    Another question after testing valves

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Yesterday I did a test to see if my valves were bent; covered the 5 valves with water, sealed off the ports and introduced pressurized air to look for bubbles. I noticed small amounts of bubbles but not a tremendous amount. My thoughts are a few valves aren't seating 100%, but they aren't bent necessarily. The question is whether I should reseat the valves, being low on money after the timing chain overhaul should I sink in another 2/3 weeks in time taking apart the heads and lapping the valves, or leave it as is? I mean they should hold compression, so should I go through this long process or not?

Although I'm not an expert in the field of valve seating and compression, I'd say if you're already there, do it right. These are high performance machines that require precision. The last thing you want to find out is that you have to tear off the heads again later to fix it.

Do it right or do it twice...

I'm no expert either, but if you have the heads off, it's a no brainer imo.

I have new head gaskets ready to be installed, and taking the heads over to a machine shop to get them professionally pressure tested. If work needs to be done, I'll let them do it all and clean up the ports while they're at it. When it's all said and done, going to have a nicely overhauled engine on my hands, can't wait!

    this.

If you have the heads on the work bench you can do it yourself. places like auto zone sell lapping compound.

Before you lap, the stem-to-valve guide clearance needs to be checked. If it's in excess of the service limit (0.0031"), you'll need to replace the guides then clearance them to new spec.
