    Transmission Whine

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
The transmission in my MY16 S6 (APR stage 1 ECU/TCU) is whining in first and second gear. In "D" I can hear the whine with increasing pitch from about 5 mph to about 12 mph. In "S" I can hear it a little longer since the second gear is held longer. Does anyone else have that too? In normal acceleration it is almost not noticeable since the gears shift up quickly. However, in stop and go traffic or in a parking lot where I can only go ~5-15 mph there is this constant whine with rpm dependent pitch that is very irritating to me. When I asked my APR dealer at Waterfest he told me the whine was normal and was related to pump(s) building pressure if I recall correctly. Any experience/advise from other DL501 owners out there? I'm scheduled to have my APR DPs installed and go stage 2 next week but I want to make sure I don't need a trip to the dealership before I get that done.

My 2016 S7 (same drivetrain) does not whine at all. I get the normal sound of the drivetrain in motion followed by gearchange across all drive modes.

I have similar experience with my 2014 S6 under exactly the same conditions. Sent the car to two different dealerships and both reported that this is normal.

Does it happen all the time or does it get better as the car warms up? Just wondering as I had a similar issue pop up late last year and it was driving me nuts. It would be really bad when the car was cold but would get better as the car warmed up. It ended up being a transmission bushing that needed a software update. Yes, I said a bushing needed a software update and my SA was as WTF as I was.

I swear I hear the same thing! Ok I know this sounds weird but I have the A/C on 100% of the time in my car and when I turn it off I swear the sound goes away. Just for giggles will you try that for me?

I have heard something similar, maybe a handful of times or so. Always when in manual mode running 1st and 2nd gear revs up to 3-4k when noticed. It doesn't last the entire drive and doesn't sound like the transmission. The whine clearly comes from the engine compartment so I assumed it was as you noted, a pump or another accessory. Not worried about it and would never be able to reproduce it for the dealer anyways.

I can hear my whine always between ~5-12 mph on acceleration. On deceleration it appears again somewhere below ~10 mph. It is always there independent of A/C on or off or engine cold or hot. Every time I accelerate or decelerate. In normal driving it is almost unnoticeable but in stop and go traffic or while driving very slow (e.g. in a parking lot or the staging lanes) it is a constant whine that is somewhat irritating.

I have been hearing this for 2 months in my 2013 S6. I recently took it in to the dealer for some other issues and asked them to investigate the whine. The tech had Audi check it out and they said the gearbox needed to be replaced. They didn't know what the issue was, but suggested replacement. My car was TD1 for software, so I won't be buying a new transmission. I've read that some of the other DSG models do this when the clutch bearings get worn. I will likely have it taken apart and fixed while upgrading the clutch packs.

Hey, I also have a whine on my brand new 2018 S6 and it doesn't have any mods. I thought it was the HVAC fan, but it wasn't. Then when I turned off A/C before shutting off the engine (I always do that), heard the whine went away. I said to myself 'WTF'? How in the world is the A/C compressor whines inside the car and not outside??? But I'm 100% sure in my car it's the A/C compressor. Right now it's subtle enough that I only hear it with the stereo off. My wife heard it first, and I started investigating, thinking it was the fan. In a way, glad it's not just my car, and maybe 'normal', but hope it doesn't get worse over time like on your car, or it'd also annoy the hell out of me. Just curious what it can be. Maybe we'll have to start another thread, since the OP's whine seems to be the tranny... unless it's not. Ha ha.

I also have a 2016 S6 (18K miles) and have not heard a whine to this point. I'm curious to hear what you find out.

Thanks a lot man. So it's normal to hear such mild whining then? By the way, where the hell is the compressor? The pictures were not clear. Thanks again.

I hear mine all the time at low speeds. My APR tuner told me its normal so I don't worry too much but it is annoying in stop and go traffic or other low speed driving. When I go back to him for my 2 year service in March, I can follow up again to get some more info.

Thanks man. Seems like normal then; just hope it doesn't get louder. But what we hear is not the spur gear arrangement, since the noise is only when clutch is engaged; must be something not entirely right with the compressor then, no? That's very weird, as the clutch usually makes noise when not engaged. Maybe the compressor is very close to the firewall and that's why we hear it, since it's typically af the front of the engine. Guess will look for it when I change the oil for the first time. It must be on the passenger side under the engine. Thanks.

I hear a whine in mine as well, but I think itís the active noise cancellation and some weird feedback loop. Itís only audible during freeway runs and itís very feint, barely audible.

They removed my headliner during the airbag recall and I canít but wonder if they pinched the ANC microphone cable up there, or if itís something totally unrelated.

Sorry, I donít mean to hijack, but anyone else here this type of whine? Maybe Iíll start my own thread...

Also, AWD cars seem notorious for drive shaft whine.

Oh, so it's driven by the rear of the motor? Wasn't clear on the engine pictures of an Audi document. But looks like a typical clutch compressor, so still baffled by the noise when engaged. Oh well. At least it's normal, so not worried anymore. Thanks a lot for your help.

I had this same whine 1st or 2nd gear 5-12 mph. Could never manually shift into 3 since the speed is so low. Transmission was replaced by the dealer, the work order showed AoA wanted oil samples and other tests done before accepting that it was an internal issue and approved a new trans.

They reset all my vagcom settings during the troubleshooting.

Did you ever find out what was wrong with the transmission?

Yeah, plus how many miles on it, year of car, and if you're the original owner? With used cars, you never know if they were abused, and how badly. Thx.

2016 S6, bought new. I don't drive much just passed 8k miles on it, whine started at 5k miles.

Will never know what was wrong with it but it was the same exact description others have reported, 5-12mph. I park in a lot of parking structures so it was very annoying low speeds in spaces that resonate sound.
