With auxiliary battery it may be possible to keep it alive for a long time. But I think I have to figure out which is the best way to do that with charging battert etc.... I think the device was drawing 0.5~6A when working and need to calculate Wh.
There's some good info about Doze and App Standby here:

Might be good to test how well that works and if 30 minutes can be tweaked.

This stuff usually don't drain yout battery out unless you don't drive at all over two weeks.
This is pretty good. So does it use capacitor for the 5 minutes? I am not worried as much about the clock of using Android Auto client.

I don't mind the start up time. It's actually quite good for an android device in my opinion. And as some already have mentioned, it starts to boot when you unlock the car. Then it takes a couple of seconds to get into the car, get seated and start the car. The first thing I do then is putting the car in reverse. The backupcamera is displayed (even when the device haven't started yet). I reverse out from my garage, and by the time it returns from the backup camera view when I put it in drive the device has often already booted up or is near booted. So it's not really a problem for me.

But I would welcome an option to have the RSnav always on/sleep mode if it doesn't drain the battery too much. That would be the icing on the cake. Then I could finish long downloads and other stuff without being near my car.

I noticed in the c7 thread a guy used an HDMI adapter to mount in his cigarette lighter port. He then plugged a fire stick into the port and via hot spot was able to view movies. Very cool but at the same time redundant IMO unless I'm wrong. The device runs android. Install kodi just as I have on my S8 phone, run any build you wish still pulling your signal from hotspot and your fine. If the the devices specs are 8 core with decent ram it will blow away the fire stick. Just my thoughts.

^^ i saw that, and yea seemed redundant. but i don't know what i was even looking at, if it's a separate adapter for the 3G mmi guys, where it just does like carplay/android auto or something without the actual unit like this one, just a display adapter?

but yea if it's like this full unit, that's definitely not needed, the unit itself can download w/e the firestick can and more, amazon prime video app, apps for w/e else, kodi, etc.

I think you are mixing up stuff here. That one with HDMI is not running on Android OS. This Android interface does not have HDMI input or output.

The fact that you can't ship by air is not a problem. Yo could send the KIT without coin battery and the Buyer should buy one locally.

Yes but you'd have to open the unit and fit the battery on the board...
Can see quite a few issues arising from this...

I agree, there will be lot of problems with adding this "battery." I do not see the benefit whatsoever. Just a give yourself an extra minute when going somewhere, problem solved!

It shouldn't be hard to add a battery backup without opening the unit. Just insert a 12V UPS in line with the power supply. Or, if it runs on 5V, a USB power pack.

Of course how useful that is depends on the power consumption of the unit. Again, detailed specs would be nice. :)

For me this would be kind of a big deal. I'm hoping it's more like 20s from you unlock the car.

One of the big annoyances with the MMI(+) and stuff like the RNS-510 from VW is that, quite often, one of the first things you want to do when you get in your car is enter the address of the place you're going. And I just can't find anything to do while I wait. Okay, so I've started the engine, fastened my seat belt... 58 seconds to go before I can start slowly dialing in the address... 57... 56... ah screw it, I'll just use my phone. You know?

It boggles the mind that this is what you get in an expensive luxury car. Also, it can shift gears in 8 ms, but the infotainment system has 500 ms of input lag. What's up with that!

To each their own I suppose. I don't expect to change your mind on something fairly trivial in my opinion.

What do you do when you get to work and wait for your computer to boot? I usually just stare into space and zone out for a bit.

Start up time? Lols--1st world problems haha...

My 10.1" just shipped and I can't wait! Mainly interested in using Waze and adding a backup camera, never even considered the boot time. I usually let my car finish the warmup cycle and wait for the rpms to drop before driving anyway.

Do I need to buy an external GPS antenna, or is it included?

Ok, what is going on here? I was out of town for several days and trying to follow up the thread, but it is taking sometime for me.
Just post again or PM me if there is a question that I missed.

    Anyway, a news.

I tested the steering support update, and it works f.....ine (kind of...)

The thing is for 3G MMI or 13+ up cars there are more steering buttons, but MY12 or below has limited number of steering buttons.
The big thing that older audis are missing is 'back button'. So, for MY12 or below, I am figuring out how to support 'back' action..
(or you may consider swapping your steering wheel for more buttons - JK)

The Confirm action(left steering roller push) works well with our UI, but in other apps, it doesn't work. I need to see why. scroll up and down works fine with all apps that supports keyboard navigation.

Apple CarPlay doesn't support the steering wheel control, yet. That is due to the third party device(carplay dongle) and app(phone link, auto link) that is not preventing ACP to access the steering buttons. Negotiating with the third party, but their term for supporting steering wheel in ACP is kinda way too expensive.

For Android Auto, I will check a bypass.

Apparently boot time is a serious issue.

Looking forward to steering wheel updates. Not sure how it will work, but I do have a b8.5 S4 FBSW with the inav button. Don't have a "back" button though.

I meant a button we can assign a 'back' function. I am exploring options for key assignment. The key assignment can be changed later too. it was a matter of capturing signal from the steering and it took like what? 6 months.... jesus. It was long journey. Anyway, since we are capturing all the necessary signals, now we can work on ease.

For booting time, really, there is nothing much I can do now.
In order to save the boot time or supporting hibernation etc, I need to work on the kernel, and MTK and SoC dev are not giving me any kernel sources.
When I go to China in coming January, I am planning to capture whatever the source code available in our factory and will make it open to some developers.

Anyway, Is boot time really concerns anyone? It takes about 45~60 sec normally, and even longer after some app updates, but it starts up when door is unlocked so usually, you wait like 30 secs. I have to say that isn't terrible wait and something you can live with.

I'd love to make it better and exploring possibilities, but it's very hard to access to a closed information source and convince our communist friends to open their minds.
But one by one I am achieving stuff, so let's see.

Personally, I am exploring integration of this device with Raspberry PI and Arduino. I am wondering if I can make Night Vision system - which wouldn't be 'commercial grade' considering the parts available but I am intending to make something at least give you a warning flash when there is something moving with heat signature in dark nights.

For me at least, this would be amazing. Please please, the more you can open up the better. I generally have no reservations at all buying devices I know are "hackable."

I'm buying it anyway, just to be clear, but it would still be amazing. ;)

Anyway, Is boot time really concerns anyone? It takes about 45~60 sec normally, and even longer after some app updates, but it starts up when door is unlocked so usually, you wait like 30 secs. I have to say that isn't terrible wait and something you can live with.
Boot time does concern me, but it's not a dealbreaker.

Personally I'd want to experiment a bit. The car already has a big battery, so I could see myself hooking the Android unit directly to that, via a 12V cutoff relay and a 5V (?) regulator, and using the normal MMI power supply as a signal to put the unit in low-power mode when it would otherwise switch off completely.

But that all depends on hackability: what I can do with the USB ports, if it requires root access on the device, etc. If it isn't feasible, a 30 second wait isn't the end of the world, considering all the other benefits of Android over the MMI.

    Fu*k DHL Hong Kong!

Five of you who received the tracking number from me is wondering why the tracking isn't going further.
I have to blame DHL Hong Kong. This f*cker keeps 5 items in their warehouse and not loading into DHL flights.
The reason being is there are already too may item delayed about a week, so they are saying they would process the five shipments when it becomes our pallette's turn. .
I asked the fu*ker then return the item to the factory so that I can at least refund people! But they say 'nay' to that either, because it's practically impossible for them to dismantle a pallette of shipment now. So anything shipped from Hong Kong by DHL is fu*ked up really.

Why then did I choose DHL HK? because they were offering the best rate that I am charging now for my site.
I can opt for DHL Shenzhen and they are processing stuff faster, but then again I have to charge 'the prices what you see in DHL.com from Shenzhen to your city'.(over $100 US easily).

People are already complaining about the shipping fees, so how could I increase further?

It's a deadlock for me. Maybe I terminate the business relationship with DHL and work with EMS(Postal Service) for the standard delivery of 15~21 days.
Nevertheless, EMS doesn't want to ship the huge box of 10.1" for A4, S4.

Shipping is really a headache for me... ah...

Out of the blue, I got a message that DHL was sending my unit. I got it Sunday, so it actually got to me pretty fast all things considered. still haven't gotten it installed, but I will be shortly.

So can I use the micro SSD slot for music or would I be able to tether the device to my phone as a hotspot to stream music?

    - Steering wheel support is almost done. Just changing assigned keys(make 'confirm' action work) and retrofitting our apps for better navigation

So can I use the micro SSD slot for music or would I be able to tether the device to my phone as a hotspot to stream music?
Yes, you can use SD slot for music, and tethering and streaming also works well.

Nope. USB2.0 HS 480mbps is the maximum. The entire platform was built on USB 2.0 and I think SoC builder has no idea when they would implement usb 3.1.

What is it? Is the year 2000 now?

Mine move but I don't have the camera installed yet. I can't get the stock handle off. It is a setting in the Realsun settings, I think.

    Hi guys
I still await information about my order from DHL.
On the DHL website, they only give this information:

Shipment information received HONG KONG - HONG KONG 13:36

    I'm worried

Mine work well enough, but the blue in the middle is so dark it impairs my view, so I turned them off.

Is anyone else having problems getting music to play directly from the device itself? I can play music from my phone, and Apple Music works well enough. I was hoping to get Amazon Music working on the RSNav, but nothing will play. I'm having the same problem with Google Play Music.

It seems BT music works but native music play isn't working... interesting. Go and run Volume Adjust APK and play with the sliders.

    Call you local DHL.
They will say DHL does not received the item in their 'service centre'.
Tell him you want 'special investigation team' to track the parcel.
If the DHL rep says he's 100% sure DHL doesn't received item, ignore and ask again 'So I want a proof in writing from DHL stating it's not with DHL. So ask your special investigators in Hong Kong to confirm that'. Repeat this as many as the CS agent would give up talking to you.

A day later, 'Magically' the item will be processed and arrive in your home within 3~5 days.

I saw those special investigators are practicing black magic recently.

    Great Job DHL.
