B8.5 - Respraying front bumper - does this sound right?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
First time poster, long time lurker. Yesterday, I was involved in a low speed collision where I rear ended a 3 series during stop and go traffic on the Bay Bridge (SF Bay Area). The driver I rear ended got out looked at her bumper and saw there was only a tiny bit of paint transfer on her bumper, waved it off and drove away. My car, on the other hand, ended up with a cracked grill and paint rubbed off the bumper in a few spots. The bumper also also appears to be misaligned and there is a +2mm gap between the bumper and the lower part of the driver's side headlamp housing. It looks like the headlamp is angled upwards by a degree or two.

A co-worker recommended a body shop which just happens to be the "go to" body shop for several local auto dealerships, including Audi/VW. I stopped by today for an estimate and the shop estimator said they will paint approximately 40% of the bumper (all the damage is on the driver side), remove the small dents using a heat gun and install the grill which I will be supplying (BO grill from Europrice). The price they quoted for the job is $1062.00.

Does this sound right? I feel like they will do a good job, but the price sounds high based on searching other members posts on this board. The color of my car is monsoon grey, so maybe that has something to do with it?

    Anyways, pics

Sounds about right for a regular body shop. They gave you the "audi" price. Because we are all rich and have money. Now take it over to maaco and have it done for 350. lol

Check out European Collision Center in SF. They repaired my B8.5 S4, the only way you could tell there was paint work was with a depth meter.

Being so new, chances are it can be blended in. Had work on my 13 this yr and had the rear bumper blended in. Can't even tell once it was cleared and polished.

Sounds about right. Just make sure they at least warranty the job for a couple years.

Thanks for the advice guys. I think I will go with this body shop's estimate as they offer a "lifetime" warranty on their work.

You realize you are paying 1000 a panel right? Most shops charge about 250-350 per panel.

Well, I thought the quoted price seemed high, which is why I made this thread. But the other posters in this thread seemed to think the price was about right... so now I'm

Last time I got a bumper repainted (when I had my Focus ST) it cost around $500... and that's including filling a crack that was caused by running over a possum that jumped in front of my car.

When I first looked at that pic before I even looked at the responses I thought in my head "1k". That's about what I would expect out here on the east coast from a good shop.

Also, just curious, how did you rear end someone in stop and go traffic? Distracted?

I had a woman in an explorer rub the front bumper at 1200 miles on the clock. The damage was very similar to yours. A little misalignment and a large swath of missing paint. It was $900 for a complete respray. So that's about right considering they are doing more work for you with the grille.

Thx for being that guy. Stop fcukin riding ass, it's infuriating. When it happens to me, all I can think about is how badly I want to get out of my car and physically harm/assault the asshat riding me. It's not Nascar, you aren't drafting, adjust accordingly for your lack of ability.

and despite that useless opinion it still happens. Also, miraculously, my car is able to travel OUTSIDE the borders of that area, believe it or not. It's tremendous.

I won't tailgate ever anymore (my teenage years were a different story). Now, it is simply for the fact that god forbid you rear end someone at even 5mph around here, they get out, see you have an Audi (or other nice German car with presumably good insurance) and they immediately start wriggling on the ground in pain or screaming that they're disabled for life now lol.

Ironically though I see all the time NJ State Troopers get RIGHT on people's ass and stay there if they are going too slowly in the left lane. As much as I want to do that to people who are going 65 in the left lane, I'm sure, ironically, if a cop saw me doing it I would be pulled over immediately! Must be nice to be above the law *sigh*

But when your in your early 20s, you live life on the edge.

Uh... I wasn't tailgating on a clear freeway. This was stop and go traffic and the reason I was following too close was because the sun was shining directly into my eyes and I lost track of the car in front of me.

See that's the thing... they're not respraying the entire bumper. If they were I wouldn't question it. To respray the bumper they would have to take off the grill anyways right? So the only extra work compared to yours would be to take out the slightly dented area by the grill. Anyways, most of the posters in this thread think the price is about right so I'll go with it. New OEM Black Optics grill is ~$680 shipped from Europrice... ugh. Anyone have a Black Optics they want to part with lol.

I was rear ended a few months ago and the total bill to remove, respray and replace the rear bumper was $760 from an Audi dealers body shop. This also included R&R on the license plate holder on the deck lid. I'm guessing the front bumper might have a little more labor involved in the R&R but the repair cost shouldn't be too much different.

FWIW you should respray the whole thing. Don't blend it. You will always see it.

From those pictures I honestly would leave the bumper as is. Get some touch up paint and fix the areas where the paint got removed tho. Also I would remove the headlight housing and see if the bracket got cracked or bent. See if you can fix it yourself before you pay $1000+ Obviously fix the cracked grill, which is another easy DIY and you gotta remove the front bumper anyways. You can see if there is any damage behind it.
