    My first AR

Hey all. Wanted to introduce myself, share my new to me AR, and get some pointers. Not new to Audi and love to wrench. I’ve been doing lots of research, but still wanted advice. Tell me to search all you want, but photobucket and AZ search on my phone blow.

    My B8 S4

2003 6MT 2.7T AR with 165,000 miles. Just got it yesterday and have some work to do. Air ride seems solid and clutch/tranny seems alright so that’s a plus there.

Passenger side oil leak that smells awful, but both valve cover gaskets have been done within about 20,000 miles. Passenger rear camshaft seal?

Passenger front door mechanism won’t shut all the way unless pressed closed. When shut or “slammed” it kinda bounces back. Ideas?

Every cup holder is broken. After market options or is this a junkyard/classifieds find? Same with passenger rear ashtray.

Need rear hatch struts. What’s the best place to find a set?

And can someone inform me about the difference between APB and BEL exhausts manifolds and turbos? I read the BEL is different and not as desirable for modifications but that the 6MT is different and may have the old/S4 style turbos and manifolds.

Thanks in advance and so stoked to finally have a 6MT AR!

Scanned the car this weekend. Had a handful of misfire codes, hvac codes, and door lock codes.

Curious if all the door latches are bad or if my passenger one which I know is failing could cause the system to be upset?

    Welcome,

Oil leak is likely camshaft tensioner gasket, half moon, or cam plug or all three. These cars love to figure out ways to leak oil. Make sure PCV system is functioning well.

The door latch microswitches are done as well as the latches are likely worn out. People have changed the microswitches and pulled the latches apart to relube. I had a bad driverside one, bought one from a guy on Facebook group named Jordan that has a business for a good price. Put it in and zero issues since.

    Cupholders search classifieds and junkyards.

I just bought two hatch struts from Europaparts and they are awesome, lifts the hatch on their own and that hatch is a heavy SOB! Highly recommend Europaparts as well.

6mt allroads have the older style exhaust flange so there are downpipe options.

    Hope this helps and enjoy!

Man, that seems like a lot of weight for out roof rails. Probably like 400lb with one person in it?

Most roof ratings are based on the fact that the car will be driving and with the bouncing and also wind resistance the actual load is a lot more than just the weight of the item, as in lots of a safety window.

Thule steel square cross bars are only rated for about 165lbs I think, the aero bars are the same or similar from Thule.. yet my parents have the volvo branded thule bars and magically they hold 220 or something like that.

Like towing capacities a lot of these figures are pulled out of thin air with insane margins of error.

I've (not advising this) carried about 3 times loads of pressure treated 4x4s that exceeded 300lbs on my allroad, I mistakenly did the math using the weight of kiln dried stuff whooops... That was driving and the factory rails had no issues at all no flex or signs of other movement.. my cross bars were flexing a bit though.

Point being I don't see it being a problem at all, plus the ladder on a roof top tent like that can take some of the weight off the vehicle itself.
    80 rabbit pickup, 98 TJ 4bt cummins, 00 180TTQ 6spd, 02 Freelander, 03 Allroad 2.7t 6spd swap now with K04s, 06 A3 2.0T w/GT3071R (2012 JSW TDI and 2015 GSW TDI now in TDI purgatory )

    Definitely didn’t sell the house.

chris86vw is right. Static weight is 450lbs with two of us and crap while the tent itself is 130lbs. The Thule cross bars I have are rated to 165lbs. Drove it on the freeway today and no problems. It’s definitely there, though.

Inorite? It’s definitely draining the money little by little. I have an ever growing pile of parts accumulating in the garage.

So some things have happened and I’m gonna start putting stuff on here because I haven’t in a while.

I found a pig and subsequently sold my house...

    IMG_6950.jpg

I bought a new house with space for dreams

    59357748210__1F55C7EE-B345-4005-8BF1-E3AFDE640B1E.jpg

Threw some big city boggers on Dana

    IMG_1356.JPG
    IMG_1358.JPG

Did some maintenance and replaced both front axles on the Allroad. They were a pain to install until I realized I wasn’t at full lock with the steering wheel

    IMG_1536.JPG
    59625880780__26BEF4B3-B04D-47B1-834B-ADE3DC73255E.jpg

And today I realized I’d fallen victim to a throttle body boot failure. Thanks to Audizine I already had one! I could tell something wasn’t right, but was only throwing a soft code and didn’t think to scan for some reason.

    IMG_1708.JPG

    I’m out.

My suggestion: Always watch the classifieds here for "Part-out" offerings. A number of allroads have passed through. That's where I scored two rear-armrest ashtrays for my son's S6.

Nice updates, love the garage space! that was my goal before purchasing my last house! You didn't happen to buy that Allroad at a dealership in Puyallup, WA did you? just curious, it was one of the one i was going to look at i believe before i bought mine. Love your S4 as well.

    Thank you!

I’ve done a handful of other things like heater core, rear diff mount, and a cup holder! Nothing too crazy yet...

Yes sir I did buy it in Puyallup. They were few and far between, now there’s like 5 on Craigslist alone in the PNW with manual transmissions. Did you end up with a nice one yourself?

I thought so. I was scheduled to go see it and they told me it was sold. I did end up with a nice one, 2.7 6 speed as well, did a little side trip to San Francisco for it but all in the fun! By the way, i love your lift, which brand is that if you don't mind me asking?

Nice! The lift is by Twin Busch. I did a lot of researching for my needs and ended up going with the S3-10E.

Today was another day for long overdue maintenance. I’m embarrassed at the state of these plugs, but damn does she run nice now.

Points!? We don’t need no stinkin’ points!

I also replaced the vacuum line to my fuel pressure regulator. It was pretty much rotted in half where the bend is in the picture.

I was experiencing some decent vibration under load and was hoping the plugs would help. They definitely did, but I’m still experiencing some vibrations under load. It feels like it’s coming from the tranny, but it’s hard to say. She is a 6spd. Maybe it’s my drive shaft? Maybe it’s my, most likely fried at 176,000 miles, engine and tranny mounts? Anyone have any guidance, I’d much appreciate it.

I’m stoked for you! Shifting gears in the Allroad is my favorite, no one expects it!
Did you go with an Allroad transmission or S4 with the A6 rear diff?

Changed my fuel filter today after chasing down new crush washers from Audi yesterday. She runs like a champion now. Vibration and hesitation is gone! So stoked! I guess the engine was just really struggling for fuel.

This is what I shook out of the fuel filter. There were legit pebbles in here. I can’t believe how neglected this car has been. It’s amazing it even ran!

Tonight I changed all the gear oil. I didn’t notice any debris really, but I think it’s seen better days...I love Audi, but this stuff is beyond it’s “life”.

Out with the old. There is a bit of an amber hue to it when it’s flowing.

    IMG_1787.jpg

    In with the new

    IMG_1788.jpg

If anyone is curious, it’s about 2.5L for the transmission and diff and about 1.2L for the rear diff. Give or take some spilled and left in the exchange pump.

Nice work man. What size tires and spacers? How is the AR gearing suited to the diameter?

235/70/16 with a 20mm spacer. I find the gearing to actually work well. It’s got short gears which helps lug the wheel and tire combo around, but she still accelerates well. I can cruise in 5th going 35 mph all day getting about 20 mpg.

After my recent experience with over boosting and a torn throttle body I thought it was about time for a boost gauge. I got a killer deal on this P3 Gauge as it was on sale and posted for an RS6, I think it may have been in error because all the C5’s are the same you just select which engine when configuring it. Anyway, I got the analog boost sensor, and one for my B8 S4, which is great. Running the line for the Allroad was way easier than for my S4.

    IMG_1854.JPG

I’m seeing 9.6 psi as max boost and holding right around 7-7.5 psi. I’m assuming this is stock. I was really hoping for a hidden tune because of some of the other goodies on the car, but I’m stock. Womp.

If anyone makes it this far, is there still a way to get a tune for these cars? I’m also looking to code out the SAI once I do all the head gaskets and rebuild the spider hose assembly.

When you changed the gear oil, is it same as transmission fluid? Did you take down the trans pan to replace filter and gasket?

No. I have a manual transmission. Only automatics have a filter to be changed.

I also am experiencing some vibration from time to time, not constant so, but you just gave me the idea to go ahead and replace the fuel filter anyways, its not like its a big maintenance and price and will be good either way!

That right there is some good logic. Bam!

Welcome to the living nightmare. Enjoy the getting up in the morning setting on the bump stops. I love these cars. But I also hate them. I have an 01. I just swapped out to coils. After setting for 6 months on the bump stops. Drove it 40 miles and now something else is wrong.

I bought mine like 2 years ago sitting on its face up front from bad bags, replaced those, rebuilt the compressor and it's worked ever since, only droops in subfreezing temps

It's to the point where all the problems just run together in a spider web of disappointment and mush.

I’ve had her for a couple years. Only needed a couple things to keep her going. I do have leaky front bags, but it takes 2 days to hit the tire, so it’s not on my priority list. In the future. I have rebuilt the pump, though.
