10.25” Android head unit / display (RSNAV)

For those of you that have been following a few of these threads related to the new Android based displays for our cars, this thread will be dedicated to the installation and questions related to the 10.25” unit installed in a B8 (2010), with the factory Concert & B&O option. My car is a non-nav, non-mmi unit.

I’ll be installing an aftermarket backup camera as well, and with being a manual trans car I’ll also document how to install the relay to pickup when the car is put into reverse.

I received the unit from Daniel last Sunday, but I’ve been busy with work and with the shorter days I haven’t been able to do much more than quickly install the head unit to start enjoying that awesomeness.

This weekend I will pull it back out and video and document the installation process to be able to share with everyone.

Here is a quick shot of it installed (without the factory bezel back in place)

I am lucky to be an early adopter/beta tester for A4Android. Just to be clear, I am not associated in any way with RSNAV and I am not being paid or compensated in any way for this.

If anyone is looking for more information on this, just google RSNAV, or PM A4Android.

No discussion of pricing please. We don't want to have this thread deleted.

Tim, I'm stoked for this. I have pretty much the exact same set of options. 2010 premium plus, manual trans, with the factory Concert head unit and B&O speakers/amp. I've already upgraded to the B8.5 HVAC controls and fill color cluster display.

Any idea on expected overall cost? Looks great mounted on your dash. I'm interested in the offer speed and responsiveness, if you can give input on that.

Buy from eBay, update coding using VCDS, bring to dealership to have 'Component Protection' (CP) removed. That's it.

Looking for cheaper forwarder, but it's already too 'slow' IMO. I mean if you are willing to wait nearly a month to arrive, I can get you very cheap shipping. But, I don't want any stuff to get lost in transit.

$80/€70 is a bit steep but if it means getting it under a week...

Ah... didn't I send you e-mail for the cause of current delay and it will be shipped next week?
BTW, Tim (Cybernet99) isn't any associate of RSNAV, and he's just a beta tester with testing equipment.
The unit he has is a loaner I provided personally. He'd also get the retail version when we ship next week.

    This is not from Amazon, we can't have $19.95 express shipping for a 40cm x 30cm x 20cm/2Kg box.
If you are so concerned with shipping fees, then you can schedule your pick up from our factory/warehouse. DHL/FedEx wouldn't pick up any item if you pay less than 100USD.
I mean I could offer very cheap shipping without insurance and transit over a month to deliver, but do you really want that? I wouldn't be responsible if this expensive unit gets lost in transit.

Currently, DHL's transit time is 3 to 5 business days. EMS is about 5 to 7 business days. Except for the cases that the factory preps. being delayed, both shipping methods are doing great in terms of price and speed.

Have you explored having someone at the factory drop off the days shipments? I ship a lot of stuff for work and it always costs more to have a delivery company pick anything up. Easier to take it to thier shop and drop off.

We use shipping forwarders who have contracts with China Post and DHL to drop the shipping price down to that. However, since our monthly volume is less than 30 units, so we can't get better deal with them. Also, I see some of the forwarders hand carry the items to HK for even better pricing but that process usually causes a lot of mishandlings and delays. There is 'dumpping shipping' available providing 'fake' tracking code and taking over a month to deliver, but we don't want to do that for this expensive piece.

I want people to think about economics here. Who would deliver a large boxed good from china to america or europe if he or she is paid less than $80 for the journey? Most of our boxes are heavier and larger than a macbook box. If we sell like 100 units per month, we could do free shipping or $19.99 express shipping, but we are not that good. I know people are accustomed to those 'cheap' shipping fees, but the smaller quantity, the more expensive transit cost.

In reality, Most of chinese generic GPS's wholesale price is ranged from 200~300USD. Most of them marketed between 300~500 USD by sellers. So, the less expensive shipping or free shipping from Aliexpress or some other chinese sites are really 'overpriced shipping fee' included.

Our competitor's 10.25" unit with Android 4.4's wholesale price is USD 350, and the marketed price is ranging from 460 to 650 USD. Sure, I'd do free shipping if I can get the margin of 200~300USD per unit. Our unit is expensive, because we use 64bit octacore(A53), whereas others are using PX3(Arm A9) 32bit quadcore cpu. Those PX3 32bit with Android 7.1.2 isn't really running Android Nougat 64bit, but running water downed version of Android 5.1 32bit with Android Nougat skin. Px3(Arm A9) is now dumping on the part market in china. We are using native 64bit octacore cpu and running Android M in 64 bit. The performance isn't comparable.(Also the cost too!)

Personally I'd rather pay $80 to get it delivered in 3/4 days to my door than wondering during 3 weeks where my unit is (i.e. somewhere when Shenzhen and Madrid)... I still remember what happened when I bought my Chinese unit for $400 plus $50 costs, waited ages relying on some very approx tracking, had to return it cos it had died (another $60), wait for the seller to decide if he'd be 'willing' to replace it then wait ages again for the new one with again some very approx tracking info... All in all about $520 for a genuine PoS that I will never install (again)...

Maybe I would increase the prices by 100USD, and ship everything by FedEx, declare full value for the customs.
Then most people would end up paying over 1000 dollars in the end including duties, taxes and fees.

I'll take some footage/shots today of the packaging, so people will also be able to understand why shipping in general will be more expensive. It is very well packaged, and is not a small envelope or package. I believe Daniel is working very hard to deliver a top quality product, and it shows. Having met Daniel in person, I can assure you he is vey genuine and passionate about this product and the Audi community.

I am beta testing this unit, will share all of my feedback to Daniel, so I will be looking for bugs or suggestions to improve the installation or overall experience.

    Initial feeling, this is amazing!

OMG. so awesome. Finally got some time today to pull the display back out so that I could properly hook it up and install the GPS antenna. I dragged out my camera and tripod so that I could video the full installation. In the cold the battery didn’t last very long, so the video didn't work out as well as I would have hoped. I did manage to capture some of it, I'll link to the clips once I've uploaded them to YouTube.

It was also bloody cold out today, -10 so kept having to go inside to warm up my hands.

    Ok, onto the goodness.

Install, very easy for a DIY.

    Steps:

1: remove glovebox. It is held in place by ten 8mm bolts. The fuse cover on the right side of the dash needs to be removed to access one of the bolts. There are five bolts at the front top of the glovebox. One in the back on the right side. One behind the AMI unit. Two underneath the glove box at the front near the hinges. Move the glove box to the trunk to get it out of the way. Once all of the bolts are out there is one electrical connector that needs to be unclipped.

2: Remove heater controls. Use plastic trim removal tools to carefully pry it away. Once loose, just swing it to the left side of the console to get it out of the way.

3: Remove dash surround around factory display. Just pull carefully or use plastic trim tools. No bolts. Unplug hazard lights button electrical connector.

4: Remove air vents above radio unit. Use plastic trim removal tools. No bolts, just carefully pry away. Once loose unclip the electrical connector.

5: Remove radio. Four 8mm bolts. Carefully pull the radio out from the dash. There will be a number of connectors on the back of the unit. Each of them will have a portion of the connector that is meant to be depressed so that the electrical connector will release from the back of the unit.

6: Remove factory display. Four torx T20 screws hold it in place at each corner. There is an electrical connector that needs to be unplugged.

7: Install supplied GPS antenna. (Yes it is required. I can confirm there will be no GPS signal without it). I decided to install the antenna beside the center channel speaker under the plastic grille. I created a small bracket that is held on place with 3M automotive double sided tape. I then attached the antenna to the top of the bracket with the supplied self adhesive backing.

With the grille back in place it is not at all visible. Using the supplied gps strength application already installed in the unit. I was able to see the signal strength before and after the grille was installed. No noticeable drop in signal strength.

In order to feed the wire from the GPS antenna back into the area of the dash where the RSNAV Android unit is, I had to use one of the plastic trim tools to make the gap between the upper vents (permanently attached to the dash) and the dash opening to the factory display to be able to fit the small end of the GPS cable through. Doesn’t need to be much bigger of a gap, but it does need to be spread apart a little bit.

8: Install supplied RSNAV wiring harness. Two connectors are needed to plug into the CANBUS. One connector goes into the back of the factory radio. One goes into the factory harness connector that used to plug into the back of the radio. There is then two factory connectors, fuse block and remaining connections (video/aux1/aux2 etc) that need to be fed up into the top of the dash to be able to plug into the back of the new Android unit. (This is where you will likely skin some knuckles etc fishing the wires up there. I did. lol)

9: Install the RSNAV supplied display adapter wiring harness to the factory connector.

10: Install the supplied metal adapter plate. Reuse the original Torx T20 screws (4) to mount the bracket. Fish the cables through the two holes in the front of the unit as you are mounting the bracket. The big connector needs to come out of the hole on the right, with the small connector and GPS connector coming out of the hole on the left.

11: Install factory dash trim back in place. Make sure the wires are fished out of the opening where the factory display would have been.

12: Install plastic display mounting bracket. The bracket is meant for a B8.5 dash apparently so it will fit better than on the B8, but honestly with the size and shape of this display it’s not noticeable. Remember to fish the wires through the adapter the same as you did with the metal bracket.
(Forgot to take photo of this. Will take one tomorrow and update the post)

13: Install the RSNAV display. You will have two electrical connectors and the GPS connector to plug into the back of the unit. (Make sure the car and accessory mode is off. No radio etc). Once all of the connections are made. The display slides down onto the bracket from the top down. There are three plastic tabs it slides into to hold it in place. Once the display is all of the way down, Power it on to make sure it functions correctly. (Confirms all of the connectors have a good connection and are properly seated) Install two screws (supplied) into the plastic bracket.

It was also bloody cold out today, -10 so kept having to go inside to warm up my hands.

    Ok, onto the goodness.

Install, very easy for a DIY.

    Steps:

1: remove glovebox. It is held in place by eleven 8mm bolts. The fuse cover on the right side of the dash needs to be removed to access one of the bolts. There are five bolts at the front top of the glovebox. One in the back on the right side. One behind the AMI unit. Two underneath the glovebox at the front near the hinges. Move the glovebox to the trunk to get it out of the way.

Here is a quick video clip showing how smooth and responsive the unit it. Very impressed!

The wallpaper for the background I downloaded from el-tony.com (His wallpaper art is amazing!!); and the music player I am using in the video is "PowerAmp", which I purchased and downloaded from the Google Play store.

Unit looks great. Glad to hear the GPS antenna still works properly in the centre speaker location. That's exactly where I was planning to put mine.

Daniel are there plans move the stock interface to the centre position of the screen? I think it would look much better that way. Looks a little off pushed to the left side. Just a suggestion if it can even be done.

I can't wait to get my hands on one of these!

Really got to poking around with this today.

Figured out how to "easily" get the Micro SD card in and out of the unit. Poke the card to make it eject a little bit. Slide a business card behind it, then pushing the card against the business card, slide it out of the slot. Then slide the card with the business card to the edge of the unit so that you can actually grab it. Use the same method in reverse to put it back in. If you don't use a business card to get the micro sd card to stick out from the back of the unit just a little bit you won't be able to get the card back in the opening. It's a pain to do without using the business card trick.

I've setup a 64gb card in there now, recognizes the larger card perfectly. If you want to use the card to store music/photos/videos you need to format it in the device first, then copy the media on to it. Otherwise it wont work, even if it is FAT32 formatted.

Sorry if everyone else knows this ... I'm an Android Noob. I've been on iOS for years.

10.25” Android head unit / display (RSNAV)

What happens to your hazards? The button is originally right beside the oem screen.

Hazard button is relocated to the top left of the display. Is easy enough to still reach, but yes not as easy to reach in stock location with stock display. I’m ok with its access now.

there are some other pics that show the button, but it's basically located right around here, circled in red. i don't think thats too big of an issue it's still easy enough, just have to kind of reach around a little bit but i'm cool with that.

    Tim,
I am just wondering why your hazard button is not lit... does it work when you pushed it? It has an LED and supposed to lit.

it is lit, the video just doesn't show it as clear. the lighting and camera exposure maybe, screen brightness taking most of the focus.

but if you look closely around 0:55 in this video you can see it there - https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_c..._Zt9Bkfc&t=55s
