FWIW on the cam cap bolts, 4.5 years and 40k miles ago, I replaced an exhaust cam and a couple hydro lifters when one of the lobes had a mutual eating contest with it's lifter. I reused all the cam cap bolts. No issues. My wife still daily drives the A6.

Question for you Jay regarding bushings: how do I know which is which? I see them marked with F for front, but both sets of bushings look the same. Will the re-worked bushing be different colors or anything?

The street bushings will be softer. You should be able to tell by squeezing them. The revised units will be marked street and track in the mold (costs an extra $500 on the mold to do this, all for you guys! :P). Just finishing up the design now actually...

    My first AR

Had some time this weekend to start in on the underside of things. I have a feeling this will be indicative of my future...exhaust clamps showered me with rust and all 4 snapped clean off. The last one even rounded on me really nicely, so that was fun. An hour later and I had 4 nuts off. I let some PB Blaster soak and moved on to other things for a bit.
    IMG_2576.jpg

I have Hotchkis sways front and rear. When I removed the front, I noticed one of the zirk fittings for the mount is gone/broke off Anyone had to replace these? It almost looks like they’re tearing out and the hole is elongated now.

If it helps anyone in the future, Hotchkis told me they have the parts, they just don’t advertise online. Call them.

Looks like you or a PO dragged it up on a curb stop or something similar...you can buy those fittings at any auto parts store and may even be able to get an oversized one if you need to drill it out larger if you want to try it before replacing the bracket.

Exhaust bolts, that's a whole other story...at least it gives you a good reason to put fresh clamps on which should eliminate this issue for many years to come.

My first A6 was a NY State car...had 200k on it and every nut, bolt, stud, etc. was a bastard! Spent a lot of time and $$ getting off and replacing between various projects. Now my RS6 was pretty much always garage kept, only has 105k on it, and has been a dream to work on...I did have one stuck bolt on the front drive shaft coupler shield that I had to drill out, but it was mainly because I used an undersized torx first and f'd up the threads. Once those are bunged, it's a lost cause.

Personal preference, but on my S6, I went back to a stock bar up front and only run the Hotchkiss rear to reduce understeer.
Wife's A6 still has both Hotchkiss, but the previous owner cleaned the zirk's off for us. I've never "serviced" the front bar, and it doesn't make any noise, so...

On the exhaust, this last round of remove-install on the S6, I ditched the clamps and went to V-bands.

V-bands are a good idea...thinking the same with mine...with my Miltek turbo back, they are all slip joints and were a muthertrucker to get apart, even after only about 6 months on the car. I have a great exhaust shop that can do this for me once mine is back on the road from the engine pull...

I have communicated with you on your site but thanks for chiming in, i have yet to pull the trigger on this, work and Mini focused at this time, nothing like cleaning emulsified oil out of a coolant system thanks to failed oil cooler! Once that i completed, definitely pulling the trigger on 2 of those for both C5!

That is good to know. I purchased my Allroad from a fellow enthusiast in California and he had install Hotchkis front and rear on the car, but i swear i feel that the understeer is really bad on strong continuous corners or qucik throws, i scared myself a couple of times with the Allroad. I went back home and try to adjust the coilovers (the car is on coils not stock suspension for now) and i still felt like it didn't solve much. i might try to go back to a stock front and see.

That was my guess, as well. I definitely didn’t hit a curb, but somebody has. They are shearing out toward the firewall.

I suspected the exhaust clamps would be a pain, but the car has always been a PNW car and other things haven’t been too terrible. I’ve rebuilt the compressor, changed some rear diff mounts, fuel filter, etc. I honestly think my exhaust is OE and that’s why.

I’ve also got a VW Alltrack and a B8 S4. Those are a dream to work on.

I wish I had the OE bars to give this a shot. That’ll be a ways down on the priority list for me, though.

Same! I’m not making any promises of when, though. Haha. Jay is sending me out the new revised bushings soon and I’ll hopefully get it in before the year is over. My goal, but who knows what else will get thrown my way this year. Between working in healthcare and Covid, these damn fires, and having a baby coming in 3 months, I’m about tapped out!

You are a busy man that's for sure, and working in the healthcare industry is work especially this year i am sure. I am still struggling with the mini right now, took way more off that i thought i would, down to the s/c to access the water pump so i can clean the cooling system going through the block etc, the whole front end of the car is off again since i did a major service on it 6K ago... what a pain lol. It's a love/hate relationship with the cars!

Good luck to you and your family on getting ready for the new arrival!

Doing a little work today and I was not prepared for the ECU cage. Wtf!? I’ve never heard of such a thing. When I pulled a B5 S4 2.7 I don’t remember a damn cage. Ugh! Time to destroy some stuff!

Found this floating around in the cowl area attached to the positive battery cable. I believe it’s the air quality sensor. Can someone fill me in on how this is attached and/or confirm that 4B0907659A is the part number? Thanks!

Yeah, supposed to be attached to the air filter box with a little tab...even the one on my RS6 (which is in great shape) is broken...just zip tie it to something near the air box and it will be fine.

When you say air box, do you mean cabin air or intake air?

I’m also getting a soft fault code for this that I’ve ignored and cleared a bunch. Has anyone replaced this sensor and where’d you source it from? ECS is $163...

Sorry, cabin air filter....you'll probably find a little broken flat tab that this should attach to right on the side of the filter housing.

I drained the coolant from the block today and oh boy was it gritty. Lots of sand like stuff came out after I shoved a big pick way up in there. If anyone is on the fence, I’d highly recommend doing this. Especially if your heater core has ever clogged up.

Finally got her out, no thanks to my first time use engine hoist from Harbor Freight (FYI, the engine hits the compression lever and damages it mid way through using it.) Womp.

Now to figure out how to get that thing off an engine hoist that doesn’t go up any longer. Hmmmm.

Bummer about the hoist...looks like you were trying to get away with the shortest boom extension to save on space. Doesn't sound like the hoist's fault since the engine whacked the lift cylinder...good thing that Harbor Freight should sell a replacement cylinder for it. Looks like plenty of tires there that you can use to drop the engine on to long enough to swap out the lift cylinder and pull your boom out one notch to avoid from happening again. Don't worry about lift strength with the boom out a little, just don't have it all the way out at the end. Maybe also try to shorten your lift chains a bit...a couple of links here and there will make a big difference with your lifting angles.

Keep it up...this will be a small hurdle...

Here's my RS6 that's out now...this thing is a beast with the Tip hanging off of it! (Not going back in with the Tip...hint hint...)

Also, with the boom out a little further, you should be able to get some jack stands under the motor mounts to set her down on...

I was fighting the hoist the whole time. With my Allroad being immobile on my mid-rise lift it was hard to get the lift low enough, if you go too low it doesn’t want to come back up without a little running start, I learned this the hard way once, and the hoist high enough. The boom kept running into the hood or I’d run out of travel. I definitely need to shorten my chains, but I’ll have the modify the load leveler. I think that was killing my travel. I also think maybe running the hydraulic cylinder out so far may have popped a seal. Regardless, it’s out, I will game plan for install better now that I know what I’m working with, and now I get to clean clean clean!
I’m pretty sure HF sells a replacement ram/hydraulic unit. I’ll set everything down on blocks, replace the cylinder, and then lift her back up so I can remove the trans and place on an engine stand.

I got things safely reworked. Hoist is better, jack stands under the unit, and all systems are go. The Dismantling of 2020 starts. My HF hoist was just filled with air and not enough oil. I finally resorted to reading the instructions and had to bleed the hydraulic system. Much better. All is well. I still love/hate you Harbor Freight, like a step child or diarrhea.

Got the transmission off. Yeow! It all went very smoothly with no stubborn bolts.

Clutch doesn’t look too bad honestly. I think it was replaced at some point.

    IMG_2873.jpg

Flywheel I think is shot. Good amount of radial play and not so springy. Also looks pretty hot.

And while I’m in there...I think my rear main was leaking...Weird! This thing doesn’t leak...

Thanks man! I followed both of your threads on the Allroad and B8 S4. I also have both those Audis. I feel like a lot of us enthusiasts are getting B5 or C5 chassis cars as projects and daily a B8.

    Yeah lol.

I wanted something newer that was reliable, but it just so happens I've hit every single major maintenance item on my B8 in the last year I've owned it. Great platform but its expensive to mod.

I must be lucky or naive. I’ve had my B8 for almost 7 years at 71,000 miles and I’ve only changed the oil, filters, and plugs. (Knock on wood) Mods are expensive. I’ve fought getting a tune for a long time, but with the new price cuts...
Good news is, now that the B8 is solid you can work on getting that supercharger fitted to the Allroad (:

This is what I shook out of the fuel filter. There were legit pebbles in here. I can’t believe how neglected this car has been. It’s amazing it even ran!

My curiosity is getting the best of me. Have any of you guys ever noticed the amount of rust I’ve got on my pressure plate, clutch, flywheel, and input shaft? I’m curious if maybe that was contributing to my clutch engagement “thud”. I think my flywheel was definitely part of that, but I can’t figure out why the rust!

That looks pretty normal. I wouldn't think too much on it.

Anyone else have this problem...? I need to find a good storage solution for my wheels. Ideas?
