Question SERIOUS question. Mod or sell?!?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!

So, I have a Stock(except for wheel spacers, K&N Filter) Daytona Gray 2007 sedan. i bought her from first owner when she had 8800 miles. I am to the point where I would sell or start modding. Now 31k miles, never raced, never track'd, never seen snow/salt, rarely seen rain(twice ) Always hand-washed and garage kept. I have no use for a daily driver as i drive a company vehicle and have built a Jeep wrangler.
Budget for mods would be 6-10K.
Budget for new "garage queen" @65-85K
Any idea what my car could fetch on the market?
If i do mods, i am thinking :
gmg exhaust(if it is still around) with different tips
    JHM piggies
ECU Tune of some sort(leaning torwards JHM)
    Bilstein pss9 suspension(or similar)
    JHM Short throw shifter
Am i missing something? Any thoughts, advice, suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Dont hate me for saying it, but tempted to check out the new AlfaRomeo Giulia quadrifoglio.
Please help!!!! My wife is tired of being my soundboard

IMO your car could fetch high 30's to the right buyer. I don't think you will find a replacement that checks all the same boxes though. What are your car criteria? Kids? 4 seats? Manual? 2/4 door? newer car?

Your rs with your wish list of mods would be incredibly nice and scratch your itch undoubtedly .. down side is if you sell later it'll bring more money stock and mods would be a wash best case scenario.. if the need and want is a 4 dr sleeper and pulls double duty periodically than i say go for it! Your budget though sounds quite healthy and a 997 tt would definitely scratch your itch i bet

tempted to check out the new AlfaRomeo Giulia quadrifoglio.
This thing tugs on my strings too but in the end it's an Alfa. They have a lot to prove for me to end up in their lot. Keep the RS4 and mod away!

Two kids under 4 years old so i will need 4 doors and car seats for the foreseeable future. Manual is a must! My car still feels like new(ish). High 30's would go well towards an Alfa Romeo or... the list of 4 door sports sedan is sparse!

    That's low mileage!
If you like to drive standard... then keep her...
Manual days are done, very sad!
I was in the same situation awhile back... decided to keep the RS as 2nd car and get another daily...
Could have traded her in and got a RS7... but decided to keep her and get a S6 as well!
But my RS has 120000 km on it... so didn't want it as a daily!
    Best move I ever made!

I agree with the resale issue and that is why i hesitate to start modding now. I am kind of a purist... but i need a bit more than what the stock RS4 is offering. I SHOULD have a 4 door car as soccer and karate and the likes will be starting soon. Funny you bring up the 997, I drove one a few months back. That is my favorite Porsche all time! (minus the 918 spider of course)

Plus, i talked to a buddy at the dealership... Almost all of the Quadrifoglio's are sold out in my area. I would love to have the 500 hp rear wheel drive though...even though it's a turbo.

S6 is a great choice, great car!! I am glad to hear that others have had a tuff decision to make as well. Other option is to keep my car stock, and finance a...bmw m2....shhh dont tell anyone, i am not proud to say that aloud.

Knowing your budget for a new "garage queen" and the possibility of getting 30k+ for your current "garage queen", my suggestion would be to go for an R8 V8 or V10 with manual gated shifter.

I see only benefit, at the cost of loosing 2 seats.

I'm in a similar boat. I bought mine from the second owner and the car had been VERY well taken care of (this is my 2nd RS4 and while my previous one was nice, I didn't realize how much nicer it could be until this 08). Avus silver - bought it with 39k and I'm trying hard to erase the garage queen label as it has 42k on it now ;) It had a pcars gauge on it when I bought it and he gave me a bag with a few parts he planned to install. I've since installed wheel spacers but that's it. I've been struggling with modding it as well. The weight is obvious when you drive it and it definitely needs a little more pep but the sad reality that I'm trying to come to grips with is that even with some bolt-ons, most modern V6 and some I4s are going to eat her up - it's just not "fast" by todays standards. Of course, I'm generalizing but even tuned, exhaust+ a Mustang GT is going to walk you.

Now, the car has other perks - the interior, to me, is a timeless, sexy sports car interior. They are very unique looking (even if you have to explain what they are to every non-audi owner, lol). They do everything moderately well and it creates an enjoyable, comfortable driving experience (as long as you're not hellbent on winning a bunch of races ;) ).

So guys, please don't flame me. This is just my opinion and I'm being brutally honest about what I think the car is and what it isn't. OP, I think you're two options should be more like....Keep it and leave it stock or sell it and buy your upgrade. The reason is that even modded, it might not tick those boxes you want compared to current offerings. It's like training really hard knowing in advance that you're only going to go from 5h to 4th place.

Full disclosure - as I mentioned, this is my 2nd RS4. I recently bought a GT350R and then started shopping for another DD. I enjoyed the previous RS so much, I decided to pick another one up just for DD duty. This one that I found was nicer than I expected and I do feel a little guilty DDing it but that's life and I get to enjoy it. The mod bug is strong with me and there's not much to change on the Shelby so I'm looking to the RS....but might just hold off in anticipation of not keeping it forever.

After my long post (sorry!) - I think the moral of the story is... if you have the itch for the type of performance a $65k-$85k car can bring you, I suspect that even modded, the RS will not satisfy that itch.

Unfortunately, there are no other options that offer everything the RS4 does. And with the necessity to have 4 doors for the kids and others, stick with the RS4, stretch your mod budget to $16k get everything on your current list and supercharge it. This car supercharged is an absolute blast to drive!

Lol why aren't you proud to say that? As a former RS4 owner and current F80 M3 owner I think this is a tremendous idea. I was going to suggest an F80 M3 prior to reading this comment. I've driven an M2, it's way more fun to drive than an RS4. How necessary is AWD?

Modding your car will make you fall inlove with it even more so (or again). But there is something to be said about newer performance cars like the M2 or the AlfaRomeo. Ive always loved manuals but after driving a new c63 with paddles I can see why people go that route. Also.. New interiors are also a huge bonus for me.

I dont need all wheel drive. Only drive in summer. If i change vehicles I do want a tail happy replacement. At one point I was thinking about picking up an E92 M3 and doing some mods. I hear the M2 is a blast to drive!

Good Point! now only if i can convince my wife this is a good idea. I am unfortunately stuck with a 4 seater. 2 door is ok, but must have 4 seats. Thanks for the suggestion. U got me excited for about 45 seconds :)

Plus, its hard to beat that c63 merc interior. I sat in a 2017 in february and i am not gonna lie... it almost made me jump ship and go the way of the Benz. Buddy of mine has a 2007(ish) c63 convertable, he would be so jealous!

Great points stanglife!! At the end of it all, I have to be somewhat practical :( I dont do track days, i dont street race, but i totally get what u are saying about the RS maybe not scratching that itch. There is a chance i could keep my car and pick up an M2 or M3 but i don't know. I dont want to sound wishy-washy but this TUFF decision Thanks for sharing your point of view!!!

Just so you know... Replaced the 10 year old DRC with PSS9's last weekend after one of the DRC shocks blew, and got the regular off the shelf alignment. Even set to mid stiffness and no crazy track alignments, the car has completely transformed! It truly does feel like an entirely different animal. Responsive, nimble, even the ass end likes to rotate more, something I have never experienced in any Audi before!

Now THIS is the kinda stuff I love to read. I have the KW V3s sitting in the garage waiting to be installed and I can't wait.

    Supercharger, period.

I've said it before and will say it again... these cars (motor) is amazing with a SC.... of course I also have full JHM exhaust, short shift, ceramic brakes, fresh upper and lower bushings, bearings, carbon clean....

#1 upgrade....SC (I happen to have first gen APR, but there are many fine alternatives).... note however, you might have DEQ issues like me...

all those listed mods are great but they won't "transform" the car so they may only slightly delay your boredom/itch for something new. if you really want to transform it, the only option is a blower. all in on a blower you would be looking at 15k or so which is slightly over budget but well worth it IMO. get yourself a ride in a forced induction RS4 and see how you feel about it. it that doesn't reinvigorate you then its time to move on. there are a ton of great options out there right now for 65-85k that will blow the RS4 out of the water as far as performance and features but you won't find anything that replicates or directly competes with the RS4. good luck

Totally, Thanks for sharing lucidmatt!!! I either dont have enuff miles yet or have been lucky to not have a bad DRC yet. Would like to get ahead of it especially if you say you love yours so much.
SQ RS4 let me know how you like the V3's. I hear they are one of the best!

JHM supercharger is tempting at $7950 right now! It's on my list.

If you live in CA have them install

You MUST make sure all other components are at 100% too... plugs, injectors, CC, etc

    For $8k that's a lot of fun

Thanks man, appreciate your insight! You and others might be right. Looking at the APR and the JHM SC's currently. I have a local shop that would love to do the install. I am going to drive the rear wheel drive quadrifoglio and an M3 next week. I dont know anyone in the chicagoland area with a blown RS4.

I will definitely post my feedback on the KW V3s once I have them installed and have a chance to test them out.

One thing to note, my car only has 44k miles and while there are no "leaks" from the DRC, they just don't feel right to me. Not sure if they are just old or maybe I'm just looking for more than they offer, but I am hoping the KW V3s (along with a few other goodies I am installing) "transform" the cars handling.

This car supercharged is an absolute blast to drive!

AGREE 100%!!! The APR Supercharger absolutely transformed my car. You will not be able to drive it without grinning from ear to ear. Another thing to add is that unlike the some of the RWD turbo options you are considering this will be usable power with the AWD and gobs of low end torque with ZERO lag. As FT said get a ride in one and you will know immediately. The transformation is that DRASTIC!!

So nice RS4 + $15k = $50k, 10 year old car with the problems that a modified 10 year old car brings.... Just playing devils advocate, guys - I own and love my RS4 but I think my concerns are similar to the OPs.
