What is your favorite motor oil?

So this isn't a thread about who makes better oil. I know its pretty much the same. I am interested to hear what you use in your audi and why you like it. On most of my cars I always buy whatever was cheapest weather it be a case at costco or a deal I get on amazon. Only exception being a few cars I previously owned that I really cared about. I put Mobil 1 or royal purple in those. I am heavily swaying towards Liqui Molly for the A4 although I'm sure Mobil 1 would work fine

I use Liqui Moly on the Touareg and Motul on the Audi... why? Because the Touareg takes more oil and Liqui Moly is cheaper.

Not really, Mobil 1 and royal purple are considered high quality oils that alot of people tend to use in their american sports cars. I didnt ask who makes the best oil. I asked what is your favorite oil and why? Alot of oil selection is personal preference and brand loyalty plus some oils work better than others in specific applications.

Ok I see what you're saying now.

I'm new to Audi's and I see many people using Liqui Moly and Motul in their cars. Maybe it works better, but I don't know for sure first hand.

In my Camaro, the oil cap says to use Mobil 1, but the Chevy dealership uses Penzoil Synth and I don't notice the difference between the two brands, except Penzoil is cheaper.

I use whatever I find that is cheapest, synthetic and is 502 vw spec.

Last time I used Castrol stuff and it was about 28 bucks. If I recall.

Some oil experiences with some of the vehicles I've owned:
    1. Chrysler Dodge minivan, 330,000 miles - Mobil 1 for its life - no engine problem. OCI - 10 to 12K miles
    2. Lexus RX300, 310,000 miles - Amsoil Signature series, no engine problems. OCI - 10K miles
    3. Jaguar XJ6 120,000 miles - Mobil 1 15W50, no engine problems. OCI - yearly (~4-5K/yr)
    4. 2008 Audi A4 MT, 95,000 miles - Amsoil 5W-40 European formula, no problems, runs strong. OCI - 7K miles
    5. Honda CB750, 98,000 miles - Mobil 1, no engine problems. OCI - 3K miles
    6. BMW R1200RT, 72,000 miles - Amsoil 20W-50, runs like new. OCI - 5K miles
    7. 1980 Kubota 3 cyl diesel tractor, 1500 hr - Rotella T6 15W-40 to 2005, Amsoil 15W-40 thereafter, runs like new. OCI - 100hr
    8. All other lawn and garden equip. runs on Amsoil 10W-30 with annual oil change - never an engine problem.

I know this is much more info than you asked for but will share anyway.
I no longer own the minivan, Lexus, or CB750. While I use Amsoil now and Mobil 1 in the past I seriously doubt there are any significant or noteworthy differences between the premium synthetic motor oils on the market today. I used to do engine oil analysis at Blackstone Labs but they were always unremarkable for all indications. I have EOA on all vehicles and Kubota (not on yard equip.) to be used as a baseline should I ever need them. I still do EOA on the piston powered aircraft I own as these are engine critical applications but that is outside the purview of this discussion.

Usually M1 0w40 since its $24 a jug at Walmart. On top of that 2-3 times a year theres always a $12/jug rebate. If I had more cash to burn, I'd probably try Motul or Liqui Moly.

Rotella T6 in my b6 and b7. I put castrol in the better half's Q5 the first change, then Motul 8100 Xcess the second since its still under CPO warranty and I don't want to possibly void the warranty by not using a VW501 oil like Rotella. The Q5 seems to run a bit smoother with the Motul than with the castrol but its not my daily so honestly I pay little attention to it...

I love Rotella T6 because of the price and because it does a great job and has a good detergent/additive package.

Mobil 1 0w40, its porsche rated (which is hard to get apparently). 23 bucks at walmart and does well in blackstone lab testing. Great stuff and run a lot of promos plus they support Motorsports quite a bit.

For some reason I thought Mobil 1 was the same price as Liqui Molly but I found it for $22 in amazon prime which is $13 cheaper than the Liqui Molly. I dont mind paying extra for stuff but its looking like Mobil 1 is gonna be it for me

Good choice, have been running it for a long time and I beat on my car to say the least. Half a dozen or more autocrosses and a couple track days a year, haven't had any issues related to coking or oil pressure yet.

Just for grins I looked up Liqui Moly (listed #159 - 5W40 Liqui Moly Leichtlauf High Tech Oil, 69,580 psi) and several other oils on the site (link listed below) where the high temperature high shear strength is measured and reported. The HTHS strength is considered one of the best measures of wear protection. Liqui Moly does not perform particularly well. In fact it's very mediocre, in the modest wear protection category. 0W40 Mobil 1 “FS” European Car Formula is one of the highest at 127,200 psi (listed #3). Check the site out and let us know your thoughts on this.

Once I got to the results it was a very interesting read. Neither Motul or liqui molly performed well where stuff like Napa branded oil performed very well. I actually ordered the Mobil 1 FS european Formula 0w-40 off amazon a few hours ago

Royal purple is highly suggested for cleaning only. It breaks down super quickly in turbo applications. I noticed oil pressure drops while using royal purple around the 4000 km mark. They claim it's long lasting yet when I emptied it it came out extremely thin and very discoloured. I suggest only using this as a cleaner as that's really all I've found it to be useful for. Just based on my own experience and the knowledge I got after running 1 jug of it.

Same here. Been running T6 for a few years with no issues. Always available at my local Wal-Mart and at a good price for the 5 L jug.

Honestly I'm surprised M1 0w40 is so popular. I thought most people considered T6 to be the de facto standard on this car

Yes. A bit long but worth the effort. Certainly better than the "my engine sounds better on Liqui Moly" opinions occasionally expressed on the forum.

I'm too lazy to look it up but is there any info on t6, as in results by Blackstone or anything. I find it hard to believe it comes close to mobil 1 euro spec. Sure if you are just doing some pulls everyonce in a while, maybe no problem. But sustained high oil temperatures in track environments or really hot days, i wouldn't think so.

I use T6 currently in the B7 and the Duramax. Will likely use it in the a7 too now that the prepaid services are gone.

Sure if you are just doing some pulls everyonce in a while, maybe no problem. But sustained high oil temperatures in track environments or really hot days, i wouldn't think so.

Yea T6 is made for heavy duty diesel trucks. It is more than enough for a 2.0t.

Who's engines run at 2x speed regularly? Also diesel vs gas combustion are a bit less than the same thing. While it may work just fine, I'm not sure you're making the argument you think you are

You've said this before and you may be correct about the Castrol 5W30- if its EDGE you're talking about, that's what I run with 7k kms changes @160 k kms intervals .I have my pan off now and everything is super clean-no sludge and internal wear appears to be minimal............

Agreed. I fail to see the logic in that.
