Help! WTF is this LOUD sound?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Car is a 2013 Audi S6

    Video: https://youtu.be/FrioihNMfqs

Just started happening. There are some similar videos online, but I am not able to determine what it is similar to. I figure somebody on here with a better ear than I will be able to tell me.

Car is covered under warranty, so my main concern is drivability until I get it to the dealer.

The sound can be heard outside the car from 100 feet away, it's that loud. Definitely coming from the engine compartment.

    • Definitely coming from the engine compartment.
    • Does not seem to change with engine RPM.
    • AC/Heat does not matter

Haha, my 2013 S6 started doing that about 3 weeks ago. It's a leaking oil separator. You can drive it. It only makes a noise at light loads.

I replaced mine myself in my garage for about $220.

Other threads with a similar sound think it is the PCV valve.

So based on those vids, with the car running, remove your oil cap, see if the noise goes away. If it does, PCV

Mine just did it tonight. So glad I'm not the only one. Have 78k miles on it. I was hoping it wasn't the turbo. Thank you.

Turned out to be a breather problem fixed under a TSB (warranty). Thanks for the help!

My car just started making this noise. Hopefully I can get into the dealer soon. Sounds terrible! My boost is also cut too!

Yep, same thing with mine too. It won't start making the screech until the car is warmed up. Parts are coming this week.

i feel like my car smells smokey. I believe it is related to the failing breather valve? Besides the noise, is it OK to drive around for a couple of days?

Yep, sitting at a light I will get a whiff of breather oil vapors. I have noted a minuscule but nevertheless increased oil consumption too, which makes sense. When I get the oil separator out, I will try and figure out exactly what failed. The huge vacuum in the crankcase makes me believe that there is a valve or seal in the separator that is letting all of the crankcase air to be ingested in the engine, hence the increased oil consumption. While its not ideal, I feel it's safe to drive if you don't put too much mileage on it.

On a fairly related note, I am planning on installing RS7 turbo inlets, baffled tubes, and RS7 airbox "while I'm in there". The problem? There is a nationwide shortage of left side RS7 turbo inlet pipes. Odd.........

Is your boost low? I get like 2 lbs of boost only...which makes sense bc if air leak. They don’t have opening for over a week at the dealer. Car is so embarrassing!

It builds boost much more slowly, but it will boost. I don't let any dealerships touch my car, I do all maintenance/repairs myself. I will try and document the process for others out there that want to tackle it themselves. Looking at the factory service manual, it doesn't appear to be that hard to replace, just requires draining the coolant because you are removing the intercooler. While being nestled in the V of the engine, access to the part doesn't seem that bad. This is coming from a guy who has seen the dread of others replacing an EGR cooler on a 6.0L Powerstroke......

Yep, I am very meticulous about documenting things like this. Parts should arrive Thursday, but I am going hunting on Friday-Wednesday, so it will likely be next weekend before I can tackle the job.

All parts are at the house, minus the left RS7 turbo inlet pipe (still on national backorder). If anybody has a new or used one laying around, I'd gladly take it off your hands. I plan on starting this on Friday, maybe taking part of Saturday too.

I'm in the same boat for my 2013 S6. I guess SkyDude has a better source for parts than the dealer? I got quoted $658 just for parts.

Got it all done. Uploading pics and will have a separate How To thread for those that want to tackle this themselves. Overall, not horrific, but the lock carrier needs to be removed, something that didn't occur to me when looking through the procedure the first time.....

I had mine replaced by dealer. They said it would have been a 2k cost w/o warranty. I'm at 65k miles. I also had motor mounts replaced also and some bushings b/c of other noises.

Most likely, since the same Separator Part Number: 079103542E is listed for 2013-2017 S6 & 2014-2017 RS7.
