:: ECS Tuning :: NEW!! ECS Performance Baffled Oil Catch Can System

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!

Introducing ECS's Performance Baffled Oil Catch Can System for the B8 3.0T, engineered and tested in house. Our system was designed with the consumer in mind to provide effortless installation with no necessary modifications to be a perfect fit for your 3.0T.

Today's direct fuel injection systems have one drawback. Without fuel vapor to help clean the intake valves, oil particles are drawn into the intake from the PCV system will deposit onto the valves and ports. Over time this will result in increased levels of carbon buildup, resulting in lost power and poor drivability.

Key benefits of the ECS Baffled Oil Catch Can System:

    • Highly Efficient Oil Separator (Catch Can):
    • Strategically positioned 4 chamber baffle system maximizes oil / air separation
    • Engineered to create multiple changes in the direction of airflow within the separator to cause oil droplets to fall out of suspension before exiting the catch can
    • Knurled and black anodized integrated oil dipstick makes inspecting oil volume of reservoir clean and simple
    • Fully serviceable for routine cleaning and maintenance; Includes 2.5mm allen key to remove baffle plates for cleaning
    • -10AN ORB (O-Ring Boss) fittings for leak-free fitting connections
    • 6061-T6 billet machined body, anodized black for lasting protection and appearance
    • Easy to drain reservoir, simply un-threads from the oil separator for quick draining or cleaning
    • The OEM fine oil (cyclonic) separator is retained. Due to the retention of this component, the catch can will not have to be emptied as often, as its focus will be on capturing the ultra-fine oil vapor
    • Completely reversible installation, as no OEM components are permanently modified. This is ideal for those who choose to remove their catch can during the cold winter months

As always, it's a well thought out kit. ECS seems to be providing some good hardware in recent years, cheers to that.

Question though, is the juice really worth the squeeze on this? Majority of carbon buildup comes from valve timing/overlap, not from the PCV system. Curious if ECS is aware of something that I'm not on the 3.0T.

I had a catch can literally explode in the engine bay in my B7. Midwestern winters sure sucked.

Glad I haven't had to deal with that weather in a few years.

Looks great - one downside appears to be that it shares real estate with a lot of secondary cooling reservoirs....

Just wondering why you guys chose to leave the spout under the charger that comes directly from pvc to charger..
That's the main spot where the oil enters the engine from the pvc

Your winters in Van are rather mild so *personally* I wouldn't worry if i was you.

That being said...I froze my PCV system on my '09 STi and blew the seals on my turbo driving out to the ski hill in -40 so I don't think this mod will be good for me.

No. I ran a catch can system on my B7 A4 in Denver. In winter you tend to get a lot more moisture, so the can tends to fill quickly. If you don't empty it often enough, it can freeze and block the airways or damage the can. This system says that it only does the finest particles and shouldn't fill quickly at all. Just keep an eye on your level and drain often in winter.

As most of us know the main contributor to carbon build up on DI engines is the lack of port injectors to clean the back of the valves. Regardless of whether the engine is PI or DI, the intake valve spends time in the cylinder and can be exposed to unburned fuel deposits. The catch can is simply a method to help reduce the amount of oil from the PCV system that is re-introduced to the intake. Reducing the amount of oil in the intake charge can help aid in a more complete burn and in reducing deposits. There are other, more complicated solutions to this problem such as adding port injectors or methanol injection that could completely eliminate/reduce carbon build up issues.

The catch can works with the factory oil separator. After exiting the valve cover labyrinth the crankcase vapors are routed through the catch can and then into the factory oil separator module. You could block off the PCV connection to the supercharger to introduce even less oil to the intake tract, but that complicates the install of this kit significantly involving supercharger removal. This kit does not completely eliminate crankcase ventilation into the intake, but it does reduce the overall amount.

We've actually never test fit this on the 3.0T A6. It could potentially work, but we can't confirm since we have not installed it our selves.

I'll update this later with some data on how much oil it actually catches but for now, here is a quick review:

The quality of the kit is very good, I did not realize until installing it that all of the fittings are made out of aluminum.

The DIY instructions are mostly correct, The hose clamps I got were not the same as the ones listed in the DIY but worked well. There are a few steps I'd do in a different order but overall pretty straight forward.

Pro Tip: The ends of the stock breather hoses can swivel, this makes tucking them away much easier.

    Now the bad...

I don't think I'd be out of place to say this catch can is not at all easily serviceable. There is no way in hell you are going to be able to remove it without spilling shit all over the place. I'd highly suggest ECS take another look at the mount for it. Something that the catch can either slide into or is clamped into. This would make it so that you could service it by removing the hoses and pulling the can out the top. Alternativelty you could put a bigger dipstick hole on it that would allow fluid to be sucked out the top somewhat helping the issue. (This can somewhat be done as is and will be my plan to empty it)

Honestly, at this point, I think this is more of a headache than it is worth unless you are in a hot area and running high boost.

Thanks Whipped. So it looks like this mod adds a little more work to doing the plugs in the future as well on the drivers side. Can the hoses just be moved out of the way or will it have to be removed? Also you said "hot area" why hot area is blow by higher in hotter areas? I have never heard this, the higher boost makes sense.

The catch can will catch a TON of liquid when it is cold outside. It is suggested to remove it completely when it is below freezing.

You'll want to remove the hoses to do a plug change. It should not be that bad though, just undo the 4 hose clamps and pull them off.

I really hope they design a different bracket to hold the catch can in. That is easily my biggest complaint as it is simply not serviceable. Getting it in was a PIA, I can't even imagine what it will be like to remove it when it is filled with fluid.

The hoses can just be moved out of the way. No need to remove them from the car.

My guess regarding the "hot area" comment is that during winter, the catch can requires more frequent service to prevent any water condensation from entering the engine block and freezing. ECS's installation manual recommends that if you can't frequently empty the catch can during winter months, you should just remove the system all together to prevent any damage.

I totally agree that service via removal of the reservoir will likely make an absolute mess. It was a PITA to get the reservoir in and threaded properly. I'm also planning on using an oil extractor fed through the dip stick hole to empty the can.

I had a BMS double baffle catch can on a highly boosted 535i and like it a lot. Something like $150, easy to install and even easier to get to/empty. That's what I'm hoping we can get for our platform...

How would this work? Wouldn't the system then be sealed again and not allow ventilation? Or are you saying vent to atmosphere at the can and block the pcv port at the supercharger? Does the stock oil separator only allow condensed oil to flow back into the block or are there vents in there as well? In other words, are the two valve cover vents the only vents for the PCV system and vent the block as well? Thanks.

No chance we'll be redesigning the mounting bracket. To empty it all you do is remove the 2 allen bolts, lift it out of the way, then unscrew the bottom of the can. If you empty it regularly you shouldn't have any issue spilling the contents. It's also why there's a dipstick so you can check it. The first notch on the dipstick is about 2 inches up. Which when it gets to that point would leave plenty of room for the contents inside not to spill out if you have to tip it at an angle.

The can would need to be vented if you block off the fresh air port.

As far as I know everything vents back into the intake. I'm not sure if the block is vented it may just only be vented at the valve covers.

Which when it gets to that point would leave plenty of room for the contents inside not to spill out if you have to tip it at an angle.
That is actually a great point, you might be able to remove the hoses and rotate the can 90 deg ccw and pull it up.

I'll give it a shot in a few weeks and let you know how it goes.

    +1

This is actually a great solution! That'll definitely be much kinder to my knuckles than trying to jam my hand back down under the can and likely faster than vacuuming the contents out through the dipstick port.

    Thanks!

Anyone have any updates on this catch can? I’m thinking it might be a good idea to install at DP levels. Would like to get an idea of how much oil gets caught to see if it’s worth it.

I've had it in for a few months now.
    Hasn't really caught any oil.
Not enough to show up on the dipstick anyways.
They need to rework the kit and make a plug for the bottom of the charger and a fitting to go into the oil separater and T it into the can then back to the intake or something.

Same thing here. I also don't think the catch can really works.

I pulled it to do plugs and there was some oil in the return line

I double checked the install and it was correct.

Oh and to follow up, you can undo the hoses and remove the can to drain it but it isn't exactly convenient.

Thanks for the follow-up guys, I'll give my R&D staff a heads up of your finding so they can review. On our test cars, we did find oil/water/etc, so yall may be the lucky select few with no blow by issues!

Ya I'm really hoping they come up with a solution to eliminate the oil separater from going into the bottom of the charger..It will be a perfect kit then.
It can't just be plugged off like they stated at the beginning of this release.

Back when I had my MK5 GTI I modified my catch can by drilling and tapping a hole in the bottom and adding a line with a valve that came down to the back of the fog light grill. This allowed me to put a bottle underneath and simply turn the valve to empty...worked like a charm.

That will work for me. I’m in a climate where I don’t need to take it off in the winter.

how about putting a fitting on the bottom of the can then run a hose under the car. somwhere accessible with a ball valve so that you can empty it without removing...
