Horrendous smell when I use windscreen washer

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Noticed recently that there is an awful smell, something like bad eggs or dead rats coming into the car each time I use wind screenwasher fluid. Having recently bought the car, I put in Autoglym washer fluid on top of existing water that was in there. Now it's rancid. The resevoir itself smells OK, but I presume the stink is coming from the pipes (which I cant smell).

What is the easiest and best way to clean these out? I would like add in a formula of something and blast it through but what is the safest liquid to use without damaging the pipes or paintwork?

Have you opened the reservoir and put your nose in to have a sniff?

chances are, it could be the soap… I've seen that happen before… mixture of stale soapy water with new soap etc.

If it is, why don't you just stick the hose in the reservoir… fill it up till it overfills and replaces the contents with fresh water inside and give it a try?

yeah i stuck my snout in there already. funny thing is all i smell is the regular wind screen washer scent. this leads me to believe that the foul aroma might be isolated within the pipes to the water jet. i wonder would bleach mixed with water help kill off the smell / bacteria....

Do NOT use bleach in there. Even in diluted form it can corrode metal and some plastics pretty quickly. Just flush the old stuff out with new stuff and call it a day.

    x2 don't use bleach.

The sensor and other metal parts are sensitive. Even certain types of windshield washer fluid will coat the sensor and have it malfunctioning thereafter.

I learned that the hard way with orange rain-x stuff. Had to use a chainsaw file to clean the probes on my B5.

I used rain x-once and had to get the sensor replace. It's the cheap stuff for me now.
