    C7 A6 3.0TFSI oil change

    Hi everyone,

I just have some questions for you guys who have done oil changes before or usually do it yourself. Which method do you use ? Do you use an extraction pump and suck the oil from the dipstick hole or drain the oil by removing the drain plug on the bottom of the car ?

Can you extract the same amount of oil out using the pump compared to removing the drain plug ? If removing the drain plug method is better, how would you get most of the oil out when using ramps, since the front of the car is higher than the rear ?

    Thank you 😊

I use the top side extraction method, using a mityvac tool. Quick, easy, and painless. I would say the majority of the oil comes out... There will be residual left in the pan, but it's such a small percentage that it's insignificant. And to further this method... I believe it is how Audi changes the oil.

I also bought a dipstick to help with filling up the new oil... I don't trust the mmi guage enough yet.

There are a lot of DIY threads on this site and the other enthusiast forums, plus some YouTube videos pertaining to the 3.0 TFSI that you will find helpful. I opted for investing in an extractor myself, rather than crawling under the vehicle, pulling the underbody splash pan, and potentially contending with the 14mm drain plug threads and gasket. While a good extractor is an investment, I think the no muss no fuss approach pays for itself over time. Especially since the filter itself is above board.

In terms of ramps, I don't have any experience with that, as they recommend changing the oil on a flat surface. In terms of getting as much of the old oil extracted, I took a tip from a YouTube video, and once the initial extract is complete, I pour 350-500ml of fresh oil in and continue extracting until the extracted oil begins to clear. Good enough for me. And seconds to the dip stick recommendation for checking the final level.

I personnally drain the oil from bottom, filling first two big pots measuring 5 liters each, with the front up on jacks, and I lower the car to make sure all goes away. I measure all the oil out.

I put the plug back, and the same amount of oil that came out, and then I check in mmi.

Thank you for the replies. I will go with the extraction method then, since it's a lot quicker, easier and doesn't make a mess at all. With the 36mm socket to remove the oil filter, can it be a normal size or has to be a deep socket ? Obviously it's not 36mm in the picture, but would that kind of socket work ?

A normal socket would work. You might need an extension to go with it. The filter is on the drivers side rear. Give it a turn to open a valve that drains the filter while you're sucking the oil out.

I just did my first oil change on my a6...also first-time using a vacuum pump...it was the easiest oil change I have ever done in my 30 years of wrenching. I even wore stone colored shorts and didn't get a drop on me...lol

Any 36mm socket or adjustable wrench will work...while it will work I wouldn't use channel locks or vice grips as you will mar the surface of the filter cap.

I didn't think of it this time but next time I will weigh the amount that comes out...my pump is steel so I can't see how much comes out...my gut tells me that I got out as much as draining for the most part.

If you have amazon prime you can get a Mann filter for 13 bucks and 5 quart jug of mobil 1 0w40 for 25 bucks. Walmart has the same oil for 26 bucks as well.

Sorry didn't realize you were not in the US. But you still can probably buy Mobil 1 0w40 cheaper than anything else locally.

I finally changed my oil today. It really is easy and quick. Didn't make too much mess as well. I put in about 6.7L of oil, seems like it's missing a line just below the max line ? Or it's just the way the MMI gauge is ?
