Grease coming out of rear cv boot. Can't see a tear

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hi, had this issue for a while when I swap out my summer/winter wheels I notice from grease in my ear driver inside wheel. Because of this silly winter in nova, I put back on my summers today. Saw a lot of grease. I notice there is no clamp on the rear boots. I guess the grease is coming out because of that? Any one experience this? See pic

Also, any diy for replacing rear cv boot? Found one but wasn't sure that was the best way to do it. Thanks

If this has been going on for a while, you're better off replacing the axle.

Looks broken at that first rib, and the fact that there's no clamp probably means it's coming out of the back as well as that spot. If the boot is okay, i'd replace the clamp with one of those screw in type's. If it's ripped I'd replace the axle.

thanks, I took the pic today without really getting back there....was in a hurry to get somewhere and wanted to switch wheels....will take off wheel and do full inspection...If I do need a new boot, anyone know a good diy for removing it? ELSA only shows how to remove entire axle which they say to remove the rear spring. ugh.

    Thanks

My opinion trying to swap the boot.

If you have to, it's a lot easier to take the axle off and line up/knock in the cv joint with the axle off than with it on the car if you don't just replace it. Removing the axle shouldn't take more than 30 minutes. A spring compressor isn't difficult to use. It took me a couple of minutes if that, to remove the rear springs.

Why not just replace the boots if the axles are not crackling while turning?

Both my rear axles did that. There is no clamp on that part of the boot from the factory. Not sure what causes them to leak. I put zip ties on both of my boots to snug them up and they stopped throwing grease everywhere. Worked great for another 30k miles or so until the car was totaled. I still have those axles as a spare set and they look/feel fine.

i thought about putting a hose clamp on it but not sure how much grease is still in there.... I guess there's no way to pump in some more grease with out taking off the boot? I'm not hearing any noise or anything

I find my time more valuable than packing fudge in a hole! I'm sorry, I meant grease into a twelve year old part.

Dude zip ties are life savers. I love those darn things. I have done a whole bunch of voodoo on my cars with zip ties haha

Woah, your time must be really valuable.

An axle thats actually worth putting onto your car (aka raxle or OEM) is exponentially more expensive than a boot kit, if you want to talk about time and value. Id ask you to explain your logic, but since you already made an attempt at a fudge-related joke, I'm sure I won't like the answer

You can put the grease into a syringe and stick it up underneath the booth and squeeze it in. I've done that before then seal the boot.

Aftermarket axles are are 1/7 of the price and carry a lifetime warranty. Why anyone would pay $700 for an OEM axle is something I'll never understand.

I agree with you on the grease, but not on the fudge.

I see no clip on the axle part of the boot. AFAIK there should be a small clip to keep the boot tight.

Edit: Sorry. I've just read all the other answers now.

New oem axles are a ripoff but raxles are worth the price. All other aftermarket axles are garbage and either never work or don't work for long.

If you want an OEM axle I have one sitting in the garage I'll sell for cheap. Gotta get rid of stuff.
