAV display. You will have two electrical connectors and the GPS connector to plug into the back of the unit. (Make sure the car and accessory mode is off. No radio etc). Once all of the connections are made. The display slides down onto the bracket from the top down. There are three plastic tabs it slides into to hold it in place. Once the display is all of the way down, Power it on to make sure it functions correctly. (Confirms all of the connectors have a good connection and are properly seated) Install two screws (supplied) into the plastic bracket.
14: ENJOY
