Anyone else have this problem...? I need to find a good storage solution for my wheels. Ideas?

We can all agree the ugly ones are going My wife made it very clear and I’ve had them for about 12 years now, hahaha.

I ended up getting some wall mounted tire racks. I’d like to keep an extra set of wheels for each car we have. I’m trying to get a lot of stuff up off the ground. These should help.

So I never met my goal for the driveshaft carrier bearing from JXB. Oh well. My wife had an emergency c-section and my son was born on the 22nd so shit got prioritized.

I did, however, do a thing today! I got a new toy and I decided to get fancy. I’m really happy with the results. I used this on my new to me head from audis4parts. After an hour and a half of cleaning, just as a time experiment really, 60 degrees Celsius of 5% Masters Stages Clean 2020, and a little dental picking the valve guides I’m content.

    IMG_3048.jpg

Before and then right before I started the cleaner. Head was relatively clean appearing minus some typical sludge and carbon build up around the valves.

Thanks! I have more to do, but this was a successful first run. Carbon kinda just wiped off after an hour. Just needed the thick stuff dislodged a bit.

I’m gonna clean all the caps and valve train next.

Nice. Will it fit the intake manifold of a V6 or inline 4?

I’m not entirely sure. The tank measures 20”x12”x8”, but it’s really about 6” deep with the fill line and lid on. My head prevented the lid from closing fully so I put little rubber stopper on the studs to prevent rubbing.

That's a good size tank on yours...I was looking at one of these too, but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I have a 2bbl carb on my boat that needs a good dunk, but in winter storage now, so put that project off for a bit!

Congrats on the baby! Hope everyone is doing well...next one for me will belong to my son and his new wife!

    Thank you! And congratulations yourself!

I got the largest one I could find within reason, specifically for my heads. I’ll put whatever else I can fit in it while I’m cleaning things up.

We have success. I feel like Dr. Frankenstein, almost. Anyway it’s been a long time coming. Damaged head is off, not without a fight. The head bolt didn’t want to come out of the head enough because of the gnarled journal. Eventually I got it.
Time is harder and harder to come by. Oof. Anyway. Time to clean and reassemble.

Ultrasonic cleaner again. My OE head shows the difference better than the used one I got for my replacement. I did the used head before I pulled the OE heads off my block as a test run.

All of the staining came right out. I am very impressed with this thing.

My secondary water pump lines. Anyone know a decent source for the lines? I have a new pump already. I’d like to retain it, but not pay the $225 on FCP. IMG_3290.jpg

What’s better than an Allroad with a manual transmission? Two 01Es!

Good deal off Craigslist. 80,000 less miles than mine and now I can feel more confident taking my original one apart.

Honestly, no. It was pissing rain and I had the family with me. I should have, but the baby was crying and...
After I got home I made sure it goes into gear. It didn’t come with any shift linkage so it took me a minute to realize it was in gear with just my hand. Eventually I popped it out of gear and all seems well.

Just making sure cause I don't want to see you get burned.

Does it physically go into the 7 gear locations?

If you don’t know, now you do. These are amazing for prepping mating surfaces. Really hard to do any damage. They also work great for stickers and decal removal.

    IMG_3545.jpg
Noticed the coolant crossover connection on the driver’s head has some corrosion, almost pitting. This was a bear to clear off. Had to use a metal blade and shave off years of build up. Almost ready for assembly. Hopefully no leaks there.

Right Passenger’s head is done. Intake keepers can suck it. There’s so little room in the middle valve.

Looking really good...although you'll never see this loveliness once it's all installed, you'll have that warm and fuzzy feeling inside knowing that you were able to get this done yourself! I'm hoping to never need to do this on my RS6 heads and the V8, much less others with the V10...

It’s definitely a labor of love. It’s some good down time for me. I was a weekend warrior for about 20 years rushing through jobs on weekends so I could be to work Monday. Now being able to take my time and get more involved, it’s fun.

Definitely rewarding when it’s all done.

    IMG_3576.jpg

Now I can reinstall the cams and make sure they’re good to go. I wanna run the cams that came with the “new to me head”, but I’ll need to verify timing. A big part of me suspects it was not at TDC when removed.

Timing can be tricky...at least on the RS6, and I would imagine so to with the V6...take careful note if you are supposed to have different lengths for your chains on each side...the passenger bank should be easy, but the driver's side may be tougher as there is not a "rest" point in the lift for full slack on all of the valves. You'll figure it out for sure if you've gone this far! Again, the RS6 may have it's own quirks that the 2.7 doesn't...so I may be full of BS right now...

Thank you! You are correct. I’ve been doing my research over the years to vaguely familiarize myself with things like this. I’ve got lots of references saved, manuals, and take lots of pictures. I’ve learned my lesson. Nothing like the special tools blues or playing the o-ring game, haha.

I’d love to be educated. Thanks in advance. I’ll also be doing some light reading and adding more things to the parts list in the mean time.

Is it just me or are the pictures broken? I’m on mobile and don’t have a PC and sometimes it’s the mobile app not the link.

Does anyone have experience cleaning this area? Is that hardline something I can service while keeping the crank and pistons in? I’m assuming that comes off the oil pump or is part of the lubrication system and if it’s like most the rest the engine, I’d like to try to clean it.

Pictures work on my PC, so likely it's your mobile app ... does this pic show up for you in post #5 from the link I listed ?
The die grinder in the pic makes me believe this is not a straight forward removal ...

Negatory, but I can see your picture. And thank you! That’s exactly what I’m working with. And yeah, why the grinder I wonder? Maybe they were cleaning up the casting.

Clearly that oil hardline can come out. Now to find how. I only plan on a top end refresh, so I’m not going to go too bonkers if it’s a total pain.

Thanks! I had planned on getting a lot more accomplished, but babies are unpredictable and I found myself actually quite torn. I went back to work this week so working 4 10’s and I am on call 50% of the time after work so things will slow again.

I’m at the point now where I need to make substantial purchases like flywheel and clutch combo and I need to decide if I’m going to replace the CHRAs in my turbos or if I’m gonna go OE KO3s from FCP. I’m not making this thing fast, I’d just like it fun and reliable as I can make it.

I’m thinking TTV flywheel with B7 RS4 clutch as I need a new flywheel since my dual mass is shot and I don’t want to go OE dual mass or true lightweight. Probably overkill, but that clutch is so dang inexpensive and easily sourced. I’ll never exceed its limits and I like the TTV semi-lite, if you will.

Anyone have $0.02 on my turbo idea?

Also, anyone ever try disassembling a cam chain tensioner and cleaning it out? I have an extra that came with the head from Phil and was thinking about playing around with it. I read a post a member made a few years back saying he was a tech and would clean them in an ultrasonic cleaner and they were good as new. I imagine they get deposits in them and gunked up, but mechanically are sound. My understanding is the CCT rarely fails it’s the shoes. I have replacement shoes.
