    Audi Ute Build

I'm starting this project and I figured I would share the progress with you as I go. Smyth Performance just released their ute kit for the B6/B7 chassis. I've had my deposit in since last October and the first of several kits is shipping sometime next week. This project will work out well by blending several of my hobbies together. I'm definitely looking forward to it.

    Picture from their website:

Here's what I'm starting with. I spent months and months searching for a good base. I would have preferred not to start with a USP, but I really couldn't find a reasonably priced B6/B7 that didn't have 160k miles on it. I'm pretty good at finding Audis and this was the best of the worst. It's not quite as nice as it looks in the pictures...if that makes you feel any better.

Starting to take all the stuff out of the back seat and trunk area:

More pictures to follow...just waiting on the kit to get here!

Not my cup of tea, but it's all good. Most interested in the skill sets needed, what tools and where it gets cut.

Not my cup of tea either but if you have the skills to do this yourself, i fully support the endeavour. Looking forward to the updates.

A rollover and that cabin is going to collapse like house of cards. Is there a cage added?

I like their Jetta kit, but I'm not so sure about this one. Hopefully it looks better from a different angle. Either way, I look forward to seeing the finished product!

Please don't chop that USP :( I see hundreds of cars on CL that would be a better candidate than this for very little money.

    I'm afraid so.

I don't really understand the purpose of a ute in North America.

Guys, it's just a damn car. A steel box with 4 wheels, an engine and gearbox. USP, S4 or RS4, it doesn't matter what the base car is.

I get that some of you may not understand the purpose, but you don't have to. The owner is making this car what he wants it to be, and that's all that's important.

We all modify our cars the way we see fit. Our mods or taste may not be practical, nor make sense to third parties, but it doesn't really matter. Because, we're building the car for ourselves, not anyone else.

Chill out, and appreciate the skills involved in doing something different.

Dude, get chopping this car, I can't wait to see it all finished. Got a color in mind? Wheels?

I'm cool with all the comments...good or bad. As Nollywood said, I'm building the car for me. Like it or hate it, I'm still moving forward...and you will see all of my updates posted here.

Last year I started looking for a VW Rabbit truck. However, the thought of driving 60-65 mph on the highway with no a/c and no airbags didn't thrill me. Those seem better suited for local trips around town. This build solves that problem for me. It'll be quiet inside while doing 75 with the cruise control set. It'll retain the airbags...and the a/c. It's everything I would want in a modern version of the VW Rabbit truck.

I have considered an Audi A4 truck in the past, though in my case, it would be lifted if I went ahead.

The owner obviously doesn't think so.

An estate car has a very different purpose to a pick-up truck.

It's not a pickup truck.. It is a hacked up sedan with a smaller "bed" than an Avant... I wonder how well the crumple zones will work in a rear end or side impact crash.. is the kit NHTSA certified? No, Who even needs that... What about the side impact airbags? Just ditch those you don't need them... Hell I bet the kit states "Off Road Use Only" (for legality reasons)....

I think you're making way too big a deal about this, because it's not your thing, and an A4 USP is being chopped up.

You're bringing in legal issues - tell me this, how many B6 A4's with hacked front bumpers for larger intercoolers, with most of the rebars missing would stand even basic scrutiny in the United States (never mind NHTSA) based upon what you're saying? How would these fare in a 30mph crash?

You mention airbags. When folk fit flat-bottomed steering wheels in their single-stage airbag B5/6 A4's, how many would actually deploy when they should, in a frontal impact? I don't live in the United States, but I'm aware that it's actually illegal to tamper with SRS devices. Then there are folk who junk their safe side-airbagged front seats, for nicer ones with no airbags, and perform the resistor mod to keep the airbag lights off, true?

    There's loads more.

You also mention you bet the kit says "off road use only". Well...isn't that true of most of the aftermarket mod parts for our cars? Dude!! If we went by your analogy, we would all be driving bone-stock cars. I understand you don't like this guy's idea for a USP. But...it's his choice. Getting all self-righteous like this is the only mod that isn't NHTSA-certified borders on hypocritical.

Live a little, and appreciate what others may do to their cars, even if you don't agree.

And just so you're aware, the B6 Sedan is actually longer than an Avant, from the rear of the front seats to the rear bumper.

Yes you are right... There are people who half ass their cars.. I am just not one of them... I am simply stating that this is a bad idea.. Not for being a 'ute' but for hacking up a perfectly good car....

The sedan is only 3mm longer (overall) than the avant...

A lot of modifications are bad ideas...air ride...slammed cars...over sized wheels...the list is endless.

He's gonna hack up that USP for sure...such is life. I too will tear my perfectly good B6 Votex Avant Quattro. Again, that's life, it happens.

The Sedan may be only 3mm longer than the Avant...but at least, you agree it's longer, not shorter.

Yes... but the ute is going to be smaller due to the bed design.. So the avant is actually going to have more usable space (just not vertical)... Then again I have roof racks so I can haul just as much if not more..

I'm a huge avant fan, but they don't work for me. I need that vertical space.

I tried a small trailer behind my sedan for a while. That setup isn't too bad, but storing, removing, setting up, and re-storing the trailer is a painful process for something that can be thrown into the bed of a truck.

This is awesome, get it done!
I'm with Nollywood, who cares? The USP is just some damn bumper trim on an A4, wow! It's SO RARE! Did you contact AOA and check production numbers first! It could be one of five! >sarcasm< .
I'm happy to see this stuff happen, so many good ideas for projects and builds that never get started or get junked when someone realizes their idea was ridiculous. I think that UTE is ugly as hell, but also has it's own weird style. He's taking a sedan that barely has enough room for an 8-year old in the back seat and making it useful!
And as far as safety, gimme a break. You know the airbags in the B6 are pretty much all expired right? You know the manufacturer has filed for bankruptcy because they couldn't afford the recall costs Clicktitty click? The A4 is a decently safe car when used as designed, but....come on, half you guys have cars slammed SO low you can't navigate a mcdonalds parking lot or you ride street bikes or jump off cliffs drunk every weekend. You're worried about HIS crumple zones!? LOL!
    Awesome! Can't wait...

This forum is great. After reading this thread i see support and disgust with the OPs vision. Neither side of the argument is wrong, neither should be discouraged. Forums are for entertainment, bouncing ideas off one another, and learning things from the people with experience. Thats what they are for me at least. A social network for people with a very similiar interest.

To the OP...IMO that is one of the most terrible looking vehicles I have ever seen. Reminds me too much of the chevy SSR. With that said, i do think its cool you have the vision to build that. I will follow the thread because i enjoy seeing somebodies "dream" come to life. Much like the b6 turned race car by malone tuning. I found it fascinating. Why on that USP though!? Ill trade you mine instead..a regular 2003 a4 1.8t. lol What you are doing is like a pretty chick putting on make up to enhance her looks, but over doing it and becoming hideous.YIKES!

Most important, have fun with it. Bring your visions to life. I cant wait to see the finished project!

I like how the rear flows with the side of the Ute. But the front end does not flow too well, and I am thinking due to the headlights. Possibly photoshop a Boser hood onto it and see if it makes a difference. This is all opinion based, though. Boser hood with Joey mod and the front end may flow with the rest of the vehicle.

I'm all for uniqueness and individuality, so I'm really liking this project. Maybe design a plug and play BBQ chef area (ie cooler for meats, refreshments, and such) that can be taken right off with ease once returned home, from possible meets (if you are into that kind of thing). Canopy cover for the trunk bed would conceal the secret chef section in the rear. This is what I most likely would have done if I were still into going to meets.

But the other factor I like is it is a pick up truck utilizing the Quattro drivetrain system. This is one case where an airbag system would come into play for function not for slamming the vehicle, but for raising it if the vehicle was to see any off road terrain. Couple that with the fact the pick up can still be modified for decent power to more than decent power, and this is a really neat project.

Any plans for extra power? Also is it the 3.0 or 1.8T? Auto or manual transmission?

Thanks for all the comments...lovers and haters alike. Seerlah, I like where you are going with your thoughts.

The car is a 1.8T with a 6 speed manual. I will not own an automatic Audi anytime in the near future. I've flown to get the get the right manual car before.

I've always liked these kind of kits.

The tail lights don't look right, though. I think it needs taller tail lights or something.

And lol, you guys sound like Mopar guys. They freak the hell out if you even want to put a k&n air filter on instead of a stock paper filter.

It's a 4000 pound hunk of metal. That was made, AT LEAST, 12 years ago. Calm down.
