    Oil pressure light

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
When I drive my 2005.5 Audi A4 2.0t at low Rpms (about 1000 to about 1400) the oil pressure light starts flashing. As soon as I get above around 2000 rpms the light goes away. I'm not sure why this is happening. Has anyone else had this problem?

And if that doesn't fix it?

I measured my pressure with an external gauge and it's low at idle. With or without the pcv connected. And with a new pcv.

Try flushing the engine. Could be a slightly clogged suction tube. Possible. I use about half of a can of seafoam at idle for 15-20 then drain thoroughly. Just my thoughts.

What kind of oil filter are you using? If it’s a K&N, WIX, Mobil 1 or Napa Gold, don’t be surprised if it’s crushed or clogged up. Only run OEM or Mann filters.

Buy a new oil filter and get an oil pressure gauge on it. Your oil pressure should be at least 14 PSI at idle and between 40-60 PSI at 2k. Readings should be at full operating temp.

If your readings are lower than what I said, you probably need an oil pump.

Don’t flush your engine with bullshit flush kits and don’t replace anything before you do tests. The only thing you need to do is change your oil filter to OEM and get a real gauge on it.

If your pressure readings are lower than spec next you drop your oil pan and see if the pick up tube is clogged. If it is, replace it. While you’re in there, check to see if the balance shafts have play or if there are metal flakes in the pan. If there are no flakes and you have no play, button it back up and check pressure again. If it’s good, your pick up tube was the problem. If there are flakes and the balance shafts have play, you need a new pump.

If you replace the tube, button it back up and you still have low oil pressure, you still probably need a new oil pump because the pressure limiting valve on it probably failed.

Now, if you check your oil pressure with a gauge and your pressure readings are in spec, replace your oil pressure switch or check the wiring for it.

The below is a great example of what a Napa Gold Chinese filter looks like. Found this when baselining my son's B7. Mann has always been my German car filter, and will continue to be so.
