Drive select with the asterisk in steering wheel

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have googled and googled. Can the asterisk button on the RS7 be programmed to change the drive select mode. I'd love to be able to use it to change between comfort and dynamic.

Afaik, by default (stock programming)...it can't as it is linked to a few standard commands.
Only way is by adding a programmed chip between it.
Alex might maybe able to help out in the near future....but there are a few working on custom chips atm :).
Edit: what buildyear is yours? You can always swap the steeringcontroles with the ones that have the drive select buttons (contact Alex@europrice)

Like mentioned below, only the facelift performance ones have it and replaces the * function.
Might be maybe possible to program it over custom chip in the near future....

Ok just looked at that and for $325 I might do it.

Anyone know how hard that is to swap?

Since the RS7 has it I would think VCDS coding would work as a button is a button.

Agreed. Would love this feature. I'd buy VCDS just for this. Does seem like it would be a coding issue

I have the drive select button on my steering wheel, the there is no way to make it work... It does not work with the pre-facelift C7. MY 2012, 2013, 2014

IIRC, if you have to have the C7 facelift with the updated cluster, it will allow you to see which drive mode you're in. There is one caveat, if you have MY 2015 I think with some coding it'll work, you just will not see the "drive mode" on the
    DIS.

You need a C7.5 facelift model to use the RS6/7 Performance controls which have the DS button.

2016+ models can use coding to enable the DIS to display the Drive Select mode when the button is used.

No coding works on pre-facelift models to make these controls work unfortunately.

Not that I am a VCDS expert but it seems to me you could code the asterisk to function like the drive select button.

No, it is the "wildcard" button. You program it in the MMI just like setting the settings for "Individual". When I had my S3, I programmed the "wildcard" * button to toggle between night and day mode lighting on the NAV. The option to set it for Drive Select was available as well even though there was already a Drive Select button on the dash.

Agreed...in my 2016 RS7, you can program the wildcard button to do a few select functions thru the MMI, but the function for drive select toggle is not available.

I ordered the drive select button from Alex of Europrice and installed it...worth every penny.

I have it by default on my car--I can't imagine living without it. Even with it, there are 2 too many modes--I want Individual and Dynamic and that's it. Cycling through them makes me yearn *every time* for my M1 and M2 buttons. Then I accelerate from nothing and forget all about it...

Pop off the airbag and then pry off the surrounding plastic trim. The buttons have a spike beneath them that allows you to pry the buttons up.

Thank you for this. I was going to PM you with this question given you have a rs-P. I've been wondering whether you have to cycle through all 4 options or if you press the button and then use the scroll wheel to pick. Bummer that you have to cycle -- but better than what the rest of us have!

How do you "pop off the airbag?" And is there any VCDS coding required once you have the new set of controls installed, or is it literally "plug and play" once the new button is in?

The are two holes behind the steering wheel that you stick a flathead through to pry off the tabs that mount the airbag. You hang to turn the wheel once for each side to access them. If you take a picture with your phone it will give you a better idea. Also, there are videos on YouTube with instructions from people who have removed it. It might take a bit the first time, but you'll get the hang of it.

If you have a facelift and buy drive select buttons and want to see it change in the dis (dash) then yes, you have to change the coding. I do not know what it is, someone posted on the forum a while back about it.

Thanks, I found the video of the guy popping it off in an A7 on YouTube. How hard is it to pop off the black trim?

I do have a facelift (2017 RS7 standard), so it looks like some coding is required. I'll have a look around the forum and see if I can find it.

The black trim you just pry off with a nylon trim tool. Just go slow.

I just did the coding a week or so ago. Here was the thread I used to do it. If you find a better one and / or determine that one should do more than just change the 5th digit from a 0 to an 8, please let me know.

    @Street Nasty

I already have the buttons and bought them new for €130. But unfortunatly it isnt working because i have a pre facelift model. I hope someone will find a workaround or something.

I think my only option is to retrofit a MIB 2 so it will work
