P0171 and p0507, which route should i take?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So while cruising the CEL came on. Codes were p0171 and p0507. I did my research in multiple sites on Google and AZ

So from what I gathered 3 things can cause this:
    1) PCV
    2) vacuum leak
    3) Intake motor flap.

So now with this I am not sure which route should i take to trouble shoot. I checked for any tips and such on vacuum line as much as I could (I was dropping my brother off an hour and half or so away and didn’t have much tools). And all vacuum lines feel fine. So now we have PCV and Intake motor flap.

Idea I have to fix PCV is to just get a catch can. I am scared that new PCV will give the issues of slug and such on valves, is this recommended? Does the revised PCV fix all issues that old one had? I am not trying to do crazy numbers on track or anything. Just want a reliable car with some pep (Sig has my mods and I’m probably staying close to that forever)

    Intake motor flap: replace it.

Now that i know my options i read on here that this was a recall, now my question to the expert is that if it’s a recall wouldn’t Audi have to replace it for free? Or is there still depending on that 120k mile extended warranty.

    Thanks

Refresh my memory....what do those codes mean? They look familiar but haven't memorized them... Guess I could google them but don't have that much free time to burn at the moment.

I had a P0171 on friday due to blowing off my boost gauge line (caused a vacuum leak). So that might be a good place to look.

I also have a replacement intake motor flap off my spare engine in you need.

I had the same codes. I took the manifold off to do a carbon clean and to make sure the flaps weren't sticking....as I was pulling the manifold off, a vacuum line snapped. That was not visible to the naked eye until I pulled the manifold. I cleaned the PCV and replaced the brittle line with the braided style. Codes went away and never came back. Your scenario may be completely different, but I lucked out.

p0171: Motor running too Lean (something like that)
p0507: rpm too high at idle (something like that)

These are off the top of my head but pretty much its what it means. i cant get the exact name. Dont want to get caught on a forum while at work.

Yeah that sounds lucky, you kinda got everything done in one go. Idk if i should start at PCV or Motor flap. I think im going motor flap since i did get a soft code before i erased it to see if it came back. i dont remember the code.

Would a Catch Can be a bad idea? for an overall preventative upgrade? Or its not really that worth it?

So I just did a pcv check and yup, can't pull up the oil cap when car is on.

So now my question is whether or not I should just get a catch can or if I should just replace with new revision.

Yup, just deciding if catch can is better long term vs pvc valve. I'm happy because I get to put my boost Guage at the same time as this lol.

    I have the same code
Went to my mechanic and narrow it down to pcv and the idle air control valve. But since b7's idle air control valve is attached to the throttle body, I have to change the throttle body. I read somewhere that I have to reset the throttle body with a vag com, is this true?

From the research ive done, you probably do. But i am not sure if i am confusing that with intake motor flap. You might be able to do it by a pedal trick or what not. I am not sure. Hopefully someone can answer that. How much were you quoted/paid for the throttle body? Just so i know my future expensive if its not only PCV.

Just to close the loop for anyone searching, I changed the PCV this weekend and clear the codes. Did a short test run and drove to work today. Checked for codes and car is fine. PCV was the cause of both of these codes together in my case. Good luck. I will update if that changes.

Oil cap comes off without a struggle but replaced the PCV anyway. No joy.
