5 speed tranny ticking after fluid change

Recently got my fluid changed in my tranny and it's making this ticking sound. It's only doing it in 2 through 5 gears. Is it possible the person who changed it just used crappy gear oil?

I would be sure he placed a GL4 compliant fluid in there. Many fluids today are both GL4 and GL5 rated, but you never know.

Yeah first check what type of fluid was used. However, I doubt that you would hear ticking immediately after the swap.

Sounds like maybe your mechanic didn't fill it properly. It needs to be done with the car cold so the right amount of fluid is replaced. Is this an Audi/VW mechanic or some random shop? I wouldn't trust the job to just anybody.

It was my buddy who works on audis. I know he filled it when it was cold. Would using a heavier weight oil make it do this?

Find out exactly what fluid he used. Also the old fluid starts to build it's own stability on the gears and synchros after a while. Meaning, it sort of becomes like a part of the structure keeping everything tight and together. When you change the fluid there is the chance you washed that out, causing this.

I would drain the fluid again and see if any metal shavings come out. Sucks having to take this route, but you would def want to inspect your fluid for shavings. And if all ok, use the more common fluids. And ask the person who swapped the fluid what exact fluid he used. The more info we have, the more we can help.

I think he may have not only used a non synthetic but also the wrong weight.
