    No crank/no start...good starter,battery,alternator,ignition switch...

Alright so the old thread was flooded with lots of posts, i figured I would start a new one with all of the details without having to go through 5 pages of comments making things a bit easier.

It started out as a no crank/ no start problem about a month ago. Out of about 100 tries, around the 80th attempt it randomly cranked+started up then died after a few seconds and wouldn't crank or start again. So I replaced the battery, battery terminals, removed and cleaned the connections, replaced battery ground wire, checked other ground wires, replaced alternator, replaced ignition switch, checked fuses, listened for fuel pump(I can hear it).

Then after replacing the starter yesterday the car would turn over and after a little hesitation it would crank up but then immediately stall out. If I tried to turn it on immediately again it would just turn over and over etc without cranking up. If I waited a few minutes then it would again start after a little hesitation then immediately die. This morning I attempted to start it but it just turned over and over and over without every cranking up. Then I tried it again and it wouldn't do anything, back to the no crank/no start symptoms since this morning. I jumped the starter posts to each other and I can hear it turning strong and fast like it's supposed to, but when I turn the key it does absolutely nothing. Dash lights come on, but when I turn the key I hear nothing but the fuel pump.

Just found and tested the fuel pump relay(s?) the 2 relays underneath the ECU with the number 614 on them, they both click and show continuity on the multimeter so I'm moving on.

Hmm crank position sensor? That is last i can think of. So when you replaced your starter you made sure is on tight and terminals are secured? Battery terminals are secured? How much gas you have left and how many miles?

I would still change both relays. Inexpensive and just because its reading good doesnt mean its not faulty (both mine looked fine and tested fine)

Everything is tight, and I double checked just in case after it wouldn't start anymore. Half a tank left, 150k on the car.

I don't have a scanner unfortunately, and don't want to buy one because I'm just selling the car after I fix it. I'm almost to the point of just getting it towed to a mechanic at this point.

Hmmm does the car sound like it has no compression? You didn't snap a timing belt right?

Does anyone have or know where I could rent a vagcom? I'm not shelling out $350 for a one time use but I could definitely use a vagcom right now. I live on the Mississippi gulf coast so I doubt anyone lives around here

I know you said your moving on from fuel but did you pull spark plugs and smell for gas after cranking? Just cause the pump runs doesn't mean it's makeing it into the cylinder

Also I agree you need to scan

I have not done this. It's storming today so I will pull the plugs after turning the key and smell for gas. If I can't get ahold of a vagcom won't an OBD II scanner be good enough to pull codes?

The starter is spiking to 20 volts when the key is turned to start position?

Could anyone give me some insight on this finding? What could be the reason for such high voltage at the starter? Is it possible that this starter is also bad? Seems unlikely to me. It's odd that at first the new starter allowed the car to actually turn over and sometimes crank(then immediately die) but now it has returned to the state of no crank/no start.

OBD2 is showing a code for "u0101" or "lost communication with transmission control module"

SOLVED! It was a fuse. Upon physical inspection it looked fine but I replaced it anyways and VUALA! Magic. Driver side kick panel fuse #31 15A "Reversing lights, gear lever gate, el. Mirror"

Glad you solved it. I thought it sounded like an imobolizer, but did not know the details.
    Good job.

I have had that happen before as well, especially with older fuses
