    Say hello to Jade

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
She is 1 1/2 years old and I adopted her from animal control (owner surrender). She was an outside only dog and is not house broken or leash trained. She's scared of everything and every noise makes her jump. I picked her up on Friday, so everything is still very new and I know it will take awhile. She's skinny at 55 pounds and needs to gain about 10 more so I'm doing my best to fatten her up, but she's not hungry much. Maybe it's stress or maybe she's still recovering from being spayed on Wednesday (march 1). She loves to cuddle and doesn't leave my side. She is a "silver" lab, but I doubt she is full lab. My guess is she is part Weimaraner which gives her the coat color and beautiful green eyes. (That's why i named her Jade.)

(hope you can see these pics. i'm having trouble here.)

The pics are showing but congrats! Also congrats for a new thread than those stupid random post threads.

Hopefully she gets her shots asap. I had to go through that when I adopted my abandoned german shepherd... I thought he would have had his shots until he had Parvo in the 2nd week after having him but that was almost 11 years back.

    Baby steps here.
Leash training is first and foremost. We started just "walking" around the outside of the house. The yard walking is mainly for getting her to pee/poop in my yard. Different noises scare her and sometimes she'll just stand there frozen. That's getting better. Now we go for separate "walks" when I know she's not likely to have to pee/poop. We gradually move closer to a busy street (or some other new stimuli) so she can get used to seeing/hearing different cars/trucks/motorcycles, etc. Sometimes, I just have her look out the window to see what's going on in the neighborhood. (There's a new construction home, so different people and trucks are there daily)

I've enrolled in dog classes. First one on saturday (without dog). I'm also reading lots of web articles for dog "how to's".

I'm doing my best to be an even better dog owner/trainer than I was for Jackson.

That is good! I probably was not the best with my dog since I spoiled him after adopting him. I just felt bad that someone abandoned him. Especially a pure bred GSD (according to a vet).

She's doing GREAT! Her weight is where it should be and she's great on the leash. We walk 6 miles pretty much every day. She still has separation anxiety, though. Now that it's hot, I can't leave her in the car when I need to run errands so she has to stay home in her cage. I've set up my iPad to record her while I'm away and she is restless in there. Barking for awhile, then laying down, barking, laying, barking, laying. Then when I get home there is a puddle at the front of the cage where she has drooled from this activity.
I need to put her in the cage for short periods while I'm home. I leave the door open at night and she'll go in there to sleep, so it's not like she doesn't feel comfortable there.

She's also going to doggy daycare once a week and loves hanging out with her canine friends.
She's a sweet girl and I'm sure she's very happy with her new home.

Maybe you can sleep in an old t-shirt for a few nights in a row and leave that with her in her kennel when you leave? I've heard that having an item with owner's scent helps with some cases. Can't hurt....
