Lets Talk About 01E 1-2 Shift Collars.. JHM vs Updated OEM vs Deburred OLD Collar

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My 1-2 collar locked up on me, and the time has come to address the issue.

I know this has been discussed many times on here, but I don't think there was a thread completely dedicated to comparing all of the options that we have. And besides, more and more people have put a LOT more miles on their cars since those previous posts, so I think it would be worthwhile to see how many miles people have been managing to rack up on these collars. Discuss.

I rebuilt with the JHM kit. Bought the car used and literally one missed shift from me trashed 1st and 2nd gear. Came with a great DVD walk through. Did it all with Harbor Freight tools in about a day. They send new seals also, no problems since. That is besides me putting the input seal on poorly and having to take the whole engine out a second time when it was leaking transmission oil, the fun of learning.

FWIW- When CHAMPION was racing his S4 he found that the "de-burr" method eliminated the issue with the collar...That was a WHILE ago---
There was a write-up in AUDIWORLD, back when he was racing and was a contributor to that forum, that detailed what "fails", what he did and how it worked...
I'm sure the new technology in synchro materials and better manufacturing methods (attention to tolerances and necessary clearances) make the new stuff a better

OEM replacement collar (updated part) is what I would put in, not a cheap replica.

I've got an older thread that I bump like yearly to get new info: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...arket-Synchros

Edit: I spaced it that this is about the shift collar, and not the synchros.

Now that you bring it up, I'm actually curious as to how you put the input shaft seal on anyhow? I assume just lube it up with oil and gently slide over. Also, how fast are you able to shift from 1st and 2nd?

From what I've read, the new syncros and collar are made of a stronger material, so I'll more than likely be going that route anyhow.

That's the plan. Updated collar + all new syncros on all of the gears.

My biggest concern is mainly the collar. From what I've read, the updated collar/syncros are made of a stronger material, so I get the feeling that we be the ideal route to take anyhow. Question is, whether or not the JHM collar will be as well made as OEM updated.

Here’s my non scientific opinion, since I didn’t break out my micrometer. Having my OEM collar in one hand and JHM collar in the other is that the JHM one isn’t as close tolerance as the OEM one. There’s a difference you and see and feel when you engage it with 1st and 2nd gear sets. Which would lead me to believe that the collar with be less likely to seize. Still looks like a quality piece and it’s felt good in the 8k I have on it. Once again not scientific analysis just my professional opinion.
