    Out of state inspection

    Hey all,

Just bought a CPO 2013 X5 from Rhode Island, and had a question that hopefully someone here can answer.

The truck passed RI Safety and Emission Inspection which is good thru 2019.

Do I need to have the NY State Vehicle Inspection done immediately, or do is the RI inspection good until it expires?

    Thanks in advance.

If the car is registered in New York, then you'll need a NYS inspection. Otherwise you'll have to follow the state's regulations that it is registered in.

If you register with NY plates, you'll need a NYS inspection. I had the same dilemma when I bought a car from NJ. The NJ inspection was still good, I got pulled over and the cop asked why I don't have a NYSI and I said I just bought the car from out of state (and the DMV gives you a 10-day temp. inspection). If I didn't have that 10-day temp, I would've gotten a ticket.

Depends on which plates are staying in the car. If it's RI plates you're good if not you need to pass NY inspection. You have 30 days I believe.

I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.
I have neither the time, nor the crayons to explain this to you properly.

Welcome to the Cuomo Kingdom. If I'm not mistaken, inspections in NJ are good for 5 years on a new car, and 3 on every other car. Cost about the same as as a NY inspection. And in NJ, every new car comes with an inspection as part of the deal. Just one more way NY manages to hammer us...
