Looks like th B7 is a fairly safe car...

...I found this on a Mini site. I am trying to convince my wife that the Mini is not a good car for us with a baby on the way and that the A3 or A4 sedan would both make good replacements. Mini ranked 98, A3 ranked78 and the A4 ranked 74. 100 is the industry average.

The B7 was also 1 of 3 Audis to receive the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's "Top Safety Pick" award.

One other thing to consider. All things being equal, the car with less mass is going to take the brunt of an accident. If you get hit by an 18 wheeler, Suburban or even a 5200# VW Touareg, I doubt that it's going to matter much whether you're driving the 2600# Mini or the 3600# Audi.

A4 also has one of the best ratings for crashes this year on numorous sites.

8 out of 10 on front impact crash
9 out of 10 on side impact crash.

I'm with you - a mini would not be a good family car specially for a newborn. I would get an Audi for sure. Only other option would possible be a Volvo. They are safe cars.
