When you finally get it running make sure to prelube not by cranking but by sending oil under pressure through the oil sender port. I didn't do this the first time and I noticed I have grooves in my new cylinder head bearings; it's not bad, but it could have been avoided.
Welp its probably too late for that lol. Also I believe quench pad removal is going to be the way to go. Busted out ye ol dremel to see what can be done and its not cleaning up that bad. Im interested in more info on that priming technique. Also I got some rings off the Mahle p/n you had recommended in a different thread since they are on backorder at ECS. Summit Racing for the win! I really really really am hoping this head will clean up since everything I have seen thats used looks a bit rough

I've never primed any of my engines like that and haven't had issues. I do use assembly lube rather liberally though.

What gap did you decide to run? Also just a light pass on both sides of the ring? My last two sets of Mahles I did not deburr. I think Adam and I gapped the last set to .020 and .018 I think.

For now just a k03 with the JHM tune but until I get some time to fab I'll probably slap on an EFR. I've been wanting to for a long, long time. IMO it's really not worth it to just get a k04-r and be done with it. Sure, it's peppy but if you're going to drop 1.5-2k for a turbo might as well just go bigger.

Or go with the K04-R, enjoy your peppy ride until you get your BT, then sell the K04-R to recover some costs.

    Small update:

Third and final block should be making its way back from the machine shop Friday. New rings came in the mail today to go along with a bunch of little odds and ends from ECS (bearings, gaskets, bolts, etc). Going to finish cylinder head repair tomorrow and have maybe a thousandth or two of an inch taken off for good measure on Friday when I snag the block back... Dont worry, clearances will definitely be measured this time... From there all components are going up to the shop and they will be doing the full assembly of the engine and car for me due to some time constraints (I like to take on too many projects at once, its a great bad habit). While its up there its getting trans and diff fluid changed and a small exhaust rattle fixed. Shooting to get them all the components this weekend and he said turn around time should be about a week.

A final light at the end of the tunnel is slowly appearing after months of daily driving a shitbox. I am confident this one will run.

I am confident as well. It's all about taking all the variables away in a build that requires tight tolerances.

At the end of this summer you could convince me to change turbos and buy my EFR 6758. Iíd gladly jump to something I havenít yet tried.

A K04 isnít a small upgrade so I canít say I really agree with you. It will never be a truly fast car at the drag strip but a quick spooling car thatís fun to drive on the street that can do 13.5 or 13 flat when tuned right with every bolt on has its benefits.

I could have gone big turbo when I put in my K04 but the K04 suits my needs and driving style plenty.

Just another way to look at it.

So the oiling ring is a 3 piece design on these rings. Are these definitely the ones you are running? MKV GTI is a confirmed fit for them, so I am sure it will all be fine but just want to be sure.

Hey thanks! Does that award come with compensation for the thousands of dollars Ive lost? lol! Anyways I appreciate the kind words. Ill be honest, I was very veryyyyy close to saying fuckit and just buying a B8 S4 and being done with this cursed car. All in all this should be the cheaper option, just keep your fingers crossed everything goes well this time.

I am looking for a boat anchor? Any of these blocks capable of being this for me.... (donít hate mate you gotta break shit to learn right!)

I canít get into another audipit. 2 trucks, 1 car is enough. A block for a table would be nice weld connecting rods w Pistons 1 on each corner then put a sheet of glass on top. But maybe when I finish lifting, engine/trans swapping, gutting upgrades from truck 1 to truck 2 and completing a bit of a 1 off suspension upgrade (full flex 8-11Ē at shock) on my Sierra with some big old prerunner shocks (king, F-O-A, FOX), Iíll pick up a block to do a table build! It will need some carbon though to lighten it up!

Block is back. Dropped the head off, many leaking valves but thinking I just got shit on the seats from grinding the quench pads before the cams were out (couple spots were close and I needed to open/close things to check shit) hopefully he takes it apart and nothings bent and just needs cleaned or even seats cleaned up. He (machine shop) said he should get to it Monday for me.

Head is back. Seats just had a bunch of crap on em from grinding the damage out. He took .00025 off to have a nice fresh surface on it. Whole engine is back to the shop as of Wednesday and I should have it back in about a week, which would hopefully be just in time to do a shake down and clean it up to take it to cars and coffee at ECS this Saturday. Hopefully everything works out, getting excited again..
