Is it possible to install a shift knob of a newer model onto an older model?

I'd like to go on eBay an get a nice looking s-line tiptronic shift knob to replace my stock (and boring) A4 B6 knob.

Does this kind of part is interchangeable within all Audi models?

I think a few people have.

But, the unanswered question has recently been regarding 8P A3 and whether it's knob and gate can be fit, as has been suggested on German forums, because it looks even better.

Some knobs you can install 1:1, others need some modification.
I have a 2009 A5 knob in my B6. Only needed to trim some plastic off the bottom of the A5 knob.
