B6/B7 Gauge Face White LED Mod

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just figured I'd post a mod I just completed...perhaps to inspire anyone else that's curious as to whether the Mod is worth the effort...Honestly it REALLY depends on you're skill set...I wouldnt send out my Guage Cluster and pay someone to do this for me...but if you can do it yourself, its worth it...I paid about $7 for the LEDs...& my time. Thats all.

If you find you're gauge face a bit dim or not as "Modern looking", this maybe an option for you.

The improvement is Noticeable and subtle at the same time...which I like cuz it doesn't have the "Ricer" look. Although if you wanted to get creative with colors that's you're choice. I chose Ultra White LEDs From Ebay.

I will say that being familiar with Soldering Techniques particularly on Printed circuit boards & Small components IS A MUST!!!. If you're don't have the tools (not expensive) or the know how...you WILL SCREW Something up. I've been soldering since High School & still had a lil frustration & issues. Also IF you have 2005 or later...you won't be able to just pop in another gauge Cluster if you screw something up...that would trigger Safety Mode Immobilizer so that's another issue. But it can be done with a lil patience...

I apologize My BIG Fancy Note 5 still sucks at Low Light, Night photos...But you get the idea. Trust me it looks Waaaaay Better in Person!

Camera doesn't capture it well but you can tell by the Ambient light on the DASH board Hood over the gauges even in Sunlight.

Did you use dimmable LEDs for this mod? It is much brighter and looks very crisp, which I really like. Well done sir!!

Yes they are Dimmable...but not sure if there's a Gauge dim feature on Audi b6? Unless you have to VAG code it?

The 2 buttons to the left of the "Mode" button can be used to dim/brighten your display. My old 1966 Mustang and the 1972 Country Squire wagon I drove had a nice little knob to do that. If VAG started to require you to code in a brightness level.... WOWZA. I'm sure some engineer would think it practical. I know a few engineers... and they are not good mechanics.

Give the buttons a shot and if you can, post up a few more pics at max and minimum brightness. Nighttime shots would be best, if you have the time. Thanks man!! Awesome job!

I'll give it a shot...I honestly didn't know that. I thought they were only for adjusting the time...I'll try it and try to get some better shots

Why, for the "Civic" look?. Maybe add some glow under the body and a big fartcan too? To each their own, but I think the white is perfect and maintains this as a luxury vehicle rather than some squid's tuner junkbox.

Yep, I used it to figure out how to take apart my cluster, but it was outdated anyways and missing info

Also, my civic had white lights for the instruments... honestly now it does look like a civic haha

    BMW is orange
Classic Audi's were red, while WRX/STI is red

Who said anything about underglow and fart cans? You're either projecting or completely misconstruing what I implied

Side note, I donn't get why nearly every manufacturer goes with White

I'm about to do this lol

What paint did you use for the needles?

I've done this before and used glass paint to good effect

Nail polish remove to take the old layer off?

Not who you responded to but I did this on my old fox body mustang to get orange needles. Nail polish remover to remove old paint and I used model paint from a hobby store, it turned out great but no pics since this was 2005ish. May not work with Audi's needles but I'm sure it's the same illumination method.

Is there a way to get all the needles back on to where they are suppose to be without any VAG diagnostic hardware?

On the mini it use to be easy as they always reset to Zero once they had be replugged into the car

I'm wondering whether these do the same or stop at a specific point on the dials momentarily to allow the needles to be placed accurately?

    Anyone know this one?
